For a long while I have been irritated (to strong a word)  by the main character not being able to react to party chat going on behind them.
I've always wanted to tell Wynn to let Zev rest his head in her bosom, she might find she rather enjoyed it, I did!

If you're in a relationship with one of them it is particularly annoying not being able to react.

In Origins Morrigan was always sniping, in particular at Alistair. I want to tell her to shut up, and give various reasons why, or get out and go back to her mother.
You can call her a ****, but it's not relevant to a particular conversation.

in DA2 I'd love to interact with some of Isabela's chat with Fenris!
Sebastian wants to dob in my apostates. Would I really have someone like that as a friend? No, not the way I played it, and certainly not once living with Anders. I want to tell him to shut up, be friendly, and kind to my friends. And all that preaching! The times I've wanted to say, stay in the Chantry, Starkhaven's better off not being led by a zealot.
When he suggests to Fenris that they tell the templars, I'd have turned round: that's my huisband you're talking about. bugger off I never want to see or hear from you again.

I think the devs tried that in Legacy DLC where Hawke responded to a party banter between Isabella and Sibling, etc. Some people liked it; some didn't.

But if the main protagonist were to have a say in a banter, and have the choice to say what he/she wants to say, then it would be a conversation with fixed camera, animation, and dialogue list/wheel. It wouldn't exactly be the party banter.

Perhaps the banters would be more engrossing if it were to involve the third member of the party that is not the protagonist. Then it would truly feel like a "party" banter.

They actually did include Hawke in the party banter in the DLC, and I thought it worked well. I believe the banter was different depending on which "personality" the game determined your Hawke had based on your dialogue choices (diplomatic, sarcastic, or aggressive) I thought that worked very well. Having to stop the game to choose something from a dialogue wheel during every party banter would make party banter a hassle and would ruin a great feature imo.

I've got mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, I didn't like that in DA:O, you would just stand there while your companions were talking, sometimes about you, and you couldn't do anything. But on the other, having my character speak without any prompt on what to say is... no. I don't like the autodialog or personality thing. You don't react the same way for every situation, so just because I yelled at the last eight people I spoke to doesn't mean I want to yell at my sibiling for flirting with another companion. I'm not sure which I'd prefer though.

I'm more concerned about not being able to talk with party members at anytime other than when they're at home or some other pre-determined destination. I prefer the way it was in Origins and KOTOR.

I actually preferred DA2's method because you could only talk to them when they had something to say. That way you didn't have to just keep checking in case they had something new to say and if they didn't they would just be like, "What do you wish of me?" and then you kind of awkwardly had to be like, "Oh nevermind...." I did miss being able to have PDA's with my romance at any time though. :P

That's the problem. I should be able to talk to them regardless, not just when the game allows me to. All they would need to do is make the characters more active and bring up topics to the player instead of the player always having to initiate the conversation.

It's a pretty simple fix. But like with everything else, BioWare goes overboard and starts cutting.

I don't want Bioware to put words in my character's mouth. Didn't like it with Mass Effect 3, won't like it here.

But BioWare has been putting words in your character's mouths since they started. Do you want to play as a mute character?

Actually, that would be kind of interesting...

A crazy idea...
While roaming party banter starts and a small QTE pops up with nice, sarcasm, and mean icons. The PC will then retort based on your choice. If you choose to ignore it, the PC will remain silent. Mind you, you still won't know what the PC will respond with. But it's slightly better then auto banter from the PC.

quite like that

I really think you should be able to have a choice of comment when someone refers to you or your squeeze

of course it's more money, but that's outside pressure put on Bioware. They seem to want to get things right, even if it sometimes doesn't work, but if there are idiots out there who don't buy their games, they won't get the cash in

Tallis #492: What do you call it when you kill people and take all their stuff?

Sarcastic/Charming Hawke: Adventuring!

I'm just guessing that she was #492. DA:O's Sten was Sten #1054 I think. How do they identify the different people?

"Sten, I have a task for you. No. The other Sten. No. Sten. That Sten. The one to your left. No to the left of the other Sten. The one I'm pointing at! I'm pointing right at you! Not you! Him! Gah!"

Think i prefer the DA2 main game scheme of things as i prefer not having words put in my characters mouth during part banter or if there are words they should be neutral ones. Think there is a danger of overusing dominant tone even if it is an interesting way to deal where auto-dialogue is necessary. If i'm an apostate i expect to get a lecture from a rabid mage hater if i am crazy enough to include them in my party.

Sebastian wants to dob in my apostates.

This is the problem - Party Banter has sometimes included things that the Warden or Hawke *would* respond to. It's easy to ignore mild bickering, but major things like this cannot be restricted to "Party Banter".

In Dragon Age 2, Sebastian talks about throwing Merrill and Anders to the Templars and Hawke just idly stands there ignoring it. Things as heavy duty as this should be full blown conversations, players should have the opportunity to yell in Sebastian's face and smack him over the head with something heavy.

I don't care what they do with the light bickering, but the big stuff like this needs to be in actual conversations between Player and NPC, even if they're just quick conversations to hear their concerns and tell them to shut it.
