A villain who drives the plot and stands in the way of the player and gives the quest meaning? That's what DAIII needs. Period.

They need to have someone like that who drives the plot along.

Loghain was a story element, the plot was darkspawn.

Yeah, but he was at least a villain with a face. The Darkspawn were an ambiguous horde.

Led by an Archdemon.

We had a good supporting villain in DA2: the Arishok.

I still remember being shocked by how Loghain turned out after reading Gaider's first novel...anyway, was just thinking about Irenicus today and about how protagonists need antagonists whether personified or not. Hawke had no antagonist, no driving goal. What was the plot of BG2? Find Irenicus, rescue Imoen. What was the plot of DA2? Uhh...well...run around Kirkwall and hope everything going to hell around you sorts itself out in the end?

There are speculations that either Flemeth or Morrigan is the 'villain'.

Yep, that's the problem with the Darkspawn threat. They are a faceless enemy, you never interact with them or the main villain, the Archdemon. Matrix sufferes from that too, therefore Agent Smith. And Mass Effect as well, therefore the Illusive Man and KaiLeng (*sigh*). Or Lord of the rings...well, even Sarum wasn't that present, I admit...but still better than a mere flaming eye...

Loghain and smaller villains like Arl Howe are more connected to us, because we can relate to them. they are humans. We can hate them better, and it feels more like triumph overcoming them then just a horde

A villain, as I see it, should be more than just some Dr. Evil, rubbing his hands and leaving you every five seconds in a death-trap...give him/her an agenda we can understand, but still despise (or not?). Make him really antagonize us throughout the main quest. Loghain was far too "passive" for my taste...I had more hatred for Rendon howe, that was "personal"

Hopefully they will not switch from one villain to another like in DA 2.

The Arishok and Loghain were some excellent villains.
So yes, I hope we get villians in DA 3 like them.
But with writers like those from BioWare, well I'm sure they'll succeed.

Yes, it's not like DAO went on for several hours after the defeat of Loghain.

Define "defeat of Loghain", because in my playthough...well, nevermind.  Such a better game.

It's easier to say "defeat" than "execution or possible recruitment."

Not that I have ever recruited Loghain or would ever. I much prefer the bouncing sound his head makes.

Yeah, but the confrontation with Loghain was essentially the start of the climax.   Not the case in DA2.

Ditto.

I'd also love a more Jon Irenicus type villian

Loghain was great, but if DA3 adds a similiar character then I hope its either the Grand Duke Gespard de Chalons or Empress Celene I! :D

I hope that DA3 will feature more then just one antagonist with the depth of Loghain.

Bioware needs to ease up on the brainwashed/controlled antagonist archetype, and write more villains who's motives are guided by past experiences, philosophy, conflicting ideology, or a just because.

*edit* add sociopaths to the overused list too.

I was actually not impressed with Loghain as a villain. As a CHARACTER, I thought he was brilliant. He had a lot of depth and weight to him. He was challenging, interesting, and surprisingly sympathetic.

But IMO villains need to be more than that. They need to be scary. They need to feel like they could actually go toe to toe with my PC, like they have a real chance of winning. My first BioWare villain was Jon Irenicus, a guy who literally made my blood run cold.

I don't know if Flemeth being the villain would be amazing, or a disappointing waste of her character.  All I know is she looked ridiculous in DA2.  More like a Final Fantasy villain than anything I could ever take seriously.

Doubtful. The Arishok was a good character reminiscent of Loghain -- more Well-Intentioned Extremist and either Anti-Villain/Anti-Hero IMO for the both of them, though I may be using the latter terms wrong -- but then Bioware made Act 3 fall apart by poorly designing it.

A fact they have, thankfully, admitted.

The Arishok wasn't perfectly executed IMO, but he was done well enough. There were only a few minor things I would've changed about him, like having him meet with Meredith a few times and discussing certain things.

But otherwise? Good character.

I doubt we'll get another Arishok/Loghain ever again.

Yeah, I much prefer the "unassuming old woman" portrayal. It makes her actual identity that much more creepy.

I liked the Arishok more than most of my companions in DA2.
