Hacking away until someone is dead is not very cinematic, particularly for a passive combat system like DA.

Therefore, you need two things, things that have already been in past BioWare games.

Kill Moves and Clashing Swordplay

 - Kill Moves -

I want heads to roll, torsos to impale and necks to pierce all animated artfully in special kill animations. Similar to what we had in origins, but more agressively expanded upon.

 - Clashing Swords -

Similar to KOTOR, where lightsaber combat would sometimes result in cool clashing animations, we should have some of this reappear in DA3. I'd love to see occaisional duels between characters and enemies on the field, it would look awesome. Looks better then just *hack away until dead*. Winning these animations could be down to the stats too!

Hell yes. Freaking hell yes. KotOR remains my favorite Bioware gameplay precisely because of the synched combat animations which made it feel like the character was involved in deadly single combat. Sometimes I would purposely avoid using Power Attack/Flurry just so I could continue watching the different gameplay animations.

Maybe, just so long as it doesn't mirror the explosive corpses of DA2, that, if you stabbed them, would literally burst into chunks.

Also, with the Frostbite 2 engine now, I hoped they get rid of the stupidly oversized two handed weapons, which are a complete joke and look terrible. Yeah I know it's fantasy, but it's a massive immersion breaker for a lot of people.

I would welcome the return of kill moves and the addition of synched combat animations.

I liked seeing the kill moves in DA:O, but they were quite few and didn't happen too often. I'd like to see a better range of them in DA3 and happen more frequently.

I don't really care for the kill moves, but syncronized combat animations would be quite nice.

The problem with parries is that, with the way CRPG rulesets seem to work these days, generally people would prefer if their character just kept hitting the enemy rather than trying to defend themselves.

With a pseudo turned based system like KotOR and NWN this isn't an issue, because you don't attack when it's the other guys turn and thus lose nothing, but with the DA system parrys don't really work.

yeah but occaisionally it wouldn't hurt to see a little duel animation play out for matched characters.

same here

The kill moves were quite fun to watch. I really enjoyed the ogre/dragon ones in DAO, it felt triumphant.

I like both of these! It would be cool if your environment put a little cinematic flair into the fights a bit too.

Like if an enemy swung at you and missed, hitting the wall behind you, bits of the wall crumbled. I know Frostbite 2 is capable of some pretty cool destruction effects.
Or if a battle cry or initial clash of metal caused the birds in a nearby tree fly away.
*shrug*

I'd love the clashing swords. I remember loving melee combat on KOTOR because of that. I'm sure that with the tech they currently have they can create more complex moves, too.

It's the little things that make all the difference sometimes. While we might not actively notice them, it makes an impact none-the-less.

How much time they can spend on that, however, takes less priority. We'll see what they produce.

I maintain one of the coolest moments in DAO combat was the first time I stabbed a hurlock in the gut and decapitated him. I was like Oh hell yes!!!!! Lol

I really want to see kill moves return. Your character really should be invincible while it's happening, though.

Have been playing shogun II allot this week and it hit me that the animations in this turn based strategy game is far more realistic than any rpg I've ever played. Choreographed fighting animations and finishing moves with heads and arms flying off, that is what DA:I needs.

In order to make sure killmoves do not disturb the flow of combat and expose the player character (or companions) to the enemy during the animation of the killmove, they should make the killmoves really fast, like, a quick pierce through the heart and then pull the sword out quickly, all this whilst immune to damage.

I'm hoping it'll be like TOR with swords hitting each other and what not. I wonder if the frostbite 2 engine is capable of it though.

Hell yes, exactly. But I also want synched auto-dodge animations as well, basically it can pair a whole series of attacks with a whole series of counters, so you end up with sword dances (and other weapons of course) that are entertaining in and of themselves.

edit:
Also, if you're attacked by two or three enemies at once, or if you have three or five of your party attacking a single enemy at once, those animations should all be synched as well, like the Arkham game counters and the Assassin's Creed flow kills.

*just in case anybody hasn't noticed, I hate the hack until dead no reaction thing like we had in DA2. I want everything synched up and beautiful..  beautifully violent..

That'd be amazing, animations linked with the shield power awesome
