This will go against the core element of the Mass Effect universe - that is the choices and consequences feature.
If we go on the prequel, or pre-Shepard route, then what would be the point of the established universe that the players shaped in the first 3 games?
Now that those are out of the way, I'd really like to see an aftermath of ME3 (the minute after reapers are dealt with) as the introduction of ME4 - fate of Shepard, his romance, and the species.
After that, you can do anything really. Just don't fast forward too much from the ME3 timeline and I'm good.

If they do decide to do a distant future sequel, I feel that the best change they could make is making ships capable of traveling great distances on their own. This would relegate the Mass Relays to relics of bygone era, whilst actually opening up the galaxy to the same spirit of wonder and exploration that it had in ME1.

I can't help but think that Casey Hudson and the writers have really written themselves into a corner. You can't really do a prequel any earlier then the first contact war, because that would leave you telling a story either exclusively about humans or exclusively about aliens (barring some lame 'lost in space' story). On the other hand, the 'choices' of ME3 inexorably alter the nature of the mass effect universe, so it will be very difficult to create a sequel without either canonizing one of the endings or going so far into the future that the ME universe and its technology are barely recognizable. If I didn't hate reboots so much, that might be what I would suggest!

This is why i favor a tabula rasa
Keep the races, the setting, the locations, and just start over. Let the Mass Effect trilogy be the Mass Effect trilogy, and start a completely new story for next time, where none of the ME events took place.

Let's have our new protagonist scouting for new colonies during reconstruction post-ME3. Would not need to be far into the future. And of course, when you are poking around unexplored parts of the galaxy, things can get dangerous fast. Uncover new threats along the way that should have been left untouched... Reapers aren't, and should never have been, the only threat in the galaxy.
And perhaps, the races of the galaxy themselves are their own worst enemies, as competition for greatly-reduced resources along with cultural conflicts increase the risk of all-out war. All the while, you're looking for new colonies, so that everyone can survive and hopefully live in peace.

Setting: The leaders of all the major races create a secret organization that is dedicated to executing a "Plan B" - to ensure the survival of the various (major) species. The protagonist will have to travel through a recently discovered Relay that leads to another Galaxy. Your objective will be to explore, report and look for locations to colonize. You get to choose the race you want to play as and head out with a team, handpicked by your superiors.
Pros: Exploration, meeting new alien races, discovering new planets and tech, potentially interesting choices ahead, getting a fresh shot at saving inhabitants of the Milky Way.
Cons: none

First off, I will try to avoid putting any spoilers in here..if there are any I missed, flag me immediately (I am assuming they pick an ending for us and roll with it)! If this idea has already been talked about in these forums...I didn't have time to read all the pages. The main story came out of my brain, but ideas for playing as other species I stole from somewhere.
I have no desire in playing a prequel since everything has already been hashed out - we know how all the historical wars play out, so there would be no huge twists to blow my mind. I don't think I'd buy a prequel..and with that said, here's my idea. (or, perhaps make the historical wars an FPS franchise since COD players don't really care as long as they get to shoot stuff).
Title: Mass Effect: Hunting Darkness (or something more creative)
What to put on the back of the case: "Fifty years after the battle with the reapers, the galaxy is still in chaos. Trying to rebuild on top of the rubble, each civilization is struggling to "put back the pieces" on their respective homeworlds. As a result, the bonds that united all species against the reapers have begun to break as each civilization fights for their own progress.
However, amidst the rubble, something far more sinister is occurring. First, it was Haestrom whose star began burning out prematurely. Now, several other solar systems are beginning to dim.
The "dark energy" discovered by Tali'Zorah and the Quarians seems to be increasing, and an intergalactic task force spearheaded by Dr. Liara T'Soni (or not, some may love this, others hate it..I am indifferent towards liara) has assigned you, Dr. (named after a Reaper war hero not mentioned in ME: 3), the most highly renowned solar scientist in the galaxy with figuring out why this is happening.
As you embark on your quest to explore these dying star systems, you find clues that suggest this dark energy is much more than just a natural phenomenon. As you piece together the puzzle, you begin to suspect this galaxy is still in grave danger.
Since everyone is still rebuilding from the Reaper invasion, it is up to you and your team to stop this new threat before it emerges and wreaks havoc on a still-hurting galaxy."
Character choices (the reason I suggest a war hero name..it'd be silly to have an alien named "Hakett" or "anderson" without some justification): - Asari: play as a powerful biotic who has devoted her life to planetary studies- Turian: Regarded by most Turians as an outcast due to his distaste for "soldier life", this character has devoted his life to academia, but can still hold his own with a pistol- Human: Probably would be the default "soldier" with potential for ability in any specialization school.- Salarian: A tech genius from the blood line of Mordin Solus. This character is regarded as the smartest salarian alive and can hack through anything. He has also spent time reasearching solar flares in hopes of harnessing the power they give off.- Quarian: (Probably not, the ME team didn't seem to like the quarians much, and I think it'd be tough to make one the main character)* There would be obvious flexibility in class choice. You could be a salarian biotic, but perhaps with fewer biotic powers and more technical prowess than the asari.
Game Play: - The combat system of ME: 3 was fun and I wouldn't be opposed to something similar.- PLEASE return to your roots. ME: 3 had such linear conversations with crew mates (for example, conversation with Tali on the Normandy's bar when she's having a drink)..give us options of what we want to say again!
- Grammar lesson, please. Half of the crew in ME: 3 seemed physically unable to speak in complete sentences (ie: Ashley, every time you talk to her)
Wants:- Cameo appearance from any surviving crew members from the trilogy, especially the love interests chosen by everyone who has played the trilogy (
For the past 50 years, this ancient species has been harvesting as much energy as possible from the stars, reproducing, training, and arming themselves to retake their rightful place in the galaxy: the top of the food chain. With superior weaponry and a stable economy, this "super race" is a real threat to a galaxy in pain.

After Effect.
I know, pretty bad, but I have a feeling it could be used somewhere, possibly DLC, I don't know.

1. I like scanning each planet and finding missions.
2. Firewalker mission are fun.
3. Nice to have 12 crew members to choose from and to get there loyalty.
I saw a post that the new mass effect is coming along and the it will be for PC. Woot.

Hi all - First post here on the forums. I just finished ME: 3 a couple days ago and still have lingering issues about the way it ends...hopefully hashing out my idea for the next game will give me some comfort and get others excited

Wants:- Cameo appearance from any surviving crew members from the trilogy, especially the love interests chosen by everyone who has played the trilogy (Tali). This would be minor, they wouldn't be part of your crew, but perhaps give you a quest or 2 to increase your power (complete Tali's quests to gain energy drain as an ability, or something)..this would give some motivation to play through the trilogy first and save as many as you can)- Closure from ME: 3 (could the ending have been any more of a tease?) I feel strongly about this, but can't say much because, spoilers. - this could be done via conversations, or video logs found throughout the first few missions. Storyline premise:(Could be done with Protheans but I prefer what's not in parenthesis) Several cycles ago, an advanced species safeguarded themselves from extinction by creating a large cryo-preservation facility several miles below the crust of (Planet X). Before the rest of their civilization was wiped out, they created a means to harness solar energy from Haestrom's star to keep the facility running. As the star began to fade, so did their hope of returning.Their last chance at returning was if this cycle could build and activate the crucible (which they designed) before their energy source died. Once activated, the Crucible connected them to several other stars, powering up their facility and taking them out of cryo-sleep (to write themselves out of a corner, Bioware could say they had designed in a fail-safe to automatically override Shepard's decision, if he made the one Bioware didn't want..it would ****** people off, but also get everyone on the same page for the next game).
I really hope they give us the change to play as a Quarian.
I love Tali i hope to see her in all the new Mass effect games.

Maybe a new galaxy, or at least one or two new planets.
You are the leader of an expedition team, investigating this new galaxy/cluster, and the human council member is curious about your ideas of these species. Your choices can decide which species are peaceful with the Milky Way/citadel, which are outlawed, and maybe choices from me3 can decide which species get a spot on the council (if Wrex or another Urdnot is a Krogan council membe rot could bring their story to a nice close from me1, assuming they were peaceful in your playthrough, and if they weren't maybe they are just not on the council)
Squadmates can be made from favorite species (Krogans, Vorcha, Drell, Since this is a few hundred years in the future maybe a suitless Quarian) as well as some of the new species that you are able to make peace with, if any (party members that depend on your choices)
