Hopefully, it continues. In ME3, I really wish they have more choices for M/M. Most of the relationships in the game are either for straights or lesbians. Of course it would reflect their core straight male audience. Even though they have a more diverse cast, I don't think ME is really champion for S/S since they waited until the third game to actually implement it in fair of controversy. The same with SWTOR, the developers want to cater to their core audience so they remove the same-sex to maximize the most sales. I like Dragon Age in the respect that M/M relationship exists right from the start. There are even M/M NPCs in it.

Nope.
Believe me, playing a lesbian FemShep is just as disappointing as playing a gay ManShep. We got Liara and Sam, you got Kaidan and Cortez.
And Liara was technically not even female. And you guys had to wait till the last game for a gay option.

Point is, we're all in the same boat and the ME 3 approach would kill my soul.

Well, you had Kelly too. And please don't say Liara's technically not female.

I don't think Kelly counts as a romance, at least I never saw it as one. You could flirt, I guess, but not much more than that. There's also the fact that she was the most annoying character in all of the Mass Effect games.
I see your point, though.

And Liara isn't female. She's a member of a monogendered alien species and is therefore neither male nor female. Doesn't mean I don't view her as a s/s romance.

Kelly was actually my favorite f/f LI from ME. She's really sweet.
And asari are not genderless, they are all female. Saying she is technically not female is all right, but I rant when people say they are not women because they refer to each other as woman.

Hmm they also refer to their parents as "mother" and "father," so.

The asari are an amazing construct, but then... I tend to be fascinated with gender. But anyway, kudos to BW for such a great race.

I wish they referred to their parents as mother and mother to be honest.

If people said Garrus is a monogender gender, would you believe it? Liara has boobs and female voice, and everyone uses female pronounce toward her, so she's a female. Female Shepard has Liara, Kelly, Samantha, Diana Adler. I'm not making any negative comments about F/F romance and it's any less important than M/M, but I think ME team puts F/F it in there more for the straight males than for lesbians. At least, that is how I see it for the first two games. Especially consider that female Shepard can even get a lapdance from a stripper. It's just an unfortunate implication in which guys think lesbians are hot, so they're there for more for the straight crowd than anything. Otherwise, there would at least be one M/M option in the second game in some shape or form. It is what it is already. Each Bioware team is different, so if ME team chose to ignore the S/S crowd, I don't think it's fair to take it out an Bioware as a whole. Dragon Age team has always been the best at representing LGBT in their games. For that, I'm glad at least one Bioware team is on our side.

The difference is that there are female turians.

Besides, gender is a social construct and most likely work differently in asari society, since they lack what we perceive as males.

Edit: Also, let's not get too off-topic :wizard:

It's just a case scenario in which they said turians have no gender. It's a bit convinince that the one who has female body and voice to be the monogender race. I think we need to look at it from the real-life perspective. Why did they put it in there? It's more likely for the straight guy's fantasy of an all female race. Why isn't there any M/M relationship or even NPC for that matter until the last game? Why would they remove the M/M option in the first game? It's more about the public's perception and avoid controversy for a new series.

Well, the fact is an all male species wouldn't make any biological sense. But they didn't have to give their all female species a corresponding set of human female secondary sex characteristics that turned them into alien space babes.

IIRC, Kaidan had M/M lines in Mass Effect 1 but they were cut as not being up to par, not to avoid controversy or alter public perception.

If memory serves, the purpose of the asari was to subvert the "blue space babes" often seen in sci-fi media. Asari can be strippers, yes... and mercenaries, diplomats, scientists. They can be infiltrators, they can be politicians, they can be corrupt businesswomen. Thessia's brilliance helped the galaxy in many, many ways. Also, by throwing all of them into the "straight guy's fantasy" you are ignoring all the deep, caring asari romances we've seen - Liara being one of them.

Also, if we are going to talk about Kaidan's ME1 S/S romance we should also talk about how they cut Ashley's, something that seems counter-productive with the lesbian fetish you claim they're aiming for.

And why does an all female race make more sense? They reproduce through their mind, so what they have down low doesn't make that much difference.

Upsetty is probably going for a different angle, but the baby has to come out from somewhere.

No, the translation protocols in Mass Effect do.

More precisely, someone has to create the egg cells.  Then it can either fertilize them themselves, or find a male to do that part.

But yeah, it's a technical point.  There are real world examples of all-female species, but as far as I know an all-male species cannot exist.

This is pretty offtopic though, so blame Dhiro's posts for showing up on my homepage feed.

They could probably make the race to be genderless in term of features, but they make them look like female for probably marketing reasons. I don't get what not up to par about Kaidan's romance in M/M. I think it was pretty on-par and distinctive, consider Shepard tells Liara that he's gay. It was a pretty bold statement, or perhaps too bold.

Bioware can just create them.

I don't mind being hit on or having the option to be a homosexual in DA3 and I'm straight; it adds diversity to the game and it doesn't bother me in the slightest, I actually welcome it.

But they wouldn't make any sense at all.

What they could have done, along similar lines, is create a race that appears to have human male secondary sex characteristics that either have limited sexual dimorphism (meaning they look alike), or is entirely female despite their outwardly masculine (to our standards) appearance.

If they created an all male species they would have to include a laugh track with the Codex entry that explains their biology.

Warhammer orcs spring to mind.. uhh curve ball perhaps but outwardly extreme male characteristics but actually asexual fungi. Could be a fun thing to explore, though like you said it'd need some explaining.

Man, what kind of discussion one remark can create. xD

Back on the topic of M/M:
If Cullen is a companion, I think it's pretty much a given that he'll be romancable. So, realistically speaking, who do you think will be the other male LI?
If we assume the leaks are true, there's Cole, someone who looks like a chevalier and...okay, can't remember anyone else. But who do you think would be most likely to be the LI?
I mean, if what I read about Cole (on Wikipedia *cough*) is true, he might be a very...difficult man. Or whatever he is.

Well ~

I'm kinda rooting for the bearded Warden, but BioWare isn't big on making older looking characters romanceable. There is a particular dark-skinned man in the leaks that look interesting, but possible spoilers prevent me from saying anything.

I would love to romance Cullen. I kinda want one with him since DAO. If there's only 2 romances. It's likely that the second one would be an elf. I'm not a big fan of elves, so I'm not really looking forward to it that much. I would refer for the second one to be Rhys, but Cole would be okay, too. He could be a good LI for my evil LI in subsequent playthrough.
