There is much to explore in the Mass Effect universe. Shepard's story was great, but it has been told, and because of the scope of that story, anything post-Shepard would be very challenging to write. It would likely be best to leave Shepard as is/will be (post-DLC).
Many of the historic events in the galaxy (First Contact War, Rachni Wars, Krogan Rebellions etc.) would provide a great setting for creating conflict, the driving force of any story, without requiring the game to be a 'prequel' per se. Another option, and probably the more interesting one, is a story that parallels Shepard's leading up to and during the events of ME1-3. This could allow for some horizontal continuity if save games were imported (for instance hearing a report of Sovereign's attack and the fate of the council), something that would validate a player's prior experiences in the ME universe.
As far as game ideas, there are many options, but I think playing a non-human Spectre in a shadowy 'intrigue and espionage' setting would allow for deeper exploration of the universe, and would allow for TONS of interesting plot lines. It could be lots of fun to both write and to play. For example, for a spectre who answers to the council, even just the repercussions of Shepard's decision regarding the Destiny Ascension would be fascinating to explore.
That's my two cents. There is much to explore in the ME universe beyond Shepard.

Successful Refusal

Then go Leviathan huntin'

I can get behind this.

You know what?... I'm nearly 100% sure that the next Mass Effect game will have the Leviathans as antagonists, so you'll probably be satisified.

I just wish there was a little bit more depth to it though. I don't want just another replacement for the Reapers.

BTW: From a storytelling standpoint I have one little suggestion: no more suicides (attempts). I have never understood why it should be my goal to talk someone into suicide and I also don't understand why so many characters would attempt suicide. Saren, TIM, Samara, Tali, Kelly to name the ones that come to my mind that didn't make any sense or at least not in this frequency.

I mean really? Our two main humanoid antagonists commit suicide if you talk them into it? Enough of that!

Hello, chem light.  Should have read this before I went and started a thread with this idea.  My bad.

You know what I would play?  A biotic combat game that integrates kinect.

I was just playing that new Avengers kinect game and was frustrated at how slowly it was responding, it could only register half of my punches and kicks.  Then when I slowed myself down (and the game caught up), I realized the movements felt more like bending from Avatar or.....the mnemonic movements for biotics from Mass Effect.

lol...Casey wants our ideas...lol.  The irony of that statement is outstandingly hilarious.....

Yeah they said stuff like that before, and look what happened. All that "It's the players' game as much as ours" rhetoric was just a PR spin and nothing more. And here we go again...another PR spin right out of the gate. The new Mass Effect will just me more of the same I'll wager....a Sci-Fi story that starts out fresh and interesting and ends as nothing more than something banal and unoriginal that's been way overdone in the Sci-Fi genre....basically a plot that starts with a bang and ends with a whimper.

They should just continue making it into Call fo Duty with a Sci-Fi skin stapled on and call it good. They'll make plenty of money from it and folks won't feel misled.

What if they picked up and ran with the dropped plotline from ME2 with Haestroms sun for a sequel? (Dunno if anyone suggested this, there's so many pages to read through)

I personally would love the option to pick my race like you did in DA:O, but if not then whatevs
Although getting to be a quarian on pilgrimage or a Krogan during his rite of passage sounds pretty BA to me.

Also the inclusion of space combat might be kinda cool. Customizing one's ship and weaponry and what not. Maybe have quests to choose people for various positions on the ship separate from your ground combat squad mates? I think hunting for a pilot/doctor/tactical officer and the like might be interesting

I don't know if I've posted it already, but I'd like a game like "Alpha Protocol in the ME universe", set in Citadel Space or any of the adjacent settled areas in the late 2160s or early 2170s.

If there would be Miranda as the protagonist I'd be in heaven.

Pull a Dragon Age Origins and allow us to be something that is not just human. I want to have the option of being Turian, Asari, Krogan, etc, and have an amazing story for my guy to explore and mold into my own. Just don't make it too grand that we have to play the game online only. No Star Wars the Old Republic and no cut and paste gameplay and model design for the sake of voice work. That is what killed SWTOR to me. Try to keep it single player. If you do decide it's too grand and you have to have an online interaction with other players, then

KEEP MASS EFFECT 1, 2, AND 3 COMPLETLY SEPERATE FROM FROM THE NEXT GAME/TRILOGY. LEAVE THE STORY OF SHEPARD OUT. IT IS TIME FOR SOMETHING NEW!

IF MMO, DO NOT CHARGE A #$%@ING ONLINE FEE TO PLAY THE DAMN THING
. LEAVE IT TO PAY FOR EXPANSION FORMAT WITH FREE PATCH AND CURRENT GAME STATE UPDATES LIKE YOU HAVE BEEN WITH MASS EFFECT 3.

that is all I hope for. Serioulsy, I want the saga of my commander Shepard to be done. Move on, use those beautiful game developer heads of yours and make something new and special.

I would echo others, in that Mass Effect 3 ending ruined the enjoyment of all the Mass Effect games for me. Unless it's a total rewrite of the ME3 ending, then the Mass Effect universe remains tainted with god-child. Like many, I invested myself in the series and find the willingness to listen to be piffle, given the artistic integrity" claims of earlier this year. My two pence.

If you want a new story, make up for something after ME3 events, new chars, new plotlines. Leviathans could be one choice, dark matter another, new danger from other galaxy could make it. Anything but a prequel or paralell story. After all we already know how things end no matter what we do in prequels and spinoffs. Need freshness.

no thing would be nice, would to be able to start off as a different race like in DA:O
maybe 100 years after ME 3, with solving conflicts between known and an unknown race.

Well, where should i start from?

First off all, i would not like to see a new Mass Effect game settled after mass effect 3. There has been too many bad feelings about the endings, and creating an story after them would likelly requiere a canonization, wich would obviously create a storm of fan rage.

Apart for that, i think that Mass Effect 3 is much less immersive than it's predecesors (specially Mass Effect 1) and that's something that should be solved (I don't play Mass Effect because i want to shot everithing that spawns in front of my, i play it because i love to explore, share, and enjoy that magnificent universe) So, i would not like another corridor shooter. Also, I always expected a more mature plot for the end of the trilogy. The reaper war plot felt a little empty and dull, especially because of the extreme dramatization.

So, what kind of game would i like for a future Mass effect game? I would like to play a more mature, deep, and open game. Something settled before the events of Mass effect 1, that introduces a new plot (no more reapers) and at the same time doesn't fell disconnected from the first series and it's characters.

I don't want another corridor shooter, i want exploration (vehicle usage if possible), deep conversations (not only good/evil choices or click and hear), complex characters and side quests... I want too see a true living universe and it's inahbtants (advanced NPC Ai), and a more complex economy, combat and inventory system (Item colelction and crafting, true melee weapons, non-lethal weapons, advanced market…)

And of course, i would appreciate not to get epically disappointed by the ending.

continue with shepards story in me4.

if you pick destroy then the game begins with shepard waking up in a hospital.

if you pick control then the game begins with shepard creating a reaper replica of himself.

if you pick refusal then you wont be able to import your save.

if you pick synthesis then the game begins with shepard materializes out of thin air. oh you want an explanation for how that is possible? um... space magic

A few hundred years into the future having us work for the Shadow Broker (Liara, of course). Have the first third of the game be about gathering a great squad (ala ME2) and the last two thirds being going around the galaxy to different worlds solving problems and chasing down clues on how to stop some new big bad guy (ala ME1).

Best of ME1 and ME2.

A real ending, and no speculations for everyone.

Seriously, I don't plan on buying another story based game from Bioware again if they aren't going to tell people how it ended.

The problem with any post mass effect game is either you make it take from the troloogy or you reboot teh series. because unlike the DA series, the endings where close enough where DA2 the stuff in DA:O didn't matter.

But in Mass effects case, you have A) Reapers/Geth destoryed life goes on, B) Reapers alive under control of a semi Shep C) Green eyes

I can only think that with the Control and green endings it will be more of an mention in Galaxy news how reapers are helping out and what not, but you would think there would be a huge political differences. and changes between the destory and the green and blue ones.

So its really hard to say, what to give you ideas on, because the problem is, if you don't use the old data fromShep story then it will make it

Honestly I think it needs to be in the future in that, it allows us to use all the races, so we can play a quarian or an asari, or turian krogan or human,.

How about Mr. Hudson just not make another Mass Effect game. He screwed the pooch with ME3. What, is he in a race to the bottom or something? ME3 was so fantastically bad it hurts even to think about what I could've done with the money that I dropped on this game.

Whatever. I sincerely doubt Mr. Hudson will bother to read this thread, much less be able to cherry pick any good ideas from it. I hope he realizes that I and other gamers consider him a liar and a thief. He can take this supposed 4th Mass Effect game and cram it.
