It looks like the DAII form of elves. However I look at those and think, yeah! They look pretty good. (In fact not to different from what I picture, barring the lack of 'dip' in the nose bridge.

So.... what happened when it came to execution, then?  (Regarding the bridge, I'm fine with that dip being less prominant, but removing it all together is probably part of what put them in the uncanny valley, along with the unreasonably large eyes.)

firstly, does anyone else think the third girl from the left on top looks like natalie portman? and, I would really like to see an elf that looks like the first guy on the bottom.

Also, I would like to say that what I have said all along was that the execution was lacking, not the idea. They really only had one faceshape in DA2 - pointy. I would say that not much time was spent on elves other than main ones because BW didn't think anyone would really notice.

If Bioware is going to keep the look of the DA2 elves through the actual concept art, I do hope they execute it very well, because I would love to see the elves portrayed above in Iquisition instead of the tall hamsters we got in DA2, even though 3 or 4 of them actually look good.

also the city elves really need to put some damn shoes on, in a 'midevalish' setting, no one should want to walk city streets barefooted where sewage wasn't exactly alocated well after discard.

I hope they go back to DA:O style.

I dont understand the need to change elves appearance from commonly accepted lore...
And why pick on Elves?
Why not change dwarves too? Afterall they are just short humans with big noses... the DA2 design made no sense to me.

If anything can we at least have elves with different eye color. I swear 90% of the elves in DA2 had green eyes. The only one I can remember that didn't was Tallis and...her model had it's own issues.

Personally I loved the redesign of the Elves in DA2 and don't understand all the griping.

In Origins, they were just short humans with pointy ears. It was hardly unique or interesting looking at all. Half the time, if a woman had long hair, I could barely tell if she was supposed to be an elf or not!

I found the Elves overall to be far more attractive in the second game.

I can understand the desire to make elves look nonhuman, but I think DA2 went too far. They looked almost cartoonish, particularly with the ears. They went from "knife ear" to "sword ear" practically.

While I don't think they need to revert back to DAO looks, I hope their features get toned down a bit in DA3.

I agree with the spirit of the redesign, it just looked weird on any elf that didn't get a lot of attention. Fenris and Merril looked good, and I didn't have a problem with Arianni (Feynriel's mother) or Marethari either. I just think some looked better than others.

This was pretty much my take on the issue.  Most of the elves looked fine.  A couple looked like Fab Skeletor.  Just remove the Skeletor.  And be a little less Boy George with the makeup application.

I use the 'Elf Update' and 'Ferelden Elves' mods for DAO (found here -> social.bioware.com/project/4483/  and dragonage.nexusmods.com/mods/3674). They're based on the concept changes that they made in DA2, (same noses, exaggerated ears large irises) but they don't look like weird aliens. I actually think they look damn good for the most part, way better than what we got in DA2, if they look like this in DAI, I'll be happy.

Liked that they didn't look like humans in DA2. One of the complaints I don't sympathize with. Can we change the look of Ogre's because they're ugly?

The DA2 elves were awful, there was nothing good about them. They looked like annorexic children with alien shaped heads, jrpg-wannabe features, and necks like preying mantis. Why should elves suddenly look "unique" anyway? Elves were unique in DA:O because their downtrodden culture turned the ancient/wise/lofty elf trope on its' head and were very interesting. In DA2 there was nothing shown of their culture or hardships, they became bland as they became hideous. Their bodies make no sense. Merrill's head is bigger around than her torso and yet we don't see her ribs and skeleton in sharp relief. There's no way the necessary bones, organs, and muscles would fit in that tiny space with enough fat to hide and smooth everything.

Ideally for me they could make the face more "original" (obvious Avatar knock off) but keep the body looking normal. For instance I thought they did a great job with the female human bodies in DA2. Better than any other BW game so far. If they used the same one for elves but shrunk the boobs and butt somewhat as well as making them short again that would be good.

Other than their ears (which would look better if they were vertical and slightly smaller), these look decent.

The elves definitely need to be overhauled though, almost as much as the darkspawn.

They changed all of the races I believe. Not just one in particular. It's just the elves had the biggest redesign. Arguably because the developers felt they (as well as the Qunari) needed the most work.

Imo there is never going to be an accepted form for the elves simply because it's a subjective matter. As others have said the elves in DA2 looked fine as long as there was special amounts of care put into them i.e. Merrill, Marethari, Fenris etc. But I can understand why someone wouldn't like them. I just don't subscribe to "tumors, aliens, anorexic or fugly etc" because it ends up to be personal preference.

Imo the elves need tweaking, maybe add a bit of meat on their bones, less makeup and more flattering hairstyles ala Fenris and Merrill. The elves just seem to look better with longer hair.

I like the idea of an "in between" like one of the dev's mentioned. I don't want the elves to go back to being short humans with pointy ears. Some of the elves were fine (Fenris, Merrill, Marethari) without looking like they made out with a sand belt, I think it's just an issue of more time.

I don't think dwarves got changed, but their proportions(facial and body) made them very easy to identify; short, stocky, big noses. Elves and qunari, however, were pretty much impossible to differentiate from humans if you couldn't see their ears or didn't have a human in the shot as a point of reference for their height. It didn't feel like we had different species, it felt like we had humans, big tan humans, slightly shorter humans, and dwarves.

In that respect, I think the artists did a much better job in DA2 than in Origins.

Idk I think the dwarves weren't changed ummm face wise? But they made them a bit stockier, rather than short and fat. Might be the placebo effect though.

True - I forgot about the Qunari  -   but I still found the DA2 version  of Elves very unattractive. For some reason seeing these mishappen  Elves stretched my ability to suspend reality too far! LOL. I would not have played as an Elf in DA:O had they looked like they did in DA:2 -

Perhaps because there was only Sten as an example of a Qunari in DA:O I was more able to accept  the change in appearance for that species.

Dwarves may have been tweaked too - (overall they seemed better-looking to me in DA:2 ) but even with tweaking  they still fit with the generally accepted lore for Dwarves.

I also HATED what the artists did to Alistair . It was actually painful for me to watch. Maybe  his look was OK if you chose the  wandering drunk outcome (bloated, slitty eyes, nose job apparently), but  to me he looked like he had been to a bad plastic surgeon in Orlais. Or maybe he went to Quentin for some help!  He looked like Corff for Makers sake!Image IPB Not sure why they had to change Alistairs appearance so radically.

And while I understand why they changed Zevran, it was also painful to see him Image IPB

I really enjoyed DA2 - and  alot of the of the stuff that  has been critiqued in that game didnt bother be too terribly much. I hope they take the critques into consideration for DA:3. The challenge for them is Bioware has such a dvierse audience of likes and dislikes, not all of us are going to be happy. But BIOWARE - foget about the others.... make me happy and fix the Elves!!!! The ears make me think of donkeys, I agree with you. But the other reason they don´t look so bad here is that from those angles the nose-forehead straight line isn´t as obvious, and that´s what (IMO) kills the DA2 elf model.

Problem is the forehead wasn't flat in our elves, it was protruding outwards as shown here:

I think Nyoka hit the nail on the head.

As long as their foreheads aren't overly protrusive like they were in DA2, they would look better.

Ogres are canonically ugly.

Elves aren't.

In DA:O it was established that the Elves are generally viewed as being attractive to humans. If not for that, I wouldn't have had a problem with the Elves being hideous.

Well. The thing is; the lore isn't consistent in the Dragon Age universe.
