If the new Mass Effect game is set before Shepard & Co. there might some restrictions to what exactly is possible:

  • The Military Alliance wasn't formed until 2160 which means, anything regarding an Alliance Officer would fall flat here.

  • Setting the story during the First Contact War would be rather difficult because any alliance with any of the other alien species would not be possible unless you create an alien PC . Besides the fact that Turians are super awesome, and I doubt any Mass Effect would appreciate having to face them as enemies when playing a human PC.

  • Biotic implants weren't developed until 2163 so any human PC could not be a biotic.

IF the game focused on PC with a different species or rather, providing the opportunity to choose from a few different species including humans, I can imagine it to be difficult to stear the game in the direction of a storyline that is at least in the end the same for each species. Personally, i would love this. A PC with a different "Origin" like they did with DA:O would be great though I can't imagine how that could work pre-ME1.

I think someone posted about "the way of the hero" which I personally don't mind. I have a hard time thinking of any RPG that doesn't provide a classic way of the hero scenario but maybe I'm not thinking about it hard enough.

Like it has already been suggested here, I'd love a similar-to-DA:O beginning of the game. It is what makes DA:O so replay worthy to me because I get to experience the game from a different angle each time. I guess here it depends on what BW is wanting to do: Do they want to cater to players who focus more on FPS-style-combat than RPG or the other way around. But for example the chance to play either as Asari, Human, Turian or Salarian would be super awesome. And companions of course. Companions make it fun. Personally, i would love if the focus of the game was the RPG aspect in every meaning of the term. The higher the number of hours I can play the game before finishing it once, the better.

Personally, I would also prefer if the game was set after the events in ME3. The later the better, and just hints at what once was. Kind of like with Revan in KOTOR and later on in SWTOR. Or Satele Shan hinting at descendants of Revan and Bastila. Stuff like that.

Maybe make the main storyline focus on a political intrigue that threatens the existance of the Council and its members as well as their peoples. Or make the PC and their companions hunt for an unknown killer who is the only proof of the intrigue. Make it twisted with many big revelations that change the player's mind about how they have perceived certain things. I would play the hell out of such a game.

I'd just like to see a sequel, not a prequel. I'm fine w/ a "new" Shepard, meaning I'm ok w/ there being a whole new character to follow in the new game. I'm fine w/ bleedover of current factions in the MP, but for the SP I'd like to see a new story line, even if it draws from the original, or even if it has some of the same characters, like if Liara made an appearance, I wouldn't be sad. I do think there should be a clean break though, the new one should be it's own, clearly-defined game. Influence and history from old games I am fine w/, but I'd like a new story for this game. Also, I wouldn't mind being able to play as other characters this next game, or @ least having the option. Shepard was phenomenal but after playing through a few times, maybe being Grunt wouldn't have been so bad the next few times out. Or Garrus.

Having said that, not going to lie, I'll spend WAY more time in MP than I will in SP, so I'd love it if you guys would fix the issues in MP and improve it.

For me it doesnt matter, im done with ME after the whole charade with ME3:s terrible ending.

To be honest a total remake of ME3 is needed

you're here two years after ME3 came out. I highly doubt you are "done with ME", otherwise you'd have moved on by now

Would love to have a different playable species in single player. Shepard was an excellent playable human character so if you're leaving that behind with the next Mass Effect game then surely if you really wanted to branch out then give us a Krogan rampaging across the galaxy   Or a ninja Drell

The ME universe post ME3 one where the choices I make will be able to shape the future ahead of my character. Please don't make a prequel where we already know what is to be in the grand scheme.

Posibly 30 or 40 years later, the many races of the galaxy have rebuilt what has been destroyed and moved on with life, life made possible to still exist through the sacrifices of the Shepard. Let the posibility's be endless not bound by the events to follow of which a prequel is bound.

I just want to be able to choose my powers. Snap Freeze and Annihilation Field were such brilliant powers in multiplayer. I'd really love to be able to use them again.

I don't care when the story is set. A prequel would be an amazing game, but would lose the freedom of choice that ME1 and ME2 had. Maybe as a spin-off later down the line... A sequel would have to know when to cut the line in terms of referencing the previous games and being a new story.

---

Also: More Turians and Krogans.

For the most part the writing for ME is great (I'm not including the ending of ME 3 in that comment), but not quite in the class of L.A. Noire and (Telltale's) The Walking Dead of the games I've played. And I understand that you cannot make an RPG's story tree too complicated but sometime I felt the dialogue options a bit limited and unreal (not to forget the same dialogue for different dialogue options). The three that most come to mind is the interactions in ME 2 with the three Quarians on their pilgrimages that are down on their luck and their inconstancies.

Kenn on Omega - Kenn wants to get off Omega and Shepard can help him out a number of ways (Omega: Struggling Quarian) and give Kenn 1000 credits to buy passage of Omega. But I'm sitting there thinking I've got a ship why can't I give him a lift or job on the crew.

Indentured Quarian - (Illium: Indentured Service) Now I had no problem with this interaction, I'm only using this one as a reference. At one point of the dialogue Shepard offers to buy the contract (like he could afford it?).

Accused Quarian on Citadel - (Citadel: Crime in Progress) During Shepard's interaction with the Quarian she tells Shepard that she is living rough (homeless) and she likes to hang out at the used spaceship dealers and dream of buying a ship to take back to the Fleet. At the end of that interaction Shepard asks if she will be OK and she says yes I can get food at the Turian shelter. And that was it! No offer of money like Kenn or the indentured Quarian? And once again I'm sitting there thinking I've got a ship I could give her a job, really that was worthy of an Assignment to help her get a ship or at least it would p*ss of the Illusive Man giving a Quarian a job.

Some would say I'm being picky and some of us could fill a whole thread on how at different times the stories felt a bit wanting. But all I am really asking is for is a little bit more thought into some on the choices or lack of them in the story.

Multiple POV's in a story is what would keep attention. A lot of people want to play a different species, argue about genders and romance arcs... But I'd really want to be able to switch from a character to another, two might just be enough, and experience the story from different angles, with different options in respect to the chosen personality.

It would still be single player, of course. And it would make romances really interesting.

kind of like Dragon Age Origins: you start off as human soldier or human citizen; turian officer or turian rebel; asari in maiden stage working for some weird informationi broker or are in initiation of becoming a asari commando member; you get the idea. Each one starting off in a different location following a different intro storyline before starting the major storyline that is similar for all "Origins" kind of like in Origins. I really, really would love that. Experiencing the Origin for myself instead of just reading about a background I picked made all the difference for me in the game.

sure this has already been said. but defiantly the chance to play as a different race other than human both female or male.

maybe playthro the first contact war (humans and turians), the genophage creation/before the genophage (salaries and krogan), when the geth were made and started to rebel (quarians and beth), when the asari first discovered the citadel - the things they found and when they met the keepers (asari), as a protean during the final days of their war against the reapers…you know all those other things we learned about in mass effect 1, 2 and 3. altho it is a lot of stuff and would probally be difficult. not to mention that some of these times, not all the races know about each other. so yeah…but that would be so cool. hmmm perhaps the time period when all the races have discovered each other and are learning how to deal with one another and putting the galaxy's society all together. everyone moving to the citadel and what not. that would be interesting.

I think it should be taken back what i mean is we should go back in time, before mass effect 1 even find out more about the creaters and how they came about ?,

Or even more in depth on the prothiens and there wars and how they were living etc,, things they had to overcome and battles\ wars that they had ?

Even if we went back in time there weapons would still be far advanced than uptodate ones, and there ships and resources needs ,

This way new characters and storylines can be created in my personal opinion and we can start the whole sarga over again EPIC!!!.

Well  I am up for any Mass Effect style game... as long it has nothing to do with Shepard or the Reapers.  I honestly prefer a complete remake of Mass Effect 3, but seeing that won't happren.

I'll be fine with a prequel providing it has nothing to do with the Reapers,  Shepard. and the  conclusion of the trilogy. I think it is best no one remembers such travesty.

Don't try to do a  galactic threat in the vein  of the Reapers you guys have already shown you couldn't pull it off. I prefer the plot would be more local like L.A. Nore in the Citadel\Omega . You guys obviously excel at character development.... the obvious exception is TIM and his boy toy Kai Leng.  Oh and uh.... Harbinger....  he had like no character develop at all... It's like he was replace by a insipid god child or something.

If the game has multiplayer do not have it affect the campaign, I rather the game to either be fully multiplayer or single player.  Don't do both please. I don't want resources divided between the two..

Also please do not have Mac as the lead writer for the next game, get some one more compentant like Drew or\and Patrick. If you have to have him do something make him a character writer he did an excellent job on Garrus and Wrex in ME1.

I do want to explore more of the Alien Species in the Milky Way. I want to see the Salarian society  on their home planet. I want to visit the Turian Military Academy on Palaven. and I would love to visit Thessia to explore than just um... their anatomy.  It'll be awesome we can do this by playing different races this time around. I would love to play as a Krogan. Mercenary getting caught up some local planet politics influencing some high profile Salarian to give either a postive or negative opinion back to the Salarian Councilor on the Citadel.

Please no First Person spinoffs of Mass Effect. The market is already saturated with FPS games and I am terrible with them.

Oh and if our protagonist in this new story gets a ship and there is space combat let us duke it out for a change. whether it'll be X-Wing style combat or Star Trek  Space Naval  Warfare Enterprise style( I prefer the USS Defiant actually)

Did I mention I want to be  Krogan? Well I'll be okay with just the Council Races if it'll be easier on you guys.

And if I see the milky way influence by either the green or blue light at the end of ME3... I won't  be picking up the next game.  I can barely tolerate red light as it is.

It's a big galaxy and according to the Mass Effect codex, only 1% has been charted.  That's a lot of space for some exploration in the new series.  Hopefully Bioware gets back to what worked in ME1 and ME2.  More: visiting new and cool planets, cities and characters  Less: Fetch quests on the same four floors of the Citadel

I think the only way to do this in an enjoyable fashion is in a post Reaper galaxy.   The only way the Reapers are gone is by making the Destroy ending canon.

Update: Also I think the curveballs and decisions of ME2 were what made it so great and so replayable.  Didn't upgrade your ship armor?  Somebody dies.  Picked Miranda in the Jack/Miranda tiff? Jack dies.  Wait to hit the collector base; your crew is gonzo.   Your decisions had consequences.   The decisions of ME1 never paid off as promised in ME3.  The only storyline that had consequences was the genophage cure.  You could definitely tell this part of the game was done first and was the most complete.  Even the textures and shading on Surkesh seemed better than the rest of the game.  And I love the fact that you do the best by killing Wrex in ME1 and sabotaging the cure!  Now that's a curveball!

Sequel please, with the opportunity to explore and find un-activated relays. The new threat to galactic civilization could be a war-like species that has conquered a portion of the galaxy that none of the Citadel races have been to. Or even a relay (or some other method) that accesses another galaxy? More planetary exploration (boots on the ground game play). I actually prefer the Mako to the Hammerhead. The ability to holster your weapon. Make it so that you can choose your armor type before a mission as well as your weapon. Real environmental suits and helmets for team mates instead of breath masks and bare skin. More neutral dialog options for role playing.

If there is to be multi-player, make sure it doesn't impact the single player experience. I do not, and never will, desire to play multi-player.

The only Way i can see a prequel Is if it was on a Mobile platform. But still conjoined with the new Mass effect game Sorta like with ME:Inflitrator and ME3. That would be Interesting but I honestly cannot see a Fullon Platformer that is for the Xbox or Playstation Consoles. It would be too much of a Let down on something like that to be wasted with Such good technology. But if anything, For the sequel it would have to be around the time the Kid and the Stargazer where talking at the end of me3. because they already have confirmed that Shepards Squadmates wont be in the next game. So we are talking about a 1000-1500 year jump. So it will be A long time for things to change and the like. Hell it could even be in another Galaxy for all we know.

Ok, first off, I know there will be people on here that will get butt-hurt for my comments...So here we go.

I know there are more people out there than the very vocal ones that only picked the destroy ending. I personally pick the Synthetic/green ending.

Now, that is out of the way. How's about a mix between a FPS and the ORIGINAL RPG ELEMENTS from the FIRST MASS EFFECT game for a basic layout. I am also partial to being able to switch from First and Third person at will as well. Have the game(s) set after ME3 maybe a year or 2 later with an ENTIRELY new roster. Say, being able to choose your race from Asari, Quarian, Krogan, Turian, Salarian, Geth, Volus, Elcor, Hanar or Human and earn your way on to become a Spectre for the Council. Each starting species starts out differently. Climbs up through the ranks until you gain the Council's attention by doing something worthy of gaining a Spectre's attention. ALA: Dragon Age:Origins.

During the entire game, there could be drop in/drop out co-op or you can play the entire game single player. Example: A friend joins your game, enemies get smarter, more health and shields, and start to use more tougher tactics. If 4 friends join your game, Imagine a difficulty around 4 or 5 levels harder than Platinum from ME3's multiplayer. But you should also be able to set it up so your can only have friends, no-one, or even complete randoms join at ANY TIME.

I am not forgetting the INCREDIBLE characters from the first 3 games. Maybe have them make cameos, or let them provide you with a mission or 2 that they need done. Like Tali'Zorah Vas Normandy sending you out in the field to collect research on dark energy from a planet which has maybe, some Blue Suns, which you have to fight through. I know, not the best example, but still.

What would be even better, would be to let the game read your gamesave that you have carried over from ME1-3 so it can know which crewmates you have alive or not.

Also, would it be too difficult to have your character be able to do a new game plus, like ME1-3, but only on the next harder difficulty so you can't play the same character over and over again on the easiest difficulty, so there is always a challenge.

Let's even have the cinematics and gameplay perfectly blended together. Or even interactive cinematics.

It is always good breeders seek ideas from fans, but as the Mass Effect universe is so rich with so many possibilities and I trust BioWare to create another excellent game.

Even Shepard not being the protagonist and hero, I hope BioWare does not discard everything that was done in 3 games in the series
As in Star Wars that even in today's films have always respected authors Lore of events  :D

I may be one of the minority here.I want the new game to be more like ME1. The futuristic atmosphere and the alien ambience. And of course the soundtrack.

Seriously, I don't understand why exploration could be totally absent in ME3. The exploration part really adds so much to the overall game setting. If people want to explore and do sidequests, let them. If players want to jump right into the main missions, let them. No one forces you to explore uncharted planets and the driving is quite easy in the main missions. But don't tell me the galaxy's at stake so there's no time for side-tracking. I call it BS. So nothing was at stake in ME1 and ME2?

Deus Ex Human Revolution has done a great job balancing everything. I think the developers could really refer to some of its mechanisms. I'm not a game developer and I know very little about how to make a good game, but I've been a gamer all my life. I'm into pretty much any games so I know what's a good RPG and what's not.

I'd prefer a sequel. I have to question myself though. What could be worse than a race of super intelligent ultimately powerful organic destroying machines bent on "cleansing" the entire galaxy every 50,000 years? Reapers are in my top 3 list for most undefeatable bad guys list. What enemy can possibly be worse? A species of sentient beings from a different galaxy not part of our own maybe? I dont know I'm sure bioware already has something mind blowing planned.

No more Paragon/Renegade. Keep the ME3 influence meter but make decisions left/right decisions and not top/bottom decisions. That way, it won't be tempting to always choose up or choose down without thinking.

How about native controller support on PC (especially since the consoles are now x86 based).  Some of us game from the couch and are looking for a more ergonomic solution.  It's not hard to develop tendonitis with too much keyboard and mouse and the option to use something else (natively - xpadder is good but not as perfect as Witcher or Skyrim's native controller support) is helpful.  Shouldn't be an engine problem either going forward since the Frostbite engine already has PC games with native controller support.

I just hope that the future game has a good number of references to the trilogy. Either in monuments/memorials, in dialogue (both main and NPC conversations), or even seeing a few of the crew members (like Liara, Grunt, and Wrex since their species live the longest)

I would really like something like DA:O where you choose your species and class and have a story with an origin based on that. Or maybe something set in the days of First Contact where you can play as a human or a turian. Or a story based on Anderson instead of Shepard. I've got a lot of concepts. Morning War, something after the Reaper War, anything before First Contact where you play as the aliens. I just don't want it focused on Shep anymore (as much as I love Shep)
