While I like it, what relationships would be rivalmance, what would be friendmance?

At first thought, I assumed the healthier one would be friendmancing, but then I remembered that friendship is technically supporting the character's motives and such, and rival, like with Merrill or Anders, can be used to try and move them on a better path. But it's complicated if you use Fenris as an example of rival/friendship romance since both do help him move on.

Or am I overthinking it?

Basically - Someone dashing, charming, a little, tiny bit arrogant and fun on the surface yet deep, complex and astonishingly darker and more jaded the further you progress into the relationship.

I like!

I also support a male LI with black/dark hair!

edit - oops hit submit before done.

also would enjoy:
An older gent, stern and sure of himself, not looking for relationship so it starts out very slowly, chipping away to get to the love.
An over-confident snarky type, yes, kind of an ass. Finds himself in a desperate situation and PC is there for him, brings out his softer side.
A silly goof that makes light of everything and is an all-around nice guy, takes a bit to get beneath the surface.

And yes, I support Gaider romances, they make me squee they make me cry they make me buy!

I'll take all three and have them all voiced by Mr. Emery....what? The man's voice can melt panties.

I TOTALLY AGREE! Posted Image

Me too.... :D
I think this most of the reason why I liked Fenris so much, that voice *sigh* The ultimate sexyness was him voicing Balthier in FFXII, sexy voice, sexy looks.

In DA2 I only play as ManHawke.

To me FemHawke doesn't exist because the VA did a terrible job, IMO, she just sounds like she is perpetually bored whenever she speaks. Which is all the fricking time cos hey shes the main character.

Needless to say I found it impossible to finish the FemHawke playthru..

It was the complete opposite for me, I only played femhawke. I loved her V/A, and loved her voice as my hawke. The Male though.. bleh, nope could not do it.

But I also, agree with Fenris, Fenris is awesome.

what relationships would be rivalmance, what would be friendmance?

It depends entirely on what his personal problems would be I suppose.

If it's personal suffering, like some major physical or emotional trauma occurred, then I imagine the friendship path would push him to accept what happened and move past it, similar to Fenris' friendmance.

While the Rivalry path would cause him to dwell on it, become consumed by it and get angrier by the day. Perhaps he'll end up becoming fixated on the Player, so consumed by his own problems that the PC is the only thing left to distract him from him failings.

Or, if you wanna flip side it. His problem is a "personal loss" of a loved one (family or lover or friend) and he's seeking revenge for their death....

Friendship path would encourage his need for "righteous justice" and the Player would try to help him see vengeance for his loved one's murder. An unhealthy choice, because he becomes borderline obsessive with the entire thing. Nearly killing defenseless civilians because he believed they were the thugs responsible and generally losing his grip on humanity as he tries desperately to avenge his fallen loved one.

Maybe you discover that the entire thing was a huge mistake, an accident that caused the death of his friend/family, and he's faced with the choice of killing the man responsible for it, or walking away. Depending on what choice occurs here, he can either become a stable human being or a broken, twisted man (maybe he even blames the Player for his mistake and ends the romance)

Rivalry path would push him to move past the "Holy Vengeance" shin-dig, because the Player could/would refuse to help him. He'd become generally more mellow as he begun to accept the loss of his loved one, but he'd become angrier towards to the Player because they refused to assist him in the first place and their personalities clash on a regular basis. So while his general out-look on the world might change and his demeanor would become a lot more friendly to the people he interacts with - With the Player, he would much more angry and generally rude.

I dunno, like I said, it depends entirely on what his personal problems are. But there are two examples of how it could work, I guess.

yeah...why only the girl must be attracted by the badass boy? it could be the other way.

I'd like tha Ash Warrior because...well, a character Ash Warrior MUST be some kind of badass with a sense of honor, but not strong as a Qunari.
And I want one in my party from my first play in DA:O. Dog included, of course.

And...I'd like Varric as LI. or a simila character. But Varric would be a bonus. My Hawke tried everythig to have him. with no success. I was quite sad I cuoldn't romance him.
He is one of the few things I liked of DA2. the rest...well, I played the game only one time. Didn't find the will to restart.

Hoping in a return of multiple playable races. that would be interesting in a romance too. Romancing a warrior of noble origins for an Elf must be much more difficult than for a human.

Funny, I tend to only play ladies anyway, but I tried playing Man Hawke, but him being the same guy that voiced Vaughn from City Elf Origin was not helpful to me liking him.

Not his fault,  more my memory being stupidly good when it comes to voce actors (I recognized Stroud and Varric the instant I heard them talk too from DAO characters), and me being insanely attached to my female City Elf origin.

Give me a man who has some twisted ideas about the world due to painful experiences and needs to learn how to trust someone and accept himself for who he is, and I melt like butter on a hot stove. This. Absolutely. Especially if he's trying to "reform." My gods. I cannot express how much I love these types of characters.
So, yes... a female Morrigan. ;) Someone who makes you really think, forces you to be clever if you want to help them feel a new way, think a new way. Someone you can deeply respect as well as romance.
It's like you're pulling information directly from my mind . . .

I really want Nathaniel Howe. No matter how completely unlikely it is. And Carver. I know, I know, weird. But hey--my PC in DA3 won't be related to him at all!
Carver would be AMAZING to have around, especially if he changed for the better. But I don't know if the tension would be there if you're not Mage!Hawke, and there are too many tricky variables for me to believe we have hope of that.

Now, Cullen, on the other hand...

Oh, I don't really expect to see Carver again in a companion capacity, as much as I'd love it. But it'd still be fantastic. I really loved his character in Dragon Age 2. Even when he was an ass. I think he changes more than almost any other character (well, a Warden Carver, anyway).

(^ I'll settle for him too)

For what it's worth, before this thread, I actually had no idea who this was. Seriously. I stared at this picture and thought, "who's that guy?" But he was so ridiculously pretty that I had to look it up, and have since watched about six movies just to figure out what everyone was talking about.

Thank you very much. I now have a new fandom which is taking away hours and hours of study time I should be spending on writing, math, and programming.

But to get back on topic: yes. Gods, yes. If Bioware wanted to make an "evil" romancable character with as much depth as Loki has, I'd be 110% behind that.

I don't know how many people here remember Sand from NWN2. He was a mage- very bitter, very sarcastic, a little abrasive. On paper, he sounds similar to Anders, but he is nothing like him, really. He was difficult, but I found myself wanting to win his approval. This type of romance could be hard to write, since he was a little bit mean sometimes (his heckling of the lute player was hilarious, though). But it would be a nice change from the knight in shining armor.

OMG I LOVE SAND!! He should have been an LI! Sure, he's super arrogant, abrasive and viciously sarcastic (*swoon*) but he's also genuinely talented, intelligent, helpful, loyal, and shows a tender side if you're kind and appreciative of him. (Kind of like Morrigan.)

I agree that Sand is one of those characters that doesn't seem that special on paper (another lawful neutral elven wizard, really? A bitter, sarcastic, arrogant mage, really?), but once you experience the final product in person--see the little twists the writers gave to his character and the life the voice actor breathed into him--he leaves one of the biggest impressions in the game. When he preps you for your trial for murder and you thank him for being your attorney (which he was forced to do under duress from a third party) he sounds surprised but very touched by the player's kindness. I can easily see a lucky girl who can win his heart make it around his barbs.

Whatever we do get, I hope it isn't the usual "Knight in Shining Armor" versus Byronic Hero. They did very well with Alistiair and Zevran in DA:O, but in a way they still followed the usual Paladin versus Rogue archetypes. It seems that BioWare thinks we want either priggish, prudish boy scouts OR mad, bad, dangerous to know hooligans. (And for DA2, they gave us two of the latter.) Some of us like a third option who's neutral but fun and witty (like Varric and Sand).

Well for me I would love Nathaniel but hell we should get new characters as well.

Older gentleman, like Carth Onasi
I also really liked Galyan in DA: DOTS, but really he should only be reserved for Cassandra (but someone like him)

At the risk of being bashed by all the Cullen-fan haters that have popped up lately... I would like Cullen as a romance option. I liked him in origins and I loved his growth in DAII. The way he has matured and grown into himself just attracts me, I suppose.

Other than him, I wouldn't mind someone a bit more roguish. Zevran was fun, but didn't quite hit my roguish bad boy button. I'm not sure if I can think of any example characters at this moment, though. Hmm...

I would also really like someone a touch older? Obvious older than the PC, a bit more world weary, and maybe even a bit bitter? Not angsty, but a guy with a chip on his shoulder that he covers with snark and sarcastic humour. Biting sarcastic humour.

...I have a thing for older men.

I'm getting just a little tired of everyone looking like they're just in their early to mid twenties.

I loved the whole trial, and Sand was so awesome as the attorney! I wish he had been LI too- for me, Casavir was a little too boring, and Bishop was a little too dangerous. Sand was just right. I would have jumped through a lot of hoops to win that elf's approval...*sigh*
