If I remember well, every origins in DA:O had a surname. Tabris for the city Elf, Brosca for the castless Dwarf and all the other I really don't remember...so I think is possible using that metod with a talking character. So no problem with multiple races. Again.

I don't really liked so much that my characters are only called by surname, but I can live with that. Just, please, let the LI call you by a nik al teast! In ME was terrible listen to a romantic and cute Garrus who called his loved one by surname!

But I don't like the imposted name. I like name my playable character in base to the moment. For exmple, sometimes I like named my Elf with Elfic words from Tolkien. or from other games.

We don't need set first names. Think about how often people close to you (friends, significant others, family, etc.) actually call you by your first name. It's pretty rare. Most of the time people will look at who they're addressing and just speak. You might get pet names from time to time, or friends calling each other "bro" and "dude." But actual names don't come up as often as you'd think.

This is often an issue when new writers start tackling fiction. They'll add names to every piece of dialogue and as a result the conversations feel stilted and weird simply because we don't address each other that way. So there shouldn't be a lot of places where love interests or companions would directly address the PC by their name anyway. When they're talking ABOUT the PC, there's no reason a title or surname wouldn't work.

So let the player use whatever first name they want. It adds to flavor and customization.

I really hope we get something like in Dragon Age: Origins when it comes to a last name. Give us a set last name, but hardly ever use it in conversation... unless we are nobility or something, then it might come up as a family name, but not something that you are constantly refered to as. It would be much better to be refered to by a title or something, similar to 'Warden'. Considering the title of DA3: Inquisition, I wouldn't mind if we were the 'inquisitor' and was refered to as such. I think Dragon Age: Origins also did a good job at using pronouns instead of names when refering to the main character (you, he/she, our leader, him/her, love, hero etc).

I liked the use of Shepard in Mass Effect, but that was because all player characters were Shepard, they were all N7 Alliance marines, and they were all destined to save the galaxy. In DA2 however, since the choices of class and the choices in the story have to feel more impactful to create your own character, a set name doesn't work quite as well. Both the names Hawke and Shepard worked to some degree, but always did bring the character further from being 'mine' and more toward being 'Bioware's'. Like I said, it worked better in ME because you knew from the start that it was a story about Shepard. Dragon Age is more about Thedas, and as such, should allow for a more player-customized player character.

Bah, I'm not explaining this very well, but yeah, I hope for a title being used more than the Hawke/Shepard approach.

If I were to guess at names... well considering the player character might be Orlesian... Something like:

Durand
Dufort
Girard
Laroche
Moreau
Mont-(something)
De, Du, D' -(something)
Fortier
Gascogne
Mercier
Roche
Tolbert
Voclain

Just a few wild speculations.

I just hope that the forced Surnames goes away... what purpose has it served in two games?

You could have just as easily called Hawke - "Hey, Ander's supporting cast - get over here."

Sir/Lady Trollop the fanny flustered. Oh wait, you're serious. How about Delacroix? Translated as "of the cross". Can't get more fitting for an Inquisitor. Dude was probably born one and didn't even know it. Don't know if it would fit Orlaisian or whatever it is they speak in Orlais. They probably don't have a crucifix in the Inquisition, either. Ah well, worth a shot.

If it's Moreau, I'm totally naming my character Joker.

I hope they make the first name canon too, I hate that everyone refers to Hawke and Shepard only by last names and titles.

If they announced the last name of the PC was Gabriel, Raphael or Azrael I would be very happy.

Naming the PC Parson Gotti would be hysterical.

I don't mind my character being called by title/surname with the love interest/family members using a pet name. Kind of like how it was in DA:O. If you were a human noble your father called you Pup as a pet name, while Alistair used 'my dear' or 'love' during the romance.

I prefer the set name, as its more immersive and improve game atmosphere, when people actually call you by name.

I agree with the idea of surnames. They would point at my character as "inquisitor" but if I have a decent surname depending on the race of my character, I'm totally fine with that. I mean, when I played ME1, it was a little bit awkward to be called as "Shepard" but as the story progressed and I got full control of the protagonist's decisions I found myself to be into the character. So, surnames for me are not a big issue, not if the main character is charismatic enough since the beggining. It would be different if we were talking about dragon age origins. So annoying to not have a voice and be called as "warden" all the time. But that, of course is my opinion. No offense.

Since the demo showed surnames for each of the races, I'd expect we'll be referred to by those the majority of the time.

I prefer to use a first name of my own choosing .
Either my real first name or a legendary one, like Roland
