I'm playing a character through BG1 and am near the end but still quite a few hours of playing time left. I've already reached the XP cap so I can't improve my character any more before I import him into BG2
I'm just wondering what others think about when is the time to import your BG1 character into BG2 Do you play the entire BG1 game (including TotSC), or do you import as soon as you reach the XP cap?
I can understand the enjoyment of playing the entire BG1 game with a character, but I've already played BG1 to the end quite a few times, and I'm not improving my character during the rest of BG1, and the whole point of playing a character in BG1 is to get him to BG2
Going from BG1 to BG2

Option 1 = Solo play... go ahead and do the extra TotSc content, at least once or twice.
Option 2 = Group play... better off going dirrect to BG2 so that you don't become overpowered.
p.s. The BG1 cap DOESN'T apply to BG2, so you could end up starting BG2 as a level 11 Fighter for example.

Option1 - playing solo I reach the XP cap well before chapter 7, which is when I usually do the TotSC content. So if I'm not improving my character any more, why should I play the TotSC content, or for that matter Chapter 7? If I import my character into BG2 now, there's no difference if I instead continue playing the rest of BG1 (and TotSC) and then import him into BG2 -
Option 2 - How would I get overpowered? I have played BG1 many times in a group and each time I have reached the XP cap before the end of the game. So from that point on, playing the rest of BG1 does not improve my character at all (no more XP gained, no more levels gained, etc) so I don't think I understand what you mean by "overpowered".

Bg2 is designed to be played by a character starting at 8-10 depending on class... lets’ say a Mage... she has access to nice level 5 spell of ‘CloudKill’ but probably can’t cast superior spells like ‘Death Fog’/ ‘Pierce Magic’ or the ever useful ‘Contingency’ however your Solo-playing Sorcerer has completed BG1 (TotSc) and starts Bg2 as a level 12 with 755,000 xp* therefore gaining a strong advantage over the game engine right from the get go.
I don’t really agree with you that there is no point to doing game content which does not directly improve your characters stats but I do totally support your right to play that way... it’s your game!
* Level10 9 (161,000 XP) is the cap BUT the extra experience (& in this case spells) will be carried over to BG2 when you import your character.

@ussnorway Are you assuming he is playing with TuTu?

No but I’ll concede that my math could be a little off... the point is that experience does carry over.
edit: Sorcerer?... opps!

I've never played BG2 without a player that first went through BG1, so it's natural for me that whatever XP a character gains in BG1 is what they start BG2 with. I know you can play BG2 and create a brand new character, but to me it's like "what's the point?".
And yes, I am playing with Tutu.
