I remember a ME3 dev commenting that they considered it, but it was very, very expensive and that the resources would be better used somewhere else. Do we need it? No. Personally, I think that the money would be better deployed in the story/character development/gameplay.

But I wouldn't dislike it.

Throwing a fireball into a hut and blowing it up, sounds fun. Has anything like that ever been done in an rpg before?

I hope this works on a grand scale a la Anders/V for Vendetta.

I can see engine handled destructible environments being useful in designing cutscenes but I have reservations on how it can be applied gameplay wise with a game like Dragon Age. It seems very applicable to mages but I don't see how a warrior or rogue would benefit from destructible environments much.

Rogues could use bombs, I suppose. Not sure what Warrors could do. Shield bash walls and doors? Or use a maul to do it?

Well, in ME3 that would mean adding it in to the UE3 engine.  Frostbite 2 already has that in its toolbox.

From what I understand.  It's likely I am oversimplifying.

Don\\ t think they mean to use the engine the same way as Battlefield does, though. I think it just fits as the best option for what they are planning. DA3 doesn`t even have to have destructable enviroments at all.

Even if it is allread in the toolbox those encounters would need to be designed with it in mind.  Someone says "destructible enviroments" I start thinking Red Faction or X-men Legends.

Are we knocking down walls as we see fit? Can I use that table to throw at the enemies?

Those barrels. Do we know what is in them just by sight? Are they explosive? A poison of some sort? Or is it like red dust that can help or harm them?

Red barrels explode,Green barrels poison and Yellow barrels slow enemies speed:D but i just think it would be a cool feature. Not everything has to react to when our character is knocking bad guys out just a few things like in Skyrim.

Cerainly something that can be done to add to the tactical combat. But it's nothing that NEEDS to be done.

Qunari naval invasion + destructible environments.

That would be pretty damn awesome. Not at all sure how workable this is though, or if the trade-off is worth it, but definitely on my list of highly desired things.

I've been hoping for just this for years. Something similar to UFO: enemy Unknown. (= Bad guys are in 2nd floor of the house. Xzar shoot fireball through window in 1st floor. House catches on  fire. Eventually roof and 2nd floor come crashing down,no more  bad guys.Smoke and chaos. good times!

That is exactly how it was environment behaved in UFO. It is mildly deprssing that game released in 1993 still has by far most
credible and satisfying implementation of destructible environment. This
is one of those million things where any and all AAA games have been in
complete, utter stand still for decades now.

So yeaah, never going to happen for DA3. Or any other game:l Not in environment that isn't turn based. Too time consuming and difficult to design and  implement I suspect. Not to mention too taxing for  hardware. Specially since significant portion gamers seem to insist on playing their games on consoles released at some point during final centuries of Neolitic Age.

I'd wager at most we get sligtly more sophisticated version of " hit a barrel. barrel breaks. woho." Ie model used  on Diablo 3 and most FPS games. At best it can give a passing impression of environment actually responding to your actions. Still, it is clear for everyone it is smoke and mirrors at best.
