I think that there were downsides and upsides to both being The Warden and Hawke. Why not take the best of both worlds?
The Warden found itself to be to impersonal a lot of time, especially when dealing with characters that were supposed to be close to the player character and know them well. It did do well as a singluar way to address the playrer character in a general sense without feeling like the name is being forced on you.
Hawke was much more personal and probably was better in general, minus the fact that you didn't feel like your own original character to many. The obvious solution is to make more options, but buidget problems would likely make this an issue in actually implementing.
So why not use both? You get to choose between 5-10 last names/nicknames. These names are used in personal situations with companions and such that it would be silly to address a friend not by their name. So, these would be used on a low level in situations it makes sense. In most situations, you'd be refered to as The Inquisitor (as I'm guessing it would be in Inquisition). These would be basically all times where it wouldn't be silly to use it.
The low use of the custom/multiple choice name allows the customization option to be much more managable in price and overall ability to implement for Bioware.
Suggestion: PC called Inquisitor and chosen last name/nickname

Yeah , that would be great. They kinda did that with James in ME 3 (commander/loco/lola).

I don't get what's wrong with just calling the PC "the Inquisitor". It's like "the Warden", it fits who the character is.

Its silly when you are talking to your friends and love interest or they are talking about you. Just imagine if your friends refered to you by your profession title, like The Janitor, The Student, The Professor, The Engineer.redneck nosferatu wrote...

If a person doesn't know you well, it'd actually be much more reasonable for them to call you that.

They'd probably be only a handful of options to keep down variable audio costs.

Which would be reasonable, and a lot better than just one name, no?

I'd rather have a character identified as who they are. A name.redneck nosferatu wrote...

Then again, I would rather not have the character identified as an inquisitor at all. Or be one.

I want them to use the first name, no matter how they do it. I don't care if they set a first name, use voice-reading letters program or something, or give us a selection names. But i want them to use our first name.

The thing is the dialogue. Imagine the time spent having to retake each line with 'x' name. Unless BioWare edits the sound when they say [CHARNAME.] If it doesn't take up much time, then sure. I can go with that.

Hence the using it minimally to make the extra costs and times managable...simfamSP wrote...
