I just want an interesting character that will have my back and that I can relate to. An older gentleman would be nice, a knight or a mage, human or elf. (Not really picky about that sort of detail.) I just hope he differs from previous female straight romances in the series but is well-written, expertly cast, and adds a lot of depth and replay ability to the game.

In other words, I think I'd like to be surprised this time around.

I have no name to offer but a basic archetype i'd like to see:

Someone bitter and angry, but shielded by humour, arrogance and wit. Someone who is openly fun amongst the inevitable crazies, yet also suffers from pains and torments himself. Instead of being dominated by their tragedies, they hide it all behind fake smiles and charming misdirection.

Basically - Someone dashing, charming, a little, tiny bit arrogant and fun on the surface yet deep, complex and astonishingly darker and more jaded the further you progress into the relationship.

No whiny, broody tortured dudes that the fangirls want to fix with sex scenes. And that's it, really.

However, I REALLY liked all romances being available to both genders, but can we end the dude macking on my Warden/ Hawke, regardless of who they are involved with and their own orientation? I didn't want to have to explain to Anders for 6 years that I wasn't interested in his Twilightesque obsession.

Seriously, I wanted to hand him an in game copy of that book by Greg Behrendt (DLC item pack item, $2.99!)

I must confess, I wasn't expecting my archetype to be so popular..

I'm pleasantly surprised.

Since I have a nice funny normal guy in real life, I don't mind playing a game with a drama drenched love interest. Bring on the whiners, brooders, untrustworthy types, I say! It's a game and I want something heart-wrenching and bittersweet. It makes a much better story. As happy as I am with my real life relationship, it would be sooooo boring in a game.

That said, I would love to see Cullen introduced as a LI. Mostly because I think he's going to have some Templar issues -- possible lyrium addiction, two traumatic experiences -- so much potential for a dramatic love story!

I definitely prefer issues, to a point. Issues make things fun, however eveyone in DAO had issues, it just wasn't their primary character contruct (Anders hates Templars and the Circle, the end. Fenris hates mages and is a runaway slave, the end). Although, I could make the argument Leliana was pretty shallow (also why I like bisexual LI's, I wanted Morrigan but damn woman was straight, could've given Dark Ritual an interesting angle)

They can have personality above that, Anders could still be snarky and tortured. Merrill can be more than defensive and clueless (whihc after seeing Merrill from Origins before new Merrill, kind of annoyed me. I think she would get the double entendres, just saying)

Since this post is getting a lot of attention, I figure I'll post this here, since it's a greater explanation of what I'm talking about, and more likely to receive notice if it's here and not on some no-name post on Page 3:

Page 3 quote from Sylvanpyxie:

It isn't a character archetype that is hiding sorrow, it's a character archetype that has moved so far beyond sorrow that all they have left is hatred, anger and bitterness. The personality I suggested isn't the type of character that would weep into his pillow, much more likely to scream bloody murder in someone's face and threaten bodily harm, or fob them off with a joke I suppose.

Now that it's clarified, I imagine there won't be a lot of interested in it.

----------

Self loathing is a powerful thing. We've seen companions hate the world, i'd like to see a companion hate themselves for a change, is that twisted? I also like the concept of a romance getting worse before it gets better.

A character that starts off charming, flirty and ultimately appealing, then he opens up and turns out to be a broken, battered mess of a man, it appeals to me. I like to be surprised, and the majority of romances in RPGs have always been exactly what they say on the tin and just once i'd like to be surprised by the content.

It also offers two distinct conclusions to the romance - You encourage his self destructive nature, turning him into a twisted, contemptuous wreck of a man, or you push him towards solemn acceptance and healing, eventually becoming a genuinely happy person.

I don't know, there's just something about the whole archetype appeals to me. Maybe it's my love of tragedy.

This is an awesome suggestion. Image IPB

I would love to have Cullen or Unchaste Sebastian as a LI Image IPB. I was strangely drawn to Cullen in DAO as he was torn a bit by his duty and his feelings for Amell, and then I became completely enamored by him in DA2 with his Knight in Shining Armor ways. In DA2 he was so damned honorable it melted my heart. Another thing that I think is interesting is after what he went through in the Tower in DAO, he still had the guts to stand up for Hawke when he/she would decide to let mages go when siding with the Templars.

I would like to see an unchaste Sebastian as well. When I played DA2 and found out he had a wild/bad boy side, I was intrigued being that he had taken vows and then Jennifer Helper, his writer revealed in his thread that his story wasn't finished yet. I think he has a lot of potential for a great story Image IPB.  And again these are just my personal opinions and everyone may not agree.

Male Morrigan (dark, mysterious, own agenda) sounds good.
An older (not old) LI sounds good too, kinda Bann Teagan-esque (like the pic nightcobra8928 showed)
And yeah, just a down-right evil guy. Probably more of a Loki here. Who has no reason to be evil (such as overlooked as a child, blah) apart from they enjoy it.

I don't want someone whiny or damaged either who the PC has to fix.
I'm a teenager, my life is filled with enough angst.

Edit: The return of Carver, Cullen and Sebastian as LI's would be welcomed too though

Unchaste Sebastian as a LI

Funnily enough, Sebastian could quite easily fit into the archetype I created on Page 1.

After the death of Elthina and his inability to protect her, Sebastian is going to be in a bad place. If he loses his fight for Starkhaven? Even worse place. There's a huge post I recently put up on his support thread that goes into more detail on it, but overall he'd fit the archetype quite well.

Edit: English failures.

sadly the problem with sebastian is some of us sent him packing when he wanted us to kill anders and refused to do so, so him returning as a li would be as much of a slap in the face as those who killed anders having him return as a li :(

Honestly, I just want someone to take me for a good ride (not just in the dirty way). Good story that is compelling and a little bit messed up. Give me that, and I'll be happy.  Oh and not Sebastian.  Never Sebastian.

I like this too. And I think of any of the "revealed" (using that term EXTREMELY loosely there) companions, that Dorian could fit that quite well. I think that's his name, the Tevinter Magister anyway. His description made him seem a bit Alistair/Awakening Anders-ish, but with him being a Magister, he probably would have seen a lot of terrible things. Just speculation though, but I hope they make him a complex character. Could be very interesting. Image IPB

the problem with Sebastian

The only problem with Sebastian is the fact that his story isn't finished.

He was built up for future content, developed specifically to continue into an expansion pack that was never released, and as a result his character and his story has been left completely open ended. We don't know how he's going to cope with Elthina's death and develop as a person after she's gone, we don't know how he's going to deal with the Chantry now that Elthina has been murdered, we don't know if he'd be able to retake Starkhaven or not.

Regardless of how I might personally feel about his return, regardless of how much of a slap in the face it might be for people who pursued the chaste marriage, and regardless of how many people might hate him, Sebastian is well within the realm of possibilities for future content in the Dragon Age franchise.

I won't go into the never-ending characteristics and possibilities of Sebastian and his story, because no one wants to suffer my inanely long ramblings and rantings of the ins and outs of his character and possible predictions for his future, but you can't deny that he's got to return in some capacity, regardless of whether we want it or not.

Major NPC. Companion Character. Antagonist. Doesn't matter, Sebastian is relatively vital in the grand scheme of Thedas' political tensions and he is inevitably going to make a return appearance, and I doubt it will be as a random cameo.

...Oh god, I hope it won't be a random cameo.

Oh and not Sebastian. Never Sebastian.

There's a lot to hate about him, but I personally find his conflicted nature compelling and his burning passion to be admirable.... Though he's one heck of a pillock when he wants to be.

Regardless of what I feel for the character(and yes, sometimes it's burning hatred), I think he has the potential to be incredible and I can only hope that he isn't left to wither and die off-screen, it would be a true waste.

there a quite a few companions stories who are far from finished, but i'm not holding my breath for anything more than cameos from all of them as that seems to be the pattern lately, that been said sebastian and leliana were my 2 least favourite companions, but if they do come back i just really hope its not as a companion, a li i could handle, but definatly not a companion, same with most of the old companions i guess, except nate coz we never got to romance him, so he is untouched :(
