Whether it's pre-order or CE, it should not have any story content that is exclusive to it, whether it's a mission, or a companion. All story content should be available to the standard edition of the game, even if the game is bought one year after release.

Imo some bonuses pre-order or CE could have are:
1) Artbook/soundtracks;
2) Exclusive items, though I hope I don't find a box in my home full of OP gear that makes me OP for the first chapter or even the whole game;
3) Armor/companion skins, has to be really well done though. Especially item skins that can be 'transmogged' into other items.
4) Weird stuff that doesn't take away from the experience such as playing the main campaign with a darkspawn skin (similar to playing feeding frenzy 2 as the intruder)

Here's the thing I really hate, is having a different bonus for gamestop, one for EB, one for Origin, one for Steam, one for Burger King, and so on.

How many times do you think I'm going to preorder your game? I'm sure as hell not going to order 12 copies of the game so I can get all the goodies. That means that there is content out there that I as a fan will NEVER get to enjoy because I can't order 63 copies of the game from different retailers before launch.

I'm STILL pissed off that I can't get Terminus Armor and the blackhole heavy weapon thing for ME2. (not that I really mind anymore since you destroyed the entire franchise).

So how about this. . . you still make all the little goodies for all the retail places, but then you have to include ALL of that stuff with the CE.

Retailer exclusives annoy me. I don't mind pre-order incentives, but make it/them available in every pre-order, not just pre-orders from a certain store.

I don't mind seeing a few in-game extras in Collector's Editions. An equipment pack would do me just fine. Bonus characters, if they plan on providing one, should be available in every new purchase (a la Zaeed and Shale), in my opinion.

More often than not such exclusives leads to me and many other being simply unable to get them at all. Because they're only available in select countries. At this point I really wonder how low Bioware will go as EA pushing it.
If there are too many different bonuses and no reasonable way to get them all I often just never buy the game at all.

shale really pushed  the line of day one dlc in my opinion despite the fact he came with every new copy, the character was just to essential to the plot, especially te ozzamar arc, its was if it was cut out of the game and "sold" later

I thought the zaeed dlc was good justification to sell with new copies though

Story based DLC is going to happen, whether we like it or not. I definitely agree, though, about putting companions in DLC, it always ends up feeling incomplete and a waste of potential, if the character is at all interesting.

I don't mind mission based DLC, especially if its a good story. But characters are never given enough attention when included in DLC. I really wish Bioware would move away from this.

they said during the gamescom that players want day1 dlc so most likely there will be an extra character only included in some kinds of deluxe edition of the game.

His name will be javik and he will have an insignificant impact on the game.  He will ship already installed on the disk you simply pay $10 to unlock him.  New RNG store system will allow users to pay real money for random items like health potions and magic potions that you are unable to beat the game without.  Also a new unlock system where you will get ultra rare swords and staffs you level up 1-10 and if you spend $1800 on promo items like comics and toy action figures and things you really dont want -- you will recieve codes to unlock the ultimate collector sword (which is also technically already coded on the game disks and you paid for).  There is also a new feature call aptly: give us money where for a mere $50 a splash screen simpy pops up for 5 seconds and says "reward."  Subsequent $50 splash screen give the option to make your ultimate decision:  green, blue, or red.

Unless you somehow make it law to ban day 1 exclusives, EA will never stop demanding their developers continue this consumer-despising act.
Well even if there was a collector's edition that had cool things like an art book, it probably wouldn't reach international shores, or be part of some rubbish competition.
Honestly, I just want game manuals back, cases are depressing without them.

Videogames costs alot of money. Gamers are not willing to buy games above the 60 Bucks price point without further incentives. Day One DLC provides more content that would have otherwise been cut.
I don´t see anything wrong with that if you want more games to be produced.
If you have not noticed Game Developers are dying left and right.

If Bioware needs Day One DLC to be more profitable and keep on existing, I am all for it.

Retailer exclusives are more so retailers promote their game, NOT to try and get multiple pre-orders. Another way of saying it is this; You are not the one being given incentive. Gamestop promotes _____ more, because they are thrown a bone.

Free content with new copies of the game I get. I just don't like per-order only stuff and hate retailer specific stuff.

yeah the preorder things really need to be more  universal, seem gamestop got the better exclusive for the most parts of the games like in dishonored game that is coming out next month is getting some really good things that will fit my playstyle

Retailer exclusives are annoying, but ok, I don't want them anyway, it lessens by gaming experience by giving me op starting gear.

As for Day 1 DLC, for me that's a no go, if they want to ****** on me they should at least have the curtesy to call it rain. By either giving it out for free to bought who bought it the game first hand or simply releasing it a few weeks after the game.

Otherwise they could just make DLC that doesn't look like it ws blatantly ripped out of the vanilla game, DLC like "From Ashes" tend to give me that (@BioWare of course false) impression that it was in fact meant to be in the game to beginn with. DLC like Legacy or Mota doesn't do that, regardless of release date.

Like I said, I understand that it has to happen, but other than Shale, who was integrated really well, DLC characters like Kasumi, Zaeed, Javik, and even Sebastian are all lacking compared to typical Bioware companions.  Bioware is known for making really good characters.  Why make people pay for a half baked, lesser character, if they could instead focus on making the day one DLC a really interesting quest, with unique loot?  They add new missions for character DLC anyway, but eliminating the new character would let them focus on making the DLC even better, and would not draw attention away from a well made mission towards a character who is thinly characterized and boring compared to the "full" companions who are part of the base game.

Just my two cents, but I think it bears consideration.  If they can't make DLC characters as deep and interesting as base game characters, they should scrap them and focus on good DLC missions.

I'm fine with preorder DLC. I'm fine with CE bonuses. I'm fine with day 1 DLC.

But those darned retailer exclusive DLCs... =/ I don't want to spend money on multiple copies for the content. And if I pick up the content code from eBay instead then BW didn't make any money off that purchase either way.

Hmm...I know what you mean but Javik and Sebastian were integrated rather well, I thought.
Though I think that taking a Sidequest arc as bonus content would be better instead of a character.
Characters are just to near to the heart of bioware games. ergo = getting a feeling of cutout content.

By keep on existing I think you mean 'survive under EA'
I don't know about that.
I'd rather go with a quick death than a long, painful one.
