I know this would require a lot of voice acting, but I think it's worth considering. It's certainly a degree of character customization that hasn't really been attempted in an SPRPG with a fully voiced PC.

The voice actors that Bioware contracts are generally top notch, but if customization is the name of the game, there's something to be said for allowing players to pick their character's voice.

I really don't agree with this because it literally gives a lot of power to the players and people will be mad as a result if they don't get theirs, also the voice we try to choose might not work for the story. But hey, opinions.

I didn't mean have players vote on a voice actor before the lines were recorded.

I meant have multiple voice actors record all the lines, and allow players to choose a voice at character creation.

Tell me...

Would you rather a number of voices to be added as choices?

Or for that money to be allotted to many other customization option? Maybe even origins (voice acting costs a lot)?

I think a voice slider(where we can adjust one base voice) would accomplish close to the same thing much cheaper. I do get tired of hearing one voice per PC gender though.

While I really like the idea, I feel it would take too much voice acting and take resources that can be used else where.

If some of you aren't aware, a single good voice actor can easily do this. All they have to do when they record their lines is have them read one version, then change their voice and read it again.

A good voice actor can easily voice more then one character and you wouldn't even realize it.

if Bioware hires some good ones (and they have in the past) I'm sure they could easily have one of the main ones who voices the main character read his lines twice in two different male voices (and same for the female voice actor).

i'd like at least two voices to choose from. I mean a big bulky human warrior doesn't (in my mind) sound the same as a skinny mage using elf would.

I'm not sure it makes it much cheaper

I definately would like there to be more than one voice actor per gender, especially if there are going to be different races to pick from. A slider for voice pitch sounds interesting but my only issue with that is that it isn't likely to change the tone of an actors delivery. My issue with femalehawke was that the voice actor's various tones (all three) didn't mesh with the idea of the female Hawkes I was creating.

As long as Steve Blum can be male protagonist....I can die a happy man, why waste his talents on companions when he should be the guy shining....a man can dream

Yeah, this is a very good proposition, they should do that like in Soul Calibur 4 & 5 those games have that same option and it gives a lot of variety, without investing too much money on it.

When I saw the title of this thread this is exactly what I was thinking. I would think it would be alot easier and less exspensive to do this. Giving us a little more control over our Protagonists custumization. It would be to costly to have a bunch of VA for 1 Protagonist double that with male and female.

I'm going to say that if there was a possible way to do this - possible meaning both financially and logistically - that BioWare would have done it by now.

No... I'm not sure you realise just how much voice acting it'd require.

How much are you really willing to pay for DAIII? Cuz for what you want it wouldn't be 59.99 US.

They wont, VAs are expensive and so is their time. That's why even with the two lead VAs we had in DA2 conversational options were drastically cut down. Too many branching paths means too many lines to be recorded.

At best we'll see a return of the personality system between nice guy, ****, and funny ****

It wouldn't be any cheaper.

Or they could do what Capcom did with Dragon's Dogma and have one voice and tune it a couple of different times, high and low, and use those as voice choices.

You could even go further and tune it 5 more times and sell it as extra-voice DLC for 3 bucks.

...

I love Dragon's Dogma, but seriously, what the hell?

In regards to a voice slider, I have to wonder how a voice actor/actress would feel about the pitch of their voice being manipulated, particularly if he or she is voicing the lead role in a video game. I've seen pitch/voice sliders in games where your character's voice is very minimal, such as in Soul Calibur, where you can manipulate their voice that they use in battle and during winning screens, but I've never seen one in games where the protagonist has as much lines like in ME or DA 2.

In addition, I'm also wondering how the developers feel about giving the players the ability to manipulate the main character's voice to such a degree, as I can't help but feel as if it could create an experience that the developer's weren't intending (e.g., an extremely high-pitched male voice).

While we're at it, why not add a "silent" option that just mutes the PC and forces subtitles?

That way I can stop hearing the constant complaining about it.

I think that would be really unrealistic in terms of resources to have multiple VAs for each gender, and I think what we'd end up with would be much more of the dreaded auto-dialogue ... with the majority of people picking the same actor anyway.

Also, about changing the pitches - I'm not sure what good that would do? What difference would it make if the line is delivered a major third down the scale?

Absolutely! With a pitch slider, they could add racial choice back in.

Yes, but it probably will not happen. The voice actor for the protagonist have more lines then anyone else. Double that if we have one more voice for female and male. A voice slider for lower and higher pitch would work better, as long as it does not get to extreme. The Sims 3 is a good example that it could be done right without sounding (to) weird.

I don't think a pitch slider would do much to change tone. For a few lines here and there like in some fighting games? Sure, neato. But for a fully voiced character with thousands of lines of dialogue? Probably wouldn't work very well/to great effect.

i would rather have a good voice actor i don't think we need to have a choice about this
it takes up space and time that could be given to game play and things that matter much more

shepard and hawke work because of how well they were voiced sorry there is no need for more then one voice for male and female
