Soo...if that's true then this makes the decision to announce right now about one thing and one thing only:  Project Eternity.

Possibly but P:E isn't stated for release until 2014. Now if Inquisition's release date is pushed back from 'late 2013' into 2014 then I would have no choice but to thoughfully rub my chin and go 'hmmmmmm...' (thoughtful pose & smoking of pipe optional, of course!)

Even still, what marks today as a significant day to announce a game that we won't be seeing more of until 2013?

I think that it might just be a brilliant marketing move. Isometric RPG Project Eternity gets funded in under a day. With people now interested in it, they will begin to look at other titles like that, and this is where Dragon Age 3 comes in. Whether or not it will be like the game, or like Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights, is debatable

I wasn't thinking so much about release date timing as ...why announce your next big cRPG right after the weekend in which Obsidian just raised 1.5 million for an independent kickstarter, deep immersive traditional isometric party-based cRPG.  They were either scared into it (unlikely) or just wanted to steal the thunder (that I can see).  Why else announce a game you aren't ready to talk about?

This as well.  Though I can't help thinking that BioWare took it on the chin a little bit...the whole concept of Project: Eternity
and how people have been trying to get BIoWare to return to its roots
for years...they may be feeling a little jealous/hurt.

Wow. Thanks for answering a simple question with an actual answer :)

This convinces me that Bioware are actually serious about communicating more transparently this go around. Kudos to the op and CP both :)

This message is intended to be interpreted without snark or sarcasm btw.

I don't know if they feel jealous or hurt. I DO think they'd like to make games for hardcore players and casual players however. There's just one hugE roAd block preventing them from connecting with their roots.

Then why bother announcing it? You guys have been saying "We're listening and taking suggestions" for over a year, did we really need a special blog to hear it again?

It will be like Dragon Age 2, except more locations and slightly customizable companions. Mark my words.

Gonna have to go with the choir on this one. Not that I'm expecting every detail right away, but if you're going to officially announce a new game, I would think we should know something more than just "new game engine" for the next four months. What's there to talk about here that couldn't have been relegated to the DA2 general discussion until something concrete emerges?

I know if I think like that I'll most likely be pleasantly surprised by the actualy game, but I don't think it's going to be possible for them to make a game like Dragon Age 2 again. It already had 200% more development time.

Like I said, more locations and slight party customization. It is already better than Dragon Age 2 by virtue of the longer dev time, in the same sense that  a one pound cake is better than a 300 gram cake. It still tastes the same though.

I really don't give a damn what engine they are using and I see them announcing Forstbite 2 as a cynical attempt to appeal to it's fans. If this is the goal than we can already guess what kind of game they are making.

Yeah, and we'd liek to give it to you, but the team isn't rushing the game, so it has to be ready before it gets shown.

And I thought I'm the only one making this strange assumption. Funny thing is, I noticed Project Eternity not until after work today ( working sundays prevents me from lurkin around the internet for game news) and wanted to visit these boards to look for the mandatory "Project Eternity is the game BioWare should be developing"-rant and discovered Inquisition announcement. Thats where this assumption was born, strange day as an rpg fan.

Good, because I hope you guys get the development time longer than 2 years this time. The longer the time, the better the game, naturaly.

Oh indeed. That must be it. It couldn't be because of the reasons Mark mentioned in the blog now could it? The leaks, the team wanting to be able to talk more openly about the project, etc?

Naw, it must be because, by announcing DA3 today we are somehow doing something negative to the awesome looking Project Eternity (which fully funded, so I'm not sure how we're hurting it. Plus Chris Avallone would kick my butt next time I see him).

Good theory there, champ.

Yeah I mean its not like EA is using the engine on every title it can.......... oh wait.

Its not like fans were crying out for a new engine......... oh wait

So I take it we're going to have to put up with up with silly whinging like this for over a year.

I have a question. You're not going to show the game soon, but you'll not show info about the story and characters either? Showing concept arts for the characters and bits of info about the story, characters could be nice.

Chris, I know you guys are sticking to the "show and tell" policy, but would it be out of order to ask what stage development's at? I know Mark said it's been on the go for 18 months (IIRC), but where does that take you? Are parts of the game playable?

My theory is actually that the story is pretty much written, all the models are made (such as armor, weapons, environments, and characters), and all the technical stuff is all ready to go. I think this time now is to hear what people want so they can throw it all together and present when they are ready.

I'm sorry if you think I'm being too much of a conspiracy theorist with that, maybe I am.  Or maybe, just maybe Project Eternity did indeed have something to do with the timing of the announcement?  Who knows, I guess we'll find out when you're ready to talk about the game...in 4+ months.
