Hopefully they aren't cashing out (seeing the direction Bioware has been heading in recently)...

That said, what exactly did they do in recent years (as far as Bioware's projects are concerned)?

Yesterday I would have said they might have been the ones pushing Bioware down the path we've seen them taking the last few years, based on the comments they've made about EA and particularly the 'brilliance' of EA's leadership.

But considering they both resigned at the same time, I almost wonder if they've been running interference these last few years, being good obedient yesmen in public, while providing cover for the studios long enough to get DA2, TOR, and ME3 out the door in as unmolested a form as possible when working with EA.

Exactly what I was thinking. I originally assumed that they gave in to greed when signing a deal with EA, but perhaps they simply had financial woes that made it impossible to stay independant, believing it feasible to keep the "BioWare standard of quality" intact while working under EA.

I was just checking for the latest Mass Effect 3 news and was shocked by the news the Doctors were retiring. I am saddened by this news but wish them well and will miss them, always enjoyed their interviews on Games Trailers and such or unexpected apperances on live feed and other promotional events.

I am sure they left Bioware in good hands and I am looking forward to the release of more dlc for Mass Effect 3 as well as new games to come!

So long, Docs! Going to miss you!

This news makes me really sad. I've been playing Bioware games since the first Baldur's Gate, and have greatly enjoyed the vast majority of their history. I think what Bioware has done with game storytelling, emotional resonance and character development is literally second to none in the industry.

While the doctors may not be the creative leads on individual projects anymore, their stamp was always felt.

I am going to assume that the doctors are completely honest in their statement, and that the decision wasn't brought on by EA, the failure of TOR, or some of the online nonsense over the last years. With that said, I wish them both the very best of luck in their new, and remarkably different, endeavours.

But I'll miss having them in the industry. They did great things here, and I feel like we are just at the thrust of reaching the potential of the medium. It's a shame.

As for Bioware, I hope it's in good hand. I'm excited to try what's next.

so because the docs have left the building all the other biowareworkers have no idea how to make games is what im getting from all the oh bioware is doomed

No, it's the other way around - they left because Bioware is no longer making the games they founded Bioware to make. Well, that's what I'm reading between the lines anyway.

or maybe they just wanted to retire? biowares been around since what 95? i say those guys deserve retirement

thats a long time to hold a position dont ya think?

How many people think this was a forced retirement?

*Raises hand*

Lets take a look at what preceded the retirement announcement. You had controversies surrounding both DA2 and the ending of ME3, and DA2 underperformed. That was then followed up by TOR first failing to meet expectations, and then bleeding suscriptions.

I do think it is rather odd that both retired at the same time.

A new era for the company.

I personally wish them well in their future pursuits.

No flaming please guys...

Makes sense. It's probably why they sold the company to begin with. I don't see any signs of 'forced retirement'.

It's just good business for both of them. Cash out when you can and move on to other things. That said, I wish they hadn't sold the company to EA. They have a long list of developers they've killed and buried. I'd hate to see BioWare added to that list.

After my departure I’m going to be spending significant time with family and friends, as well as pursuing some personal passion-driven projects related to craft beer. The main project I will be working on is a web-based interview show called The Beer Diaries where I interview notable brewers and showcase their beers."

Sounds like fun. Good luck and godspeed Greg & Ray. It's been a helluva ride.

I don't think it was necessarily a forced retirement. It's more likely they just got tired of things. I don't know how much they could've influenced the development of ME3, but the controversy surrounding the ending certainly played some role in their decision to leave the company. Ray Muzyka wrote on the blog that he made the announcement to EA six months ago. Therefore, it was at the time when fans were the most critical of EA/BioWare and ME3.

Why did they choose to announce they were both leaving the company the day after Dragon Age 3 was announced? I don't think it has anything to do with that project, but it certainly doesn't do them any favors.

I think it's the other way around. DA3 and ME3 Omega DLC (+ plans for ME4) were intentionally announced at this time to reassure fans that BioWare can and will continue even without its founders.

Their recent positions had nothing to do with development itself, it was more of "administration and menagement"

The future BioWare games will be absolutely the same with or without them. They were not fundamentally involved into development of the games like for example Mr. Hudson, Mr. Walters or Mr. Weekes.

You ppl need to lay off the conspiracy theories.

Maybe that was the intention, but it doesn't change how people are responding to this news.

As the general manager of BioWare, and senior EA executive, Dr. Ray Muzyka could affect budgets and schedules for BioWare games. I think it has a lot to do with the development itself.

They will be missed dearly. This is like if Gabe Newell left Valve.

Bioware are no longer the same company now that so many of the people that brought us the amazing RPGs we've had over the years have left them, including it's founders. I hope the company remembers the old Bioware spirit and continues to create fantastic RPGs.

Then why was DA2 rushed out the door so soon?

Perhpas it would've been even more rushed if Ray and Greg hadn't in BioWare at that time. You must remember that they were only two. There are many more decision makers in EA.

Bye guys, I hope you enjoy whatever you do next. I'm playing Baldur's Gate in 2012 and I still love every minute of it. :D
