Both games were amazing games. Dragon Age 2 has to be one of the greatest stories told in a game with exceptional writing to boot.

I wanted to actually address this paragraph but I'm pretty certain you're be sarcastic so I won't bother.

DA2's writing was so bad it made my IQ drop by 30.

If I was being sarcastic it would have been obvious.

I stand by my statement. Played that game over 5 times now. Great story, great writing. The characters are a million times better than they were in Origins. No idea what game you are referring to or whether you played the demo and made your decision from that... but it is not the same game I played. And I am not alone in that sentiment.

In any case this thread should be about Ray and Greg, just wanted to make sure you knew I was being far from sarcastic.

I wish Ray and Greg all the best. You brought rich storytelling to a budding medium and you will not be forgotten for that if I have to go and teach a class on it in the future.

Many thanks for the many great games, wonderful memories and good times Ray & Greg. Good luck in future endeavors.

Unlike some of the folks here, I'm not pessimistic as Bioware's still got a really good cadre of developers. I'm surprised the Docs lasted as long as they did in a business this personal, demanding, and brutal. I'd have gone to something more forgiving than we fans - like emergency room medicine.

Really, it is probably just a 5 year clause in their buy out contract that is over. EA announced they bought Bioware in 2007 October, IIRC.

As for retiring from gaming, I bet they had a non-compete in the buy out contract too.

A loss for gaming, and the nail in Bioware's coffin tho. Sad sad day.

I have a question, if I may.

why speculate when you can't confirm this? I mean, is it really constructive to make a rumor and then have a ton of people out there percieve it as a truth, when there is no way to verify it? Even if it is true, how do you prove that?

I don't want to quash your beliefs, i'm just saying though...why even  bring it up at this point?

All the best, Ray and Greg! You'll be missed! Thanks for building a company that created some of my favorite games of all time. I've been involved with BioWare as a moderator since the forums were still based out of the old Interplay. It'll be odd to not have the docs around; end of an era!

You will be sorely missed. Thank you so much for the decades of laughs, tears, pain, and fun that you have created. I have never been more captivated, more inspired, more interested in a single company's output than what you have created at Bioware.

I never met either of you, but I feel as though I did through your creations. I wish the best of luck to you in your endeavors, but wish that you were not leaving.

I've been a huge fan since 1998 with Baldur's Gate 2 and have loved the work you have done. Ray and Greg, thank you so, so much for the wonderful times and memories.

We'll miss you. :(

More EA casualties. These guys were ahead of the company that made some of my favourite games. EA bought Bioware, and its been downhill eversince ME2.

Best of luck to you Drs. and enjoy the retirement, the RPG gaming world will never forget those 2.

Best of luck, Ray and Greg.

And here's to Aaryn and the rest of the BioWare staff who'll have to keep up the good fight. To keep this company from becoming EA Edmonton. (There have been hiccups, but just keep on doing your best. And tell them when you need more time, next time, alright? Two more months on ME3 and it would've shipped perfect instead of unfinished.)

Finally, I love Aaryn's blog being to Canadian standards. Wish I knew french :P .

Well, actually I was responding to the folks speculating that the fans reactions to recent games made them want to quit, and to the people who were saying that EA probably booted them out, etc.  I thought a potential rational explanation that avoids laying blame was constructive.

Sorry you objected, but there was no ill intent, but I still think my admitted speculation was constructive.

Well...something happened. Either the docs got fired or they both got fed up with EA. Looks like part of their severance includes a non-compete clause as they aren't coming back to the industry for atleast a few years.

This is a sad, sad day for Bioware fans! I started playing Bioware games with Shattered Steel and since then I have played every game that Bioware has ever released. I had faith in Bioware games because I believed in the way they developed games with depth, integrity, and great storytelling! I have never been disappointed in any Bioware game. (Yes some of the games may have had a few flaws, but there has never been a perfect game in this industry. ) Because I trusted the Bioware name and its beliefs as a company I have never had any doubts about a new IP or sequel they have created.

I am now in a state of shock as I do not know if I will be able to trust the quality of Bioware games anymore. Yes, Aaryn has stated that the legacy they created will carry on at Bioware, but as a longtime gamer I do have my doubts as I have seen many changes like this in the past where companies end up making lesser quality games, and even closing their doors for good.

I do wish the Doctors all the best in their next endeavors and they will be missed greatly! I also wish Aaryn and the rest of the Bioware team the best of luck in living up to and continuing the legacy of what their predecessors created.

I am very much looking forward to Dragon Age 3 and hope that with the release of the game, Bioware will be able to prove my doubts wrong and that I will always have a reason to tell fellow gamers why Bioware games are some of the best around!

Thanks a lot for the pre-EA era of Bioware. Special thanks for the Mass Effect universe, which for me is as strong as the Star Wars one.

I want to thank Ray & Greg for introducing me to western RPGs. I don't know if I would be this passionate about gaming without Bioware and their great titles. I wish the best of luck in their new pursuits. They'll be missed.

Best of luck to Ray & Greg. Despite what Bioware has become nowadays (thanks to EA), this company created some of the best games ever made (imho) B)

I remember when Greg played support for me on Shattered Steel (where apparently the copy sold here was somewhat corrupted). He was very responsive and spent a lot of time getting my problem solved, and I was so impressed that I bought Baldur's Gate the moment it came out.

Having these guys leave BioWare marks an end of an era (although BioWare of recent years is no longer the company from those days gone by). I wish them a lot of luck with their endeavours. I hope they do things they enjoy and are passionate about and continue to show the care that Greg showed all those years ago when helping a frustrated gamer.

Thanks a lot BioDocs. You and BioWare changed the way I played, and the way I looked at games. This have been twenty marvelous years. I really wish you all the best for your future endeavors.

And here's also a "good luck" shout to BioWare. I hope you can stick to Ray&Greg's ideals in making games, even as part of a big reality as EA (quite frankly, I hope some of BioWare Core Rules kinda "infect" EA).

Ma serannas. Dareth shiral!

While I have my own feelings about the development of Bioware since ea's takeover this is not the place.

Farewell to both of you and thank you for some great games.
I wish you all the best.

Thanks Ray and Greg. Even though I never interacted with you, as you are not present much on the forums, your games have provided me with quality, meaningful entertainment in wonderful worlds. This has enriched my life more than you can imagine and given me an opportunity to escape into these worlds, often when I really needed it.

Can a company survive without its founders ? Yes, it can. A lot what we call a company's spirit are laid in the first year or two. When developers see the bossman himself helping a gamer - and a fan - with a problem in getting a game to work this sort of permeates into the culture. And means that the developers themselves bend over backwards to help people having tyrouble with their games.

Bioware is one of the best, if not the best, supporter of its games. Tech developers are very helpful in the tech forums - if there's a problem they'll ask for a save etc. so that they can look at it. etc. etc.

Somethings just are - Bioware devs. communicating with the fans is a rare sight these days. And why? Because people tend to think that QA guy or gal is responsible for everything in a game - and since this is the internet - every word will be twisted and turned and sometimes taken the wrong way. Was it a mistake to make SW:TOR? Maybe, but sometimes a company - and a person as well. needs to get out of their comfort zone in order to learn. And to move on.

And so the founders have left the building - but the building is left standing. For a long time....

----------------

Edited to add:

Thank you Ray&Greg for all the wondeful times youve given me. From revealing my fate in Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, along the sword coast in Faerun. And for the many adventurers in the Dragon Age universe, from DA:O to Awakenings to DA2. (which I personally felt was great game ;)  )  And thank for the courage to be daring and bold and to include samesex romances in your game as well as moving storytelling forward in videogames. I was chilled to the bone when I first saw the broodmother in DA:O and I was moved by Ohgrens story in Awakenings. I got to know a girl named Morrigan, one fo the better character (e.g. in her writing). I was sort of heartbroken when she was walked through the mirror alone - through the looking glass :)  I haven't had a chance to play Mass Effect 3, but the ending certainly sparked discussion. As always, Bioware listened - and came up with a solution.

Listening to its fans since 1995 is also a great part of the legacy you leave behind at Bioware.

Good luck to both of you :)

I'm still a bit in shock. To say that BioWare had an impact on my life is not a melodramatic phrase, but simply the truth, as one of the driving factors for me to get into game development were the games created by BioWare and by extension, by these two.

To sum up my thoughts: Thank you for the wonderful memories which would not have been possible without your hard work and determination. Thank you for the inspiration. Thank you for years worth of fun and experiences I would not want to miss.

I wish both of them the best in their new projects and while that may be a bit selfish, I hope that their departure from gaming isn't permanent. ;)

I salute you doctors, you will be missed.

Thank you very much for going after your dream all those years ago.
The games Bioware has made and will make are the kinds I love to spend my time with.
I wish you both as good time with your new careers as I will have with the games you inspired.

Kiitos.

Ray & Greg, Greg & Ray,

Thank you for years of excellent games.

Thank you for laughing when I was in the hospital at 16 years of age, and I told you that mech games sucked.  (My dad had coaxed you over to me and you told me about this 'new' studio you had just started and how you had finished Shattered Steel not too long ago.  I was on a lot of morphine, but it brightened the rest of the day I was actually awake for.

Ray, thank you for the free (though slightly indirect) copy of Baldur's gate a few years later.(You had given it to someone at Dr.Smith's office in Leduc, they didn't know what to do with it so they gave it to me.

Thanks for checking out my mangled toe (filling in for Dr.Smith)

I hope you both find success and/or fulfillment in whatever you do.

Ray and Greg. Thanks for the best games, the best interactive stories. I've been a Bioware fan since Baldur's Gate in my college years. I wish the very best to your families and you and may you find great success in all your future endeavors. CHEERS TO THE DOCTORS! THANK YOU!
