The only way I'll buy ME4 is if Shepard is the protagonist again. He did it for me. He made Mass Effect my game. I can't play any other game as religiously without going "Man what could I do on Mass Effect?" No other protagonist has done that for me in all the games I've played, and frankly, SHEPARD IS MASS EFFECT. Plus, Destroy being Canon isn't as bad as people believe. Majority of the playerbase picked Destroy to begin with.

But you went into Mass Effect without knowing who Shepard was.

There is no reason to think that a new hero that you create wouldn't hit you the same way or even greater.

Give the idea a chance.

If they plan a direct sequel set in ME universe then yes it has to be Shep.
If they plan a sequel set far after the events of ME3 then i'm fine with anew protaganist.

Shepard survives in only one ending. I don't think that Bioware is ready to make game in which it will be possible to play as a brand new character or to continue playing with survived Shepard.

It means not only some extra work on making it possible in game, but it means to make much more voice recording. They will never do that.

Only possible role for Shepard in next game - little cameo.

I won't get the new Mass Effect game unless if deals with Shepard(playable) and the choices I made through out the three games. There is a very good chance it won't so , I'm done with the ME series.

They just make destroy (or any ending) canon...problem solved.

Shepard seen his days

As Mass Effect 3 didn't have the whole "Wake Me When You Need Me" and the only Spartan that is actually MIA listed as KIA things like Halo 3 did that made it able for Chief to return

But Shepard on the other hand out of the 4 endings 3 of them he die's

My Shepard is dead. He sacrificed himself for the galaxy.

It's time for a new hero/heroine.

Absolutely not. I'm done with Shepard. His/her story is told. And if they do retcon that horror of an ending to drag Shepard out for another game, it'll be pretty apparent that any concern for storytelling has gone out the window for good.

I remember when people complained that not having consequences in their RPGs was one of Bio's problems.

I'd still like to play as Shepard cause seriously it looks like Shepard pretty much gives up in the ending and goes out in a whimper, even in the EC Shep either commits suicide or finally gets to rest in rubble or possibly dies, because of the lack of space travel to the citadel, but yeah continuing Shep's journey one last time would be fun and a good way to send 'em off for good, with a proper Hero's send off or something(My opinion and not likely i know, but one can dream/hope).

I guess this is why I want Shep back. His/her death in 3 was just to ... empty. If S/he had died in a more meaningfull way I would say bring in a new hero. It just feels like Sheps story is not over yet. (exspecialy with that destroy ending)

This has to be a next gen game I think. Atleast I hope it is. The next Xbox will be out by 2014 at the latest. If Bioware releases a new Mass Effect on the current gen, it will look and feel extremely dated by the time it releases.

If they want to give ME a fresh start, release it on the next gen consoles.

To answer the OP question: I'd probably prefer it if they left Shepard's story as it is....but if they brought back most of the squadmates, for one last hoorah, well, I'd be down to play the Commander one more time

nah shepard s story is done now its time to move on, he was born to do something about the reapers that was it i don't want to see him in another game. would ruin the point of the previous trilogy really which was supposed to be his only story that's playable in the franchise.

Yes, but I also didn't have high expectations for it since I was more conjoined to the FPS revolution. Until I got rigorously attached to Shepard and everything around him (LI especially). No other protagonist in this series or in any other series will do that for me.

If they don't bring Shepard back, I'd like it if we could choose what species our character is, and then customize the facial features and skin color.

In fact, that's exactly what they should do in the next game

Shepard was based upon ancient gaming technologies now and had to continue to build and update upon a character creator from 2007.

The new character creator will blow the lid off of the one we've had to deal with the past games, I'm certain of that, since it's more than obvious this new game will be made for the next gen of consoles (one year away).

Once you do that, and have some great voice acting, you have a character who can be superior to the Shepard series of games.

Not me, I hope we get something completely different like somebody not belonging to the alliance or any other government faction - living in the Terminus systems perhaps even a smuggler or bounty hunter or some other.

This should be the chance to enlarge the universe rather than just repeating whats already been made.
