I realize a lot of similar questions have been asked but I would like some suggestions from veteran gamers.  I do not want to simply ask "I want a game similar to Dragon Age" but list a couple of games that I like and dislike.

RPG games I enjoy (1. being the favorite)
1. Dragon Age Origins
2. KOTOR 1
3. Neverwinter Nights - the game that got me into this genre, it was 'terrible' at first because i hated the graphics, but really grew into it (And the expansions)
4. Neverwinter Nights 2
5. Dragon Age Awakening
6. Dragon Age 2 (quite disappointing given how good DAO was...I think the story could use some improvement)
7. Jade Empire

Notes:
- I am a fan of the Dragon Age/Neverwinter genre as opposed to Star Wars, but KOTOR's storyline and the twists are just great.
- I wish for graphics to be at the level of KOTOR, but Neverwinter Nights was a strange exception because I really like the plot
- I am a fan of deep companion development (romance would be nice, but needs to have depth and not just sex), and also being able to make choices

RPG games that are not fun (1. being not good.  3. being terrible)
1. Fable: Story does not have enough depth, and lack of companions
2. Diablo 2: only fun playing with friends
2. Fate: Much like diablo 2, and only fun with mods but is too repetitive.
3. Oblivion (the mods were the best part of the game, but became boring quickly and made the game imbalanced)

Thank you in advance!

PS: Really hoping that DA3 will be as good as DAO

Have you looked at the Mass Effect Trilogy?

Mass Effect for a start. Think Dragon Age but in a futuristic/Sci Fi setting with guns and tech rather than swords and magic.

Witcher/ Witcher 2. Its not so much a companion based RPG but the story and gameplay is fantastic. The story touches a lot of morally grey areas and the choices you make actually does affect the game world significantly.

The Witcher really is more mature too. Within a few minutes of playing the story in The Witcher 2, there was a soldier sharing is rape stories with me.

No you don't need to read the books. Consider this - one book is basically a collection of short stories detailing Geralt, and the other is actually about the start of the series and the other 4 books haven't been published in english yet.

But if you like the games, then by all means i suggest reading the books. Good books.
