I just left lothering and was curious as to were to go first.....does the difficulty of each area depend on your char level or does it matter at all?

I went to Redcliffe (if you accept Alistair's advice), but you can also head for Bracelian forest.
Yes, there is level scaling, but some areas are inherently more difficult than others (Deep Roads, methinks).

Getting Shale is quite easy so you could do that first.
Followed by Mages, Redcliffe and then either Orzammar (Dwarves) or Brecilian Forest.

pump STR to at least 42 so you can equip all armor in the game.
then depending on the spec, other stats.
(2H pump WILL, DW pump DEX, Shield pump DEX)

We've put together a Newbie Guide and a Human Noble Warrior Walkthrough. Feel free to browse around the site aswell, you might find some things useful. And welcome to Dragon Age: Origins

Does anyone know why my screenshots aren't in my photo album? Just having issues with this as the moment.

I did redcliffe and then went to do the circle of magi quest and then finished redcliffe as a start. I think doing the circle of magi quest near the beginning is a good idea because you get a valuable member there who sure comes in handy in the forest and in the deep roads. :]
