I like the orlesians from mark of the assassin but their designs were too much on the ridiculous side of the "matches the orlesian lore vs looks ridiculously infantile" double edged sword

I doubt that. The devs are probably going back to the generic DAO style, just more "HD" thanks to the new engine/hardware. It makes sense as DAO is more in line with DnD and the internet seems to hate everything even remotedly related to DA2.Rockpopple wrote...
The artstyle of DA2 was, for the most part, an improvement on the generic look of Origins. In a design sense, generic can kill. Visual distinctiveness is an important element of a big game.
That being said, that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement, especially using the new engine. I'm sure things will end up looking vastly different than Origins and DA2. I'm looking forward to it.
BioWare is too eager to please the crowds to really push its own vision and EA sure wont discourage such approach.

Yeah. This was pretty much my reaction to the Orlesians in DA2. It's like you said, they just looked ridiculous.filetemo wrote...
I think the style of DA2 was too much flamboyant to be taken seriously.

Yeah, the DA2 art style was too cartoonish. I prefer more realistic approach. We have dx11, so please Bioware, use it to make the game more realistic, dark fantasy like, grytty and gothic.

That has nothing to do with art style.

They need a different art director and I'm not sure that's changed. I thought it was the character concepts and vast swaths of space with little or no detail that made art design in DA2 so bad. I can't take the dark spawn seriously, the ogres with metal bras or the alien elves. And it's clear the team didn't have time to polish the details. The overall look is just too sparse.
And if we are to believe the pre release talk on DA2, that change in art direction with more negative space, the alien looking elves, lack of detail across the world and sharp edges was all a purposeful decision to make the game look less "generic."
Even with a potentially better technical graphics engine with Frostbite 2, its not clear as of yet what BioWare is going to do with it or how they'll end up leveraging their art to work best with what Frostbite 2 can do well.

Origins was pretty bland and had some awful armour and clothing designs, but it did have a better atmosphere and was more realistic compared to DA2. Frankly I wouldn't say no to a game that had the relative realism and feel of Origins, but with more style than that game had and less dark and dingy all the time, get a bit more colour in there.

DA2 was a step in a better direction (for me) as it introduced a more distinctive art style. However, the loss of the tonal quality that the old art style had was a disappointment. I'm a fan of anime and Japanese products, but DA2 suffered for using the over the top style (though I did find that the elf designs weren't bad at all... It was kind of nice to see elves portrayed differently from the norm).
For DA3, I'd like to see a distinctive art style as well as the return of the darker and grittier tonal quality that Origins had in its art style. That's all I'm hoping for there. Other than that, I just want environments that I feel excited about going through. That's my opinion though.

I wonder if the tight schedual may have played a role in the minimal aesthetic. If Bioware wants to have something distinct and with substance, I say they tone down the exaggerated bits like the jaggy armors, big swords, big juggs, bizarre horns on the ogres, etc. They should think form and function when designing stuff, and yes, strive for more realism. More environment effects too.
My two cents.

I don't know anything about this new engine, but I hope the stick with a more stylized and less photorealistic approach.

Elsewhere: people who do know what an art style is distill japanese comic books down to their common characteristics which make them so recognizable to anyone with a pair of eyes.Upsettingshorts wrote...

Where did you find this image? It, in my opinion, fits exactly what I'm looking for from the DA franchise when it comes to artistic style. This holds the dark and gritty look that Origins had, while adding in a distinctive style that was missing from that game (yet is stronger and more in tune with the universe, IMO, than 2's).

If there could be a happy medium between the first and second that would be great.

I liked the general aesthetics of DA2 in terms of character design and... motif? I think that's the word I'm looking for...
However, the city environments were looking a little barren (reffing to the exteriors, I thought the interiors were fine.)
If I had to pinpoint what was off to me: lack of clutter.
I could understand wanting to keep the streets open in DA2 to account for combat (if that was the reason, I have no idea), but the restricting camera kind of made the move pointless, imo. Personally, I couldn't make proper use of the open area, only being able to scroll out so far.
Even then, livening the city walls up with your usual fodder (barrels, market stalls, drapery, plants, you name it) would do WONDERS for the overall look of the city environments without posing too much of a hindrance to combat.
I agree 100%. And not just because your avatar totally looks like mine.
I think the biggest improvement in DA2 was in the OUTDOOR areas. The TREES in Origins were, frankly, godawful. They look much, much, MUCH better in DA2. Some of the choices in DA2 had me scratching my head--slums with cathedral ceilings, for instance. Oh, I know they did that so you could move the camera around without it constantly zooming into the back of your character's head, but it would have felt much, er, slummier if they had tight confines and narrow corridors.
Maybe they'll wise up this time and put the slums OUTDOORS, in a tent city among ruins or similar. That would do a good job of driving home that hey, here is a wretched hive of scum and villany without also fooking with the camera angles.
I would also like to petition for some WEATHER. Heck, you could solve some of your "reused areas" problem right there. Take the map. Chop off 1/3 of it. FILL IT WITH EVIL SMOKE. Look, it's a "new" area.

It was a little difficult for me to navigate back here thanks to all the stupid romance threads that keep popping up. Some people really need to get out more.
Anyway, I hated the darkspawn in DA2. They looked so ****ing stupid. Like darkspawn suffering from down syndrome.
this was the thing that bothered me the most in Dragon age 2 was the darkspawn...they look soo fricken pale!!! and their armor is really bad to.. i hope that the do the Dragon age Darkspawn in DA3..
