Sebastian Vael.

I find his conflicted nature compelling and it offers a great deal of potential for growth and expansion. His story has been left open-ended and, despite the great deal of protest that will undoubtedly follow this post, Sebastian is a character with the greatest opportunity for continuation.

I'd like to see him return in some capacity, even if it isn't as a permanent companion, if only for the sake of closure.

But what will get is: new protagonist, Anders, Aveline, and a bunch of new people.

I hated Anders in Awakening and in DA2. Aveline was a great character, but if there's a new protagonist, I don't want any old characters returning. Start fresh.

And the storyline will probably go back to the dumb Templar vs. Mage debacle. Seriously, what happened to the old gods and darkspawn, did they just disappear? DA2 seemed to be just one big side quest derived from Origins.

Plus if this game has any ties to DA2, I'm actually going to have to finish a whole game of DA2.

Yes, because more half-content tack on companions with little to no interaction and heavily open-ended story lines is exactly what we need.

In all seriousness - at the very least, I would like to learn of Sebastian's fate. The lack of closure to a story-line, that is relatively large in the grand scheme of things, is something that I find extremely annoying.

To me there are only three characters that could make sense storywise being in DA3: Alistar, Morrigan (w/ OGB), and Leliana. I don't really want anyone from DA2 involved, unless it's Hawke.

I think a lot of us are not asking how will Bioware handle the conversation options of these returning companions. Will we be going through their background stories again as if we never met these people before? For this reason is why I believe that none of the former companions from Origins or DA2 will be back because we have to play a new protagonist that starts fresh again.

We might just have to settle for cameos again like DA2 and read about their adventures in novels and Dark Horse comics.

None. Especially not Morrigan. She was awesome in DAO, kind of a disappointment in that last DAO DLC, and I'm sure her character will just be FUBAR in DA3.

A problem that is very rarely considered, yet not entirely impossible to get around.

Certain characters aren't entirely defined by the stories of previous games, so much as the plots that surround them. Unfortunately the only one that I've ever truly explored in-depth is Sebastian and I feel that if I use him as an example, I'm merely beating my own dead horse with a stick.

I'd like to see cameo's where appropriate. If we are at (or near) Kirkwall then we could see some of the DA2 cast, although I don't particularly want to see them in the middle of nowhere where it doesn't make sense. Maybe if we see Hawke in a cameo he can be with his LI from the previous game, that would be a nice touch.

Otherwise I'm not really fussed. I don't want any old characters to have a major role in the story (except minor characters from previous games given an upgraded role, Cassandra and Flemeth). Also I don't want any characters who died in the previous games randomly appearing, that's just annoying.

What I WOULD like in terms of party members though:

Tallis
Cullen
Qunari Warrior (Male or Female)
Elf Male Mage

Doable too since all the previous party members have to be alive in everyone's playthrough.

That was a game where you had an imported main character.  It doesn't work out well when you have a new protagonist.  It kind of falls flat in the "I gotcha bro" department.

I can think of many characters that I would not welcome seeing as little more than a cameo (because that will annoy me).
