Well, after making RPGs since Baldur's Gate back in 1998, it looks like the good doctors are passing the torch on.
As someone who's been playing (and loving) Bioware games since KotOR I wish them all the best.

Well... that's quite surprising... But I wish them good retirement.

Surely this weakens biowares position within EA.

I have to say I'm a bit resentful of them for all this EA stuff but they were behind some of best games I've ever played and I am truly sorry for them.

Muzyka's Statement

Zeschuk's Statement

Muzyka says decided to retire back in April, about a month after ME3's release.

Zeschuk doesn't name a time he decided to retire, but he does mention the back-and-forth that followed ME3's release.

Both wanna get out of the video game industry on the professional level.

Those are some nice implications for you.

Anywho, best of luck for your future endeavors.

To soften the blow some, Flynn hints at a new IP. Maybe that's for a different thread.

It seems Bioware's got time.

Ray says he decided to retire back in April?
Yep, those repeated Dev comments that their departures from the company were all completely false definitely holds up now! It looks like those 'rumours' stemmed from some truths.

I ****ing knew it:( EA devours all,tis unwise to give it little finger and assume it doesn't eat you whole. How I wish BW hadn't sold themselves to it. Goddamned shame. Bioware used to be so great..and now it has taken just about enough steps to be nothing but an empty name and shell behind which EA does usual EA things.

Imagine how it must feel to leave the company you've founded.
.....Come to think of it they do so with thoroughly filled pockets I'm sure. So perhaps it doesn't feel all that bad! Maybe they can start flying to space with Richard Garriot and partake in similar Game devs-turned-to-billionares-thanks-to-selling-all-they-were-to-EA-and-can.afford-to-focus-on-rich-crazy-people-hobbies - activities now.

I can assure you that leaving a company that you founded and cherished for 17 years is anything but easy...and the fact that they are both leaving at the same time is more than coincidece...the blog entries are just premade shielding device hiding their true feelings...but to be honest ...who wouldn't have loose their interest, love and enthusiasm for games being pushed/forced to do compromises that are not compatible with the initial incentive you entered this business...of course it fades away quickly

You know what, good for them. They lived the dream, made some fantastic games, and got rich. Now they're 40, have families, and probably want to settle down.

Why not?

Sure. They enjoyed their work, sold their company which they started, gave profit to their shareholders and made money themselves. What EA does with BW is none of their concern now, and I would have done the same thing in their position.

I can't imagine just settling down at 40. In fact, I know from experience that just a few weeks of vacation time is enough to make me go a little crazy.

Yep, there's nothing like a good day shouting at a computer screen and pulling one's hair out due to stress over unrealistic deadlines to really balance a person out.

Hope things go well in any of their future i endeavours.

Speaking of that, any ideas who's taking up the torch?

Whoa, thanks for removing my comment there, Stan. I'm actually surprised you didn't flag that one as 'spam' as well. I was pointing out some things that could have very well been the case. It's still a company afterall and of course no founder would want to leave just to go live on dry bread. In any case, the original BioWare is dead now. That will be all, before more of my posts get censored.

I'm sure any mods or devs would deny this immediately, but typically when both the company's founders leave at the same time, it's not really a good sign for it's future. It not even just them. Brent Knowles left Bioware during Dragon Age 2's development. The main writer for Mass Effect left during Mass Effect 3's development. Even Ninja Stanley doesn't work for them any more. There is definitely something going on inside Bioware's doors.

Or--and stay with me on this one--people decide to leave the company because they wish to do other things, and people aren't locked into working for one company forever. Without knowing those people's priorities, wants, or goals, the general public can't really say for certain why a developer would ever leave a studio, so they come up with reasons based on what little they know of how companies and game studios operate.

EDIT: I'm listed as being on the same level of influence as Ray and Greg, or Brent Knowles? Thanks, but I'm nowhere near that imporant, and no one individual will make or break a product. Game development is a collaboration between dozens of visionaries, and the hard work of scores of talented, dedicated professionals.
