Whether it's pre-order or CE, it should not have any story content that is exclusive to it, whether it's a mission, or a companion. All story content should be available to the standard edition of the game, even if the game is bought one year after release.
Imo some bonuses pre-order or CE could have are:
1) Artbook/soundtracks;
2) Exclusive items, though I hope I don't find a box in my home full of OP gear that makes me OP for the first chapter or even the whole game;
3) Armor/companion skins, has to be really well done though. Especially item skins that can be 'transmogged' into other items.
4) Weird stuff that doesn't take away from the experience such as playing the main campaign with a darkspawn skin (similar to playing feeding frenzy 2 as the intruder)
Agreed.
If there's any "bonus" story content, it should be free to all new copies. Think The Stone Prisoner, not The Exiled Prince.

I'm not against 1 day DLC if it weren't something that was simply ripped from the game but actual additional content, but I'm skeptical as to how many developers will go to the bother these days and not simply go with cutting off part of the game to sell it for an additional cost.

I can understand Collector's Editions (if you're willing to pay more; you get more), but different bonuses depending on where you buy your copy? No, please don't do that again Bioware.

Op doesn't speak for me, I will be ordering the CE whether it be 60 or 100.I'm not about to let qualms of equality inconvenience me.
This is the worse kind of 'fan' I have ever seen.
Oh, because I am going to buy CE no matter what, you guys who buy the standard edition deserves less content, and totally deserves a ripoff.
What?

I think they do them in exchange for advertising (so Gamestop will feature the game prominently in their stores, etc.), but I really wish they had something else to trade for it (or that they would only guarantee the exclusivity for a certain period of time, and then make the items available for other players after that).
I'm fine with other DLC. If circumstances allow, I plan to get the CE of DA3. Hopefully the CE package turns out better than ME3 (actually, even the Signature Edition of DA2 feels more substantial to me than the ME3 CE), and no, Mark, I don't need another mapkin.

shale really pushed the line of day one dlc in my opinion despite the fact he came with every new copy, the character was just to essential to the plot, especially te ozzamar arc, its was if it was cut out of the game and "sold" later
I thought the zaeed dlc was good justification to sell with new copies though
Shale was cut out of the game, the same way a lot of things get cut from the game. THere was a time extension, however, when we ended up making console version.
The alternative to DLC would have, unfortunately, been no Shale at all :\\

I have no problem waiting for promotional dlc to run its course, but I do have a big problem with permanently exclusive promotional content. No content should ever be permanently unavailable to the player. If Bioware can stay committed to releasing this content post-launch, then I see no problem with it.
As for Day 1 DLC companions, that is damn near guaranteed. I would say that Bioware needs to find a sweet spot of an interesting character, that doesn't feel "too important." I think Shale, Zaeed and Sebastian are all good examples of this, while obviously people did not respond well to Javik.

The day they announced they were pushing back the PC release, I said, "Now there is time for Shale".
And lo, there was time for Shale.

Noted. You hate hate hate hate retailer-specific DLC
Personally I have always only seen the items as fluff items, so they never bothered me. Why does it bother you? Just because you want ALL the goodies?
EDIT: That sounds dismissive. More just "is there anything more to it than that?"

That's exactly it. Your goal is to get me emotionally invested in this game, right? Well if I'm invested like you want me to be, then I want every single scrap of content that I can possibly experience. Feeling that way and then knowing there's some cool thing out there that I can't have because I didn't order from the "right" retailer is infuriating.

Just to give my feedback to this question. Yes. The example I have used over the years is from ME2 and Gamestop exclusive Blackstorm Projector. I love this gun for a multitude of reasons. It is one of the most fun and effective Heavy Weapons to use in ME2. But what is even more important to me are the aesthetics. In ME2, heavy weapons are mandatory to carry, you cannot unequip them. Therefore, the only cosmetic customization options we have are to change which HW we use. Frankly, I do not like the functionality or the design of any of the other HWs in ME2. When I have to look at the back of my Shepard for 30+ hours, I want to like what I'm looking at. The sleek black and red design of the Blackstorm Projector looked great on my sleek black N7 armor.
Now, this item has never been released by Bioware. If you didn't get it from Gamestop, you are officially out of luck. There have been people buying and selling this item on ebay for upwards of 300 dollars.
Frankly, every player should have the option to have all the fluff. I know having this 1 gun made each and every one of my ME2 playthroughs a fraction of a percent better. And that is something that every player should have the opportunity to have. I say opportunity because I don't mean this content should be included in the base game, or given away for free, I do mean that at some point, this content should be available to the general public to buy or unlock. I am sure that even today, years after ME2, if Bioware sold the Blackstorm Projector as 2-3$ micro-DLC, there would be a number of long-time fans still going out of their way to buy the gun.

As for story DLC - I doubt someone will ever trust BioWare again after story with Javik even if they'll speak the truth.

It doesn't matter if it's a non important item or something - If I am paying £40 or more for a game, I should be able to get all the content. If something is a preorder bonus, it should be a preorder bonus everywhere.
A good example recently is Fifa 13. I know it's not a BioWare game but it's coming from EA at least. So. Amazon has a bonus of 10k EASFC credits. GAME has a bonus of the adidas 'all star team' to be used in the game. I preordered from ShopTo so I get no preorder bonus.
Now on this occasion, it doesn't bother me at all because I don't want any of those bonuses but if it was Dragon Age, I would want everything. I love using ShopTo. I refuse to use GAME again because of the way they handled Mass Effect 3 and I just generally don't trust Amazon with delivery. So if a really good bonus comes out for Dragon Age 3, I should be able to get it by preordering at ShopTo. I shouldn't have to use a shop I don't trust just for a bit of content.
I am completely fine with the Collectors Edition of the game getting content for free just as long as it's released in the microsoft/psn store so everyone who gets the regular version has the option to buy it (like Sebastian in DA2 and Javik in ME3).
Any 'exclusive' things in the CE should be things like a soundtrack or maybe a little game related physical item. Maybe a nice art book. Not ingame content.
All dlc should be available to everyone regardless of edition purchased or where they live.
