Hello everyone.

So, as far as character creation goes, I think it's safe to assume that the last name will be fixed and we'll be able to enter the first name. Ingame our character will be called either by our last name(maybe) or just Inquisitor - again, this is just an assumption.

We never hear the first name, though, for obvious reasons. How would you like it to have a select number of names to choose from as first name for our character which then could be used ingame by our companions and other NPCs? Of course this would reduce the customisation options somewhat(unless the option of typing in a first name of our choosing would still be there) and it might not be feasible to have to do voice recording for possibly lots of lines with the various names.

Anyway, I'm just curious what your thoughts are on this. :)

I think this was suggested some time ago in one of the DA2 threads.

It's an interesting idea, but I personally would prefer the option to just name my character's what I like, even if it means that I'm called "Warden" or "Inquisitor" for the whole game. The only time that gets awkward (in my opinion) is if your romance is calling you by your title. In my own life, my husband usually never calls me by my name unless he needs to get my attention because my four-year-old has set something on fire or used all my medigels. It's usually "love," or "hon," so I've always liked that option.

Anyway, just my opinion.

This.  Though if Quincy is a set first name, I might just go with it for the lulz.

Obviously, there'd be a lot of VA issues if the full names could be changed. I think for the want of spoken dialogue, lots of cool options are scrapped (multiple origins, name customization, etc.). I didn't like the name Hawke. And as a female (and often playing female characters), it just sort of feels weird to be called by last name. It's kinda odd in the real world.... females aren't called by their surnames too often (well, at least not as much as men).

No to the fixed first names. I am really picky about names. Just the other day, I was scrambling trying to find a first name for Hawke when I started a new game but didn't plan ahead a name and I already laboriously went through the character customization. Yikes, so I had to do some speed-thinking. Names are important and I think they can really make the personality of the person.

It'd be neat if in the CC, there could be a way to morph the VA voice to get it to sound out the name correctly. An intelligent voice output set that'll try to pronounce the name, and then you have some tweaks (modify vowels, etc.) to make it accurate. If not satisfied, then one can use a generic name (like Warden or something....).

Agree with OP. In DAO being called 'Warden' all the time was awkward - it was understandable from strangers, but from Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana, Wynne etc. who have been constantly travelling with you for about a year by the end of the game? I think the developers realised it too - it was lampshaded so many times in party banter. Being called 'Hawke' in DA2 was better but still a bit awkward, especially given that all your companions call each other by first names (apart from Varric, who's just a boss :D).

I think they're recording already, though (a friend of Mark Meer's blogged that he was recording for DA3) so they've made up their minds already.

I would like that when I use the default name (with I tend to do) the npc call me by it when appropriate.

On the subject of Varric...could this whole "issue" with always being called by your last name or title be corrected by having a certain nickname which is only used by your companions or LI? Or would that just be the same thing all over again?

Being called by title or surname is the same for me. It will never be personal, unless you call me by my given name. That's just the way I was raised.

I'm so used not to be called by my given name in a (voiced) game that I really do not mind not hearing it.

In games where there were subtitles (not voiced) it was written in the dialogue that appeared. Which I thought was nice because I could see the name that I choose for my character.

Think it's impossible to hear it in a games..especially when being english voiced and one chooses a name that is impossible to pronounce for a native english person. See as an example for this my name on the BSN Posted ImagePosted Image

That's why I mentioned getting to choose between a bunch of names at the beginning if you wanted to have it voiced. It'll probably never be implemented, but I liked the idea regardless. ^^

I have a tiny bit of hope that we will get a choice of race and they will have different surnames. The majority of the time the pc will be called Inquisitor except by friends who use the surname.

It's farfetched I know.

If the PC is called any of these names, I'll buy three copies.

Posted Image..sorry about that Baal..had to adress the suggestion of the names list too in my reply..

For people who have difficulties giving a name to their PC, and do not want to go with the given one, think your idea is a good one.

I speculated much the same before.
It seems like most want to be able to change it though.

I don't mind being called by the surname (in fact, I'm used to it from real life) and Hawke introduced herself/himself as... well... Hawke. So it made sense everybody knew him/her as Hawke and nothing else.
I doubt she/he even told his/her name to the companions.

I want full control over my actual name. I'm fine with being called 'Inquisitor' if thats my title, and even more fine if they talk around my name, but its used in the subtitle. I thought that worked decently the times I've seen it done.

For example:
Spoken Line: Hello, how are you this fine day?
Subtitle: Hello Jack, how are you this fine day?

Having your name spoken is completely unecessary and our options shouldn't be limted for it. Really how often do you say the name of the person you're directly facing in conversation (as is most Bioware dialogues) Using your title in formal situations and the occasional pet name in more intimate conversations is plenty.
