Being a fan of dnd, I would prefer #1-3. Character's who are between 4 and 9 would not hinder me from trying out the game, though. I loved the Witcher 2, despite not being able to create my own character. So... I guess it depends on the content. :P

I prefer 1-3 on the list for roleplaying.

I've never played a PnP or Final Fantasy game. I've enjoyed games in the 2-9 range, but I prefer the 2-7 range. I like having the ability to choose the character's gender.

My absolute favorite is probably 2-3.

1-3. There are so many rpgs out there that have you playing a preset character. I'm sick of it. I liked that NWN and DA:O let you create mutliple types of characters that changes up the gameplay and story. It makes the game more interesting and gives replay value.

It was hinted at the end of DA2 somehow that the Warden and Hawke teamed up, or at least left separately in pursuit of a similar goal. I would love to see them together (and somehow be able to roleplay as both).

I feel most immersed when it's at about 2-3.

A 1 could never work properly in a game without the story suffering.

Somewhere between the Warden and Shepard from ME2.

2. Bhaalspawn.
3. Warden.

1. would be the best but not likely to happen.

No more than those two anyway.

I've always thought that a full hystero-oophorectomy was best done before 6 months. Around the 3-4 month age.

Appearance, gender, class, personality and politics are really what I expect to have control over in an RPG; religion (or lack thereof) would be nice too, but David did say they didn't really want that so that's that :?. I'm not fussed over the background so long as it doesn't impose on the former (like if my character used to be a templar or something).

Hawke was about as much customization as I want from my charater; more is generally better (and I don't mean choices in the story, this is about controlling who my character is), but Hawke's about where I'm comfortable.

3 - 5. Warden, to Hawk.

I don't want something like Geralt or deux evolution. I want to think about my own character.

I completely disagree with your definition, i never judge a character by what i can change about the character before the game starts.

For me fixed is what happens in the game.
Can i control what my character says and does in the game?
Can my character go to different places in the game or is it linear, if the answers are yes then my character is not fixed.

It does not matter what i can change before the game, even if i can change the whole body of my character has nothing to do with what i call fixed or not fixed.

What I meant, is that when I am playing the commander Shepard, the warden, I am still able to imagine this is my shepard, this is my warden. I have all the information I need.

With Geralt in the witcher 2, this is not my character, this is Geralt. He has his own background, he has his life, his friends, there are many guys he knew I didn't know, many stories with his past I didn't quite understand. I felt I was lost.

He is necessarily cynical, because that's the way he is when I do not want to be cynical. He does not like politics, when I do like politics and want the same for my characters. There are many things that do not depend on me, and it's annoying.

I cannot imagine I am Geralt, I cannot imagine this is my Geralt. It's just Geralt's story tweaked by what I pick in the dialogue and what I choose. It's still roleplaying, but this isn't for me.

5 or 6

Race, family and background can be set in stone, but as long as I can customize the looks, name and pick my class I'm happy.

In fact, I really like seeing my character have some sort of connection to the world in form of parents, siblings and the like.

1-3 for me.

Early Bioware games felt like they were made by two lead designers. The first one created a full game with a fairly linear plot, general idea for the protagonist and fixed ending. Then before release, a second person showed up and completely usurped the first guy's plans, adding a totally alternate path through the game where you could mess up the whole characterisation of the protagonist, act in a totally contrary way to the "intended" plot and cause a diametrically opposed ending.

Over time, this has been reduced to a morality gimmick that has little or no effect on the main story.

Overall, if there isn't a way to play the Inquisitor as acting 100% on the side of the Mages with an ultimate aim of using them as a tool to destroy all Ferelden in an explosion of genuine pandemonium, then the game is lacking storywise.

Somewhere between three and five for me, though I prefer a voiced player character. Unvoiced protagonists only really work in games such as Baldur's Gate, where you don't ever see your character up close anyway.

Edit: to clarify, I love all customization options. The more choice I have, the better. But if it comes at a price (e.g. silent player character), then I'd rather sacrifice some customization.

This was actually intentional. The Bioware Formula from the early days was a linear beginning (15%), a linear ending (10%), and the rest was open, nonlinear middle. That said, I'm not sure what this has to do with how fixed the protagonist is.

Wasn't Revan's personality choices pretty much light side vs darkside though... I don't see how that's much more developed against Paragon/Renegade shep.

Hawke on the other hand has 3 distinct personality options.

I'm not talking about a morality system. I'm talking about his personality.

Little things that motivate him, ways he reacts to certain kinds of people. That kind of thing. Auto dialog limits that.

It would depend on the quality of the writing regarding the character. Ideally around 3-7 seems to be where Bioware stands best. Closer to the Revan mold.

As much choice as possible is preferable - but I'm willing to sacrifice some choices for a fully voiced main protagonist. It's just a complete immersion breaker for me when a game has cinemtaic camera movement, all the characters are fully voiced, and your character just stands there... gawking.

I've enjoyed 1-9. Although I prefer 1-3 area.
