Hawke was fine, even though I hated DA2, I UNDERSTAND why they did it that way, because only a Hawke that was human with that specific background would fit into the story they had centered around him/her.

I think we should distinguish between "fixed "appearance and "fixed" personality. Because while the Spirit monk is less customizable than Hawke, the fact he's voiceless allows for a wider amount of inflections of tone and intent.
Also, after the ridiculous amount of Autodialogue Shepard had in ME3, he should rank much more fixed than he is.
I find the criteria chosen for the "fixedness" inadequate to define what a "fixed character" actually looks. I'd probably have the ranks 4-7 reversed all things considered, as the character is mostly defined through gameplay.
Having said that, either 1-3 (plus Spirit Monk) or 8-10. The awkward middle always felt like a compromise unsatisfactory from both perspectives.

10, I want my character fixed all the way, or else he might get Morrigan pregnant with another monster baby. It's important to get your character fixed to prevent excessive monster breeding.

3 (Warden) hits the sweet spot for me; it gives me freedom to headcanon, has a minimal chance of breaking my immersion and forcing an aspect upon my character which I dislike, but at the same time, it's just fixed enough that the game can actually acknowledge and build upon my backstory (which improves my immersion).
Though I admit that in the case of the warden, much of my enjoyment came from the fact that I could actually choose a backstory (origins).

RPGs in the other end of the scale can work, though for me it becomes a bit of a gamble. If I like the character and can identify with them, it can be awesome with the extra detail and involvement a fixed character can have in their backstory. But on the other hand, a character that I don't mesh with will cause me to pass entirely on an otherwise good game (happened with Geralt).

I like all kinds of RPG. Depending on the expectations I have of the game I'm playing.

jRPG like the FF franchise work with completely fixed characters and I've enjoyed playing them. The reason why I liked playing DAO was that, although the outcome was mostly fixed, there were a lot of choices to be made that led to different outcomes.

BW differentiated itself because of the fact that there were more choices to be made. And this is applicable for DAO. DA2 was lacking in choices due to various reasons. Things that were left out (race choice) more storydriven because of the cinematics that had to be led too in the game etc.

I would like to see as many choices possible for my MC so guess that would mean 1.

I can (and have) worked with 1-8. A fixed characters is fine as a starting point for me. As long as I can make the character my own through events and dialogue.

I'm happy with anything on that scale, as long as the developers are competent and able to execute their intent for the game. If the RP mechanics are all mixed up, conflicting with each other and there is no clear direction what the game is supposed to be, that's when I have a problem.

That's a good way to put it. Agreed. =]

Warden means" having care or custody of some institution; the word is related to guardian"

SO a Warden is a JOB for LIFE... gosh.. breath... can ELVES be wardens?

now and this is whats most important to me: can I be a fixed elf protagonist in DA3? :alien:

If Elves cant be protagonist in DA3 then I want to be Hawke and more importantly She has to be with her Li.

The more choices the better. So #1, but Hawke gave far more flexibility than most people gave him/her credit for. All five of my Hawkes were substantially different, but after the Second Shepard all my ME characters felt roughly the same.

How much I dislike a fixed character depends on how close that character is to someone I'd create. Thus I hate Geralt and find the Witcher unplayable, but identify quite a bit with Ezio from Assassin's Creed 2. Even though the latter isn't considered an RPG. Wheras the nameless hero of Risen 2 was near perfectly someone I'd create if I actually had options in that game. So lack of character creation in that game didn't affect me much.

Actually, I have no idea. I just wanted to be the first person to use that on the new boards.
And if anyone claims to have used it already they are lying.

I have to say I have trouble seeing the Warden and Hawke as LESS fixed than Revan--mostly to do with the auto-dialog, I think. Auto dialog is very defining, I feel, while with Revan it was just his story, not his personality. You controlled what Revan was like, even if you couldn't control all of what happened to him. Not so with Shep and Hawke.

I would place Revan after the Warden (#4), myself. And I'd say that my preference is around that point.

That's a legitimate view, though I would argue that I can customize what my Shep and Hawke look like, as well as their classes. I can also choose Shep's background. Revan's kind of locked in on all of those fronts, which is why I put Hawke and Shep above Revan.

3-6 for me. I liked Shep, so 4 is my favorite. GO FOUR!

I question whether 1 is appropriately placed on the list. A 1-10 scale implies a sort've linearity. #1 is a completely unfixed character(entirely designed by the player) and does not really exist in video game RPGs. To me it seems a bit like using a 1-10 scale for weapons, having #9 be a tank, #1 be a handgun, and #10 is a nuke. Just doesn't mesh well with the rest of the chart imo.

#1 should perhaps instead be a sandbox RPG. That's about as unfixed as video games can possibly achieve. I don't really do sandbox games, but one example I know of is M&B warband. There are probably ones that stick closer to the RPG genre that I'm not aware of though.

Wasn't Revan's personality choices pretty much light side vs darkside though... I don't see how that's much more developed against Paragon/Renegade shep.

Hawke on the other hand has 3 distinct personality options.

Like ME1/2 Shep and even Hawke as i enjoy the voiced protaganist and the sacrifice that my ability to characterise the protaganist has a rough fixed starting framework is acceptable to me.

I like fixed appearances and voices, because they just fit better. And while it's hilarious to go the "evil" route, I find that such an option really hurts story and character logic. Most of the companions would not be helping me incinerate orphans, no matter how much approval I have with them. I prefer the Mass Effect philosophy of being able to make the assumption that Shepard is trying to save the galaxy. If he was just a total bloodthirsty savage, the entire story wouldn't have made sense.

I would say 4 because I like the back story of Shepard. But if they went that route, it would be nice if they delved a bit more into the characters past instead of just a couple worthless script mentions.

Ideally for me either the Bhaalspawn or warden is preferable.

I've played as characters at each point in this continuum and have enjoyed them all, provided the story is strong. However, my favorite games -the ones I keep going back to- are ones in the Warden-Revan range (3-6). My ideal would be a fully voiced Warden-type. Complete customization in regards to race, gender, and appearance but with a dedicated voice actor. Yes, this is resource intensive, but it would make for a brilliant gaming experience.

I really prefer to be able to choose a race or a background of some sort. Both are not necessary but do make for a more enjoyable gaming experience for me so I will say 1-4.

1 - 3 for me.

If DA3 has a preset character like DA2 - one race, one origin, one voice - I'll pass. DA2 was more like a movie with few interactive parts. I want a proper FRPG.
