I hope BSN is willing to be forigiving - these didn't come out like I hoped, especially the woman - but I'm thinking something like this:

The woman is, it'd imagine, a city elf: likely the servant of a minor noble since she is tidy with some makeup (fortunately not at infamous Orana levels) but nothing fancy.
The dude is Dalish. In DAII the 'mohawk' thing is pretty common, and then I added braids because hey, braids are cool. (And they're more practical in the forest than loose hair anyway.)

More specifically, the noses and ears, I think, need to have minor tweaks. The Dalish call City Elves flat ears because they have absorbed human culture and their ears don't stick out as much. The noses too could help show this, with Dalish having the Na'vi-like noses and the City Elves with more normal noses. Also important if we get race selection, which for me is a must have, so everyone can have a decision with their character's opinion.

It looks like the DAII form of elves. However I look at those and think, yeah! They look pretty good. (In fact not to different from what I picture, barring the lack of 'dip' in the nose bridge.
So.... what happened when it came to execution, then?

I'm probably going to regret sharing this because The Internet, but honestly when they descirbe them as 'exotically beautiful', I picture something like a Pocahontas/Egyptian blend. High severe checkbones, large almond eyes, strong but slender jaw, sloping forehead.

Good designs! They have different facial appearances than Tolkien elves and yet have realistic proportions.
Just further proof you can have unique and ordinary looking at the same time. Bioware seems to think the elves must be ugly and mutated otherwise they are "small humans with pointy ears." Well DA2 elves were still small humans just with ugly disproportionated faces and floppy ears.
So yes, they should change the the design of the elves again. Either back to the style of Origins elves or at least make the proportions of elves correct this time. No huge foreheads, big eyes, skinny necks and weird facial structures.
(And regarding the sketch again: Those designs seriously look better than DA2 elf designs. I know that might not be saying much considering how ugly DA2 elves are but there you have it.)

firstly, does anyone else think the third girl from the left on top looks like natalie portman? and, I would really like to see an elf that looks like the first guy on the bottom.
Also, I would like to say that what I have said all along was that the execution was lacking, not the idea. They really only had one faceshape in DA2 - pointy. I would say that not much time was spent on elves other than main ones because BW didn't think anyone would really notice.

Seriously people that think short humans with pointy ears are better elves than the more distinct elves in DA2 are fools. While some of the elves looked ugly they could do a good job and I think they'll do a good job in 3. Orsino and Merril were fantastic looking and they were distinctly elven.
I disagree. Elves shoudn't look exactly like humans -they should be differences. Elves should be wilder with softer than humans face shape. In DA2 they look like Gollum with pointy ears. ;/ I hope when they change engine elves will look better.
Dude, I pretty much quoted that I didn't want them to look exactly like humans.
They needed a few tweaks, like the ears sticking out the side too much, elongated necks and some straight noses, but on the whole they are good.

In my humble opinion, they should try their hardest to capture the badassery of these 2 elves; probably just wishful thinking on my part though. <_<

Those elves look like humans with pointy ears, which was the probelm with Elves in DAO. I personnally liked the way Elves looked in DA2.

This conversation is probably moot, though. New engine means updated graphics. I think we have to look at it in comic book terms. Every artist is different, but the character still looks like the character. If they can do that, that's all you can ask for. I'm not as concerned with the elves as much as will Allistar look like Allistar or Isabella look like Isabella. I just hope they can get close enough.

Okay, these look decent now, but when they're moving or even from a profile view, they look... wrong. It's that whole forehead and bridge thing... It's unsettling... I keep thinking that something's wrong with them because it looks like there's something wrong in their foreheads...Nyoka wrote...

Problem is the forehead wasn't flat in our elves, it was protruding outwards as shown here:

Lore states that: Elves are attractive and graceful. This is one reason they are so sought after as 'servants' in Orlais.
The Elves in DA2 are not graceful (with the exception of the Keeper when she walked into the alienage) nor are the bulk of them even close to being attractive. They need to be tweaked to move more fluidly and have a grace about them. Also the super long thin neck, big head, etc. is not attractive as a general rule. (Talis imo looked really freaky due to this) Fix the neck (Ie thicken and shorten), fix the posture, give them better clothing than the super baggy formless stuff and they would begin to look like the lore. There were a few elves in DA2 that were nice looking, just most of them looked bad.
I do not mind them looking basically different from humans, but would prefer if they matched closer to the 'beautiful, graceful, etc.' lore than the oddly proportioned hunchbacks that seemed to fill Kirkwall.

Keep it general style of them the same but improve the way they look within it, more like Fenris, Merrill, Athenril etc. The big eyes, distinctive nose and more prominent ears worked well otherwise in my opinion.
This. Although I'd also like to see the body and neck change a bit. Making them skinnier than humans, even thin compared to humans, is one thing, but now their limbs looked like they were made of spaghetti. And the neck was just too long. That plus the odd bending that sometimes occurred in that area... screamed more "aliens" than "elves".

Indeed. It is very odd with the lore like that, that they look how they do in DA II. Yes, one can argue up and down that there are different standards of attractiveness and that they find each other attractive - and surely those are valid points in a vacuum - but the lore as it stands pretty clearly states that most humans do also, and that seems a bit unbelievable in II.
It would be nice if 'shorter, thinner and having pointy ears' wasn't enough of a visual difference for people to discriminate against elves based on, but I think we all know that isn't the case. That doesn't cause a lore/presentation dissonance the way the DA II designs do.

The first elf looks great. I really really hope they don't use the DAII Elf design. I really REALLY hate it. Please Bioware do a more attractvie design.

@mike_laidlaw Are the elves appearance going to be different in DA3? Wasn't a big fan of the DA2 Elves.
Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw
@Daigon92 Somewhat, but they won’t go back to just humans with pointy ears. Middle ground, I expect.
