Having the former tell me my character was unlike the women she had met in her father's court might seem an insignificant detail, but the acknowledgement makes a massive difference in terms of engaging the player.

Silk Fox made me tingle. ^_^

Silk Fox glitched on me.... :crying:
And I will never get over it...

Also I tried making a Sheploo to romance Miranda but I just could not. Not matter how attractive I tried to make my Shep.  I just couldnt romance her with a guy I couldn't find attractive and his voice ruined that for me.

You know, the last bit makes me wonder. I've heard from gay guys who played as FemShep so they could romance Kaidan. Do you girls play as men sometimes just so that you can bang the ladies? Because I tend to care about the aesthetics of my hero a lot, and if there's no gay romance, I just ogle him. I guess it's about seeing the hero as a placeholder for you (so the rest matters more) or as a protagonist in a movie (so he or she matters more). Which one would it be for you?

I played a male just long enough to get the Morrigan romance acheivement, yes.....:? (though my FemWarden so wanted to romance her....so badly - "I killed your mother, do you love me now?!")

I moreso "insert myself" into the game (which is kind of dangerous, since it is easy for me to get addicted to the video game, hence why I never ponied up cash for any MMO, even if I wanted to). My character makes the decisions I would make normally, and it draws up the same philosophical concerns I tend to contemplate myself (which means me staring at a computer screen for 20 min or longer, weighing the pros and cons).

It also means I am very emotionally attached to certain characters, cry during certain scenes, etc.

It is kind of pathetic, but at the end of the day, I will play a male, keep the anvil preserved, or be an ass to mages, or whatever, to get the achievement, and feel gross afterwards  because I want the stupid achievement. I play exclusively female as much as possible, only because I either have to play a dude, or some objectified female with so many other games.

For me it's a bit of both. I would say she's a protagonist made from a limited part of my own self (a narrowed place-holder.) How much of myself goes into the PC, and which part, depends on how I react in the first place to what I percieved from her.
Afterwards, the character may become a bit more independent (a bit like if you look at your former self  after some time has passed, or if you were in a different mood.)
That's why the origin system held so much re-playability for me : Different starting situations triggered different reactions from me, coalescing into fully different protagonists I could choose to identify with, or see from a little distance, sometimes.

When it comes to play men, I can't 'feed' enough the character with my own self, so the result feels awkward.
I tend to fall back on a way to play like 'guiding' a friend through his story, but I don't engage him in romances.

Errr... To be completely honest, I made a HN warden male to give a try to Morrigan's romance (out of sheer curiosity of course! Because I never saw her as a romanceable option, even if I liked her very much...)
But I could never resolve myself to engage in it. The transformation Morrigan went into, from the "I'm the toughest, meanest, sarcastic gal 'round here..." to "I can become a purring kitty soooo fast, when confronted to a real man..." was kind of unsettling (and also made a rich addition to her personality...)

I think the big problem for me is the feeling that the female LI's reactions are targeted to a completely different kind of person (which is a bit vexing) if I continued to see the male PC as a (limited) placeholder, or that I'm indiscreetly peeping at something I shouldn't, if I see the PC as a fully independent protagonist.

On the other hand, I'm not used to take enough distance with my characters to begin to ogle at them, even if I maxed out the CC to make them guys look good.
In these cases, I go into non-romance, friendly. but grim. PTs. (And that's why I only very casually play male PCs)

Leliana's romance, on the opposite, was nice (accepted or refused) because my PC reacted accordingly to how I feel I could have reacted myself.

Didn't realize she gets gooey like that, since I quit and delete my dude right after I got the achievement, but that woluld be highly unsettling to me as well.

I always find playing females and doing romances weirder because I'm almost worried about hwat the game expects out of me from the PC I picked (specifically, should I expect an insanely demeaning steroetype at some point? That's why I can't play certain female protags in some games, like the new Lara Croft) <_<

Especially if I play a lesbian. I never found the lesbian romances satisyfing, in either game. At least, the options I was given (AVELINE!!!!! :crying:)

If anything, I would have romanced Mhairi or Sigrun. Or Awakening Anders.

I found the hetero romances way more fleshed out that the homosexual ones. I wanted to play manHawke to see if that was the case for the gay guys (poor gay guys only had Zevran, or maybe Dairren for a fling, and I could not figure out how to seduce him as a dude) but I cannot pour my soul into a character that is a dude when I have a strong, formidable woman I can make. <3 Plus, he voiced City Elf rapist, and I cannot get that awful laugh out of my head (poor guy was TOO good)

Lol, I suspect you have actually seen much more of Morrigan's romance than I have, since I didn't even started it (it is an achievement I have not.) I was just pointing her flirty style (I strongly exaggerated, of course : It was just to give the general direction.):P

I've played very few video-games, actually, (NWN1, NWN2 and DA:O, and I did romances only in the latter.)

In DA:O, I wasn't under the impression that the game expected some specific behavior from my character (and it's very good like that, IMO), but rather that specific LIs were expecting something from her.
Sometimes it was OK with the character I was currently playing, and sometimes not so much. In the last case, my character refused or dodged (with Leliana)... Which is OK for me also (as to be refused, actually.)

I think romances are like the rest of RPG, they work better if I find a personal way to figure them.

(I'm going off-topic but the most difficult for me, Morrigan excepted, was Alistair. I really had to wait until I stumbled onto a fem-DC warden, sufficiently 'baby-faced', joyfull and easy-going, so I could romance him without feeling guilty for having my virtual PC involved in virtual sex... with a virtual kid...):crying:

I liked Leliana's f/f romance the time I played a very tough 'cold-hearted killer' dalish bow-warrior : I saw them like a pair of complementary 'archers-lovers' (sweet rogue/ hard fighter). <3

I agree with many posters here who would prefer  less accessable LI (The "slap-then-kiss-then-slap-again-then..." stuff.) It's true for all romances in general (hetero LIs included), as long as it looks both elegant and natural.
Of course, it's left to be determined who gives the slaps to whom...

I tried playing as a male character to get to romance I wanted but it always ended up awkward and unsatisfying. That is why I really didn't mind the playersexual romances of DA2. I really didn't care that Merrill never said anything about liking anyone and seemed to be attracted to my PC. I got to get my desired romance with my desired character. A win in my book. I never played a male Hawke and I am glad I never had to.

We need some information about the companions. I don't know how much longer I can go without having some females to squee over.
Back on the topic of female warriors:
If I got to choose, I'd like a female warrior that's a bit like Mulan from Once Upon A Time.
She's strong, brave and protective...and she's one tough ****. She's efficient and WILL cut you if you cramp her style. Really, she'd fit quite nicely in the whole 'doesn't like you until you convince her otherwise' niche.
And we need more women of different ethnicities in DA. Do asians not exist in Thedas? D:

Well... yes.

It was just an observation pertaining to the practice already commented on in the thread. It wasn't intended to call into question the legitimacy of the original creation.

did princess Jasmine pop up yet? I love them both anyway....
to answer your question about asians insofar i'm gonna have to go with no only because it's supposed to be only based on europe but i'd wouldn't expect them to never show up maybe we'll get some explorers or something as far as i know there isn't any countries in the know Thedas that has and asians thames but who knows may DA4 will have us traveling east or something.:D(PS: I'm all for the inclusion of lots of different ethnicities and sorry for my babbling):wizard:

Nah, I just go celibate or headcanon the romance into the story.

I also see my PCs as a character in a movie and I just prefer to watch a story with a female lead.

Well, all these Isabelas need at least one foil character, so they can't all be her!
