While I'm not sure how believable this kind of character would be in a dark setting such as DA's, I would like to see a geeky/nerdy bookworm type guy (probably would work better as a mage?). One who is rather awkward socially, and bonus points if he is too consumed with his notes to notice flirting...or it goes way over his head.
Maybe something along the lines of Vector in ToR, where he wouldn't pick up on initial flirting at all.
I find that cute and I certainly wouldn't mind a more light-hearted romance option after Anders and Fenris (even though I love Fenris to death!)

OMG I LOVE SAND!! He should have been an LI! Sure, he's super arrogant, abrasive and viciously sarcastic (*swoon*) but he's also genuinely talented, intelligent, helpful, loyal, and shows a tender side if you're kind and appreciative of him. (Kind of like Morrigan.)
I agree that Sand is one of those characters that doesn't seem that special on paper (another lawful neutral elven wizard, really? A bitter, sarcastic, arrogant mage, really?), but once you experience the final product in person--see the little twists the writers gave to his character and the life the voice actor breathed into him--he leaves one of the biggest impressions in the game. When he preps you for your trial for murder and you thank him for being your attorney (which he was forced to do under duress from a third party) he sounds surprised but very touched by the player's kindness. I can easily see a lucky girl who can win his heart make it around his barbs.
Whatever we do get, I hope it isn't the usual "Knight in Shining Armor" versus Byronic Hero. They did very well with Alistiair and Zevran in DA:O, but in a way they still followed the usual Paladin versus Rogue archetypes. It seems that BioWare thinks we want either priggish, prudish boy scouts OR mad, bad, dangerous to know hooligans. (And for DA2, they gave us two of the latter.) Some of us like a third option who's neutral but fun and witty (like Varric and Sand).
same here!Sand was great, and that reaction great. a little like Morrigan when you thanks her after ostragar. (is Morrigan the secret daughter of Sand?) Can't we aske to have Sant teleported from NWN2 in DA3? Pleeeeeeeeeese!
Oh god Sand. If I ever fangirled over anyone it was him.

My ideas...
BlueMoonSeraphim wrote...
Hmmm... My ideas for male love interests:
1) A sexy, manly playboy - the love 'em and leave 'em type. He has a dark sense of humor and is very confident of himself. Very capable in battle and devoted to his mission. He has a long list of conquests but doesn't talk about them; instead, he has a quiet way of exuding sexiness. He teases you and gives you a once-over from time to time. If you sleep with him too quickly, he'll write you off as another conquest and tell you sticking around is not his way. You have to work to get into his heart - let the tension build and give him time to go crazy for you. When he falls for you, he congratulates you on being the first woman to keep him interested and comments about how he'll be curious to see how a relationship will turn out. You can then tell him he better be the one to keep you interested... or maybe that sticking around is not *your* way.
2) A man who believes loving is weakness. He's strong, capable, and serious; he reads, he trains, he ponders. You see him looking all sexy, sweaty, and contemplative as he works out in the team's down-time. He's seen the destructive power of love and resists its hold on him. The last time he fell for someone, it ended badly, but he's been working hard on being a strong leader and a good man since. He begins to admire you for your choices and realizes he is attracted to you. He is torn between falling for you/giving into love and keeping himself strong and detached. When he finally confesses his love, it's eating him up inside and he can't take it anymore. Your relationship is passionate like a roaring fire, but does he still believe it weakens him?
3) The noble knight-in-shining armor who falls in love with you at first sight. He is handsome, witty, polite, and enamored by your beauty. He courts you in a traditional way. He finds the opportune moments to compliment you and make you blush. He is intrigued by winning you over, being as strong and intelligent as you are. When you are finally won over by his compliments, gifts, and deeds, your romance is beautiful. He wants to take you dancing, woo you by the fire, talk about your deepest desires under the stars. He stands up for you to other companions and enemies and is a gentleman. He kisses you passionately. He wants to make "an honest woman" out of you and seeks to marry you.
And I approve of this:

I actually don't care about certain archetypes as I'm not very fussy about virtual romances.
All I want are some conflicts. Like when Alistair was mad about my Warden sacrificing Isolde. Or like the quarrels Hawke had with Carver. But more intensively. Let my heroine argue and then scream and bite and claw and weep bitter tears of rage... Nevermind.
A male Morrigan sounds nice. I approve.

This would make a great character, I find these ideas for a male character amazing, that would be such I cool thing to see in a character:DSylvanpyxie wrote...
I have no name to offer but a basic archetype i'd like to see:
Someone bitter and angry, but shielded by humour, arrogance and wit. Someone who is openly fun amongst the inevitable crazies, yet also suffers from pains and torments himself. Instead of being dominated by their tragedies, they hide it all behind fake smiles and charming misdirection.
Basically - Someone dashing, charming, a little, tiny bit arrogant and fun on the surface yet deep, complex and astonishingly darker and more jaded the further you progress into the relationship.
Since this post is getting a lot of attention, I figure I'll post this here, since it's a greater explanation of what I'm talking about, and more likely to receive notice if it's here and not on some no-name post on Page 3:Page 3 quote from Sylvanpyxie:
It isn't a character archetype that is hiding sorrow, it's a character archetype that has moved so far beyond sorrow that all they have left is hatred, anger and bitterness. The personality I suggested isn't the type of character that would weep into his pillow, much more likely to scream bloody murder in someone's face and threaten bodily harm, or fob them off with a joke I suppose.
Now that it's clarified, I imagine there won't be a lot of interested in it.
----------
Self loathing is a powerful thing. We've seen companions hate the world, i'd like to see a companion hate themselves for a change, is that twisted? I also like the concept of a romance getting worse before it gets better.
A character that starts off charming, flirty and ultimately appealing, then he opens up and turns out to be a broken, battered mess of a man, it appeals to me. I like to be surprised, and the majority of romances in RPGs have always been exactly what they say on the tin and just once i'd like to be surprised by the content.
It also offers two distinct conclusions to the romance - You encourage his self destructive nature, turning him into a twisted, contemptuous wreck of a man, or you push him towards solemn acceptance and healing, eventually becoming a genuinely happy person.
I don't know, there's just something about the whole archetype appeals to me. Maybe it's my love of tragedy.

I just want a likeable character. Allistair and Zevran in the first game were fine. Fenris and Anders in DA2 were NOT fine. Characters that are that self-obsessed are not likeable to me. Both had some serious anger issues which should put off most people seeking relationships.
I agree. I feel like DA2 went for extremes. Anders was difficult for my Hawke to support, and Fenris rivalmance was palatable, but he was still a bit too bloodthirsty for my Hawke to take. Sebastian rivalmance was probably the best of the male LI options for my Hawke, but that romance felt incomplete (especially when he didn't come by after Leandra...).
I do think there is something to be said for the types of the romance in which your PC heals a tortured man or a LI who fights your PC on everything and later realizes he loves her/him... but from what I understand, many players wanted to kill Anders and Fenris for what they did during the story. I think that means it was a bit difficult for their PCs to care about them.

You know, after hearing about that survey leak and the Potential companions, this guy is what I imagine the Tevinter Magister, "Dorian" to look like.
I'd like that.
