Hello Bioware! I hope you guys are reading the forums :) I thought I would give me 2 cents in what I would like to see in Mass Effect 4.

1. The next mass effect game has to be a sequel.  (at least the next one that comes out)  go with what Ubisoft did for Assassin's creed, give fans their sequel after ME3 and then in between a new trilogy, release other ME in the universe, like the morning war, or first contact.  Not only will that please the fans, you will create even a more diverse universe for ME.

2. Make the new story something different and only touch on Sheppards story a little.  What I would of envisioned would be start at the end of ME3, a team of rag tag mercs are running from the reapers and hit a mass relay just as the mass effect is hit with the R/B/G beam and this overcharges there engines and sends them out of our universe with no way back and all they have is each other among other aliens and their only goal is to survive! This is something different and something not like sheppard which you already said you wanted for the main character. Or make it 1000 years in the future or something along those lines.

3. Now I am not a fan of this 3rd option but it seems a lot fo people want it, the ability to select your race. I personally think you should stay human...always. This makes it easier to write your story and other technical issues you might run into.  But if you did, make it sort of like Star wars the old republic.

4. Romances should be fleshed out a bit more.  Alot of people have fallen in love with your characters and take them pretty seriously.  Give him their snuggle scene/love scence/more one on one conversations with your love interest. Also more gay/bisexual/straight romance options, blaze new trails!

5.The ability to explore a bit more, like ME1, except not like ME1 haha(yeah you read that right) I loved how you could just on a planet...but then going over mountains/hills sucked ball haha so more on-foot/in space ship/in a vehicle like tank options for exploration, its a huge universe out there

6. Choices - you should always keep the ability to make choices, they make the users feel more passionate about the game, as you seen in the fan outrage about ME3 ending initially.  But it should be more like SWTOR, I'd like to know if I am picking a bad or good choice lol and add two more options, a Pink romance option and a say green neutral option.  There have been times in ME2 on my fem shep were all i wanted to do was say hi to Jacob and  my femshep ends up wanting to sleep with him right there on the work bench lol not my choice!

7. For the love of god, make auto-dialogue not the main way to talk to your teammates. While I believe it is nessessary for time issues/etx, if you do make a lot of auto-dialgue, you should still give us the ability to talk to the characters, I hated it when in ME3, I could not talk to my teammates after they finished their auto-dialogue part and only say "Hello Shepard" thousand times before the next mission.

8. DLC - this is a given, never stop until the next game comes out, we will continue to buy it!(you know you will reader)

Thats all i can think of for now. I hope the bioware team and Mr. Hudson are reading :)

1-- it will surely be

2-- but a new RAGE/FALLOUT thingies as we all like but don't want

3-- no race selection . you are human... people around are not so yes HUMAN.

4-- interraction a lot so yes, romance... yes if it could

5-- explore like ME1 Oo !!! are you crazy !!!!!!!!! it was hell killing game itself

6-- We'll all have choice, we know it, they know it now so....

7-- I want Gizmo at my side when I say that... say what ?

8-- DLC is like patch for me, better, better, better. The more I have DLC the more I deserve best cuz I pay. That's all they have to think about.

By the way it was nice from you.

Due to me being oblivious to internet news, I just learned it was confirmed Shepard will not be the playable character in ME4. They said for years 3 would be his last but I always assumed there would be a loophole. All my hopes...ruined...

If it has multiplayer, allow our manifests to transfer over.

Also, this was the top comment on the reddit thread discussing this topic

"less auto-dialogue and the return of a neutral option

remove most of the fetch quests or make them have more depth; especially ones that feel like they should have been more fleshed out (kharshan, dekunna, hanar homeorld, banner of the fifth regiment, etc...).

Make squad companions serve a purpose towards the forward motion of the plot. In me2 we had characters which while awesome or interesting (jack, samara, grunt, thane; james in me3) didnt have any reason to be there for the most part. Look how mordin prevented seeker swarms in me2 and how all the me1 companions were picked up as part of the main quest.

Feel free to make more unexpected companions like loghain in DA:O

narrow down the story for me4... Think firefly or what you tried to do in DA2

try not to fall into using too many obvious plot devices like everyone getting on the shuttle in me2 or the ending of me3

speaking of the ending; make sure it adheres to the themes of the game and takes into account the player character and his choices. ME1 and DA:O are recent good examples

your combat is very good and you dont need any major overhauls there... Though an option to use or not to use thermal clips would be nice. Also a custom class option would be cool.

Multiplayer was surprisingly great in me3. Expand on it for more story driven content (think halo 4's new episodical approach) and try to stay within the boundaries of lore

try and make more decisions have shades of grey. Think the witcher or even spec ops: the line. Paragon and renegade are great but they are predictable and arguably less interesting. You should be able to choose between both sides in both a renegade and paragon way. lastly, make a game you want to make for the joy of being creators rather than simply because mass effect is simply going to make money"

I feel there are good points in here.

No prequels, no MMO, no pure FPS/action/action-adventure game.

I really want another ME RPG trilogy, set AFTER ME3 and with a new hero we can customize like Shep and transfer throughout 3 games.

Plz Bioware!

So much this!

Like someone else stated, I'd like to see a new Mass Effect story set in the future. Somewhere between 100 to 500 years after the Reaper War. You could have it where the balance of power and galactic politics have drastically changed.
-Maybe the Alliance tried to reform after the war and failed, so Cerberus steps in to get things back in order for Humanity. The remnants of the Alliance reluctantly assimilate into Cerberus. Over the decades and/or centuries Cerberus changes from within. They're no longer the alien hating group they were back in the day, but they're not the prissy goody two-shoes boyscouts the Alliance was either. The Humans have become somewhat closed off, mysterious and xenophobic.

Yes, the ability to play as an alien of the many known species would be a very refreshing twist. They all have knowledge and stories passed down from the past about how the Human known as Shepard and his species once played a role in defeating the biggest threat to the galaxy, but now the Humans are different.
-Whether we play as Turian, Asari, Krogan etc., that character will have his/her own feelings about the Humans.
-You could also introduce a new alien race (or several) into the ME universe. Maybe their society wasn't hit as hard during the Reaper War. Maybe they're new to the galactic community. Hell, maybe they're from another galaxy. Are they running from something? Or are they a threat in disguise?

I also would like a return to that grand feeling of "F**K YEAH" awesomeness of the first game. The art style, character design, retro 80's sci-fi style music and feel made me never want to take Mass Effect out of my 360.

Give us realistic and believable reasons why we are walking in the footsteps of a Turian cop discovering some kind of conspiracy. You could come up with many other scenarios for Krogan, Asari, Drell where they don't start off as any kind of soldier. Give them a reason to pick up a weapon for the first time.

Any new alien species doesn't need to be humanoid either. The Hanar are a damn good example of what other types of intelligent life could be out there in the unknown parts of the galaxy. That's all I've got for now. There's so much going through my head about the new possibilities of any future Mass Effect game. Hopefully you'll consider many of the ideas here of myself and others and put them to good use in another kick a** story.

How about a new Mass Effect game that invalidates/retcons the the ending of ME3 so that Shep doesn't die, reapers go BOOM, Edi and Geth aren't screwed, and the Starbrat dies horribly.

Pretty much agree with what Cirus wrote but wanted to expand on a few things of my own.

1. Make it a sequel, as in 100, 500 or 1000 years in the future with new threats such as the yahg or a new collection of allied races wanting to conquer the galaxy.

2. Graphics – while not an issue for most people, it’s really hard to not notice the toned down textures (armour, ground, etc. in ME3). Make it for the next generation of consoles or at least include a proper HD textures for pc.

3. More expansive areas – make them more open, a lot more things to explore, find and much more quests.

4. Side quests – this REALLY needs to be addressed in the next ME game, there needs to be more side quests with their own locations, as in you fly to that planet, land and do the mission which is not just a multiplayer map. No eavesdropping, you should be able to talk to the NPCs to grab the quests and finally a much better side quest tracking system, with the ability to set active waypoints, example below.

Quest Name from  NPC at LOCATION
Location of quest objectives:
objectives from completion:
ACT:
Rewards:

5. Better inventory, like an RPG sort of like ME1 but much, much better. The customisation window on the table from ME3 was a cool idea but the inventory just felt really flat and just made for consoles. If done right it could be great on consoles and pc but I have yet to find any games inventory to be good.

6. Mods: give the option for people to mod the single player game or at the very least the inventory and quest UI

I would love to see something set AFTER Mass Effect 3. Not a prequel, those are just getting stale now.

I realize this is difficult due to the vast differences in each ending but I'd rather see them pick one as canon and just go with it rather than moving backwards in time. Yes it would cause some rage but at this stage, what wouldn't?

It could be interesting to see something focused around humanity's continued struggle to find its place among galactic society, which seemed to me to be the main theme in ME1.

Sadly I doubt we will ever get a sequel. The writers have all but written themselves into a corner now by making the endings so vastly different. However, I am hopeful and would gladly be proved wrong :)

A couple of things they can do:

If no one is ready to part with the current ME trilogy, then they can create a full multiplayer game, and continue the Galaxy at War effort. Modes can include ME3's multiplayer, as well as missions where you have to complete a specific objective, such as exploring through a base, fighting through hordes of enemies, trying to secure a Reaper artifact. You can also infiltrate a Cerberus base and do some data mining to learn more of their experiments with Reaper technology. It essentially has a dungeon crawling element to this particular mode.

Now for a brand new Mass Effect series, it should be more like Dragon Age II, where you have a more personal story. BioWare has already played their "EPIC PLOT" card, and it would be retarded if somehow an EVEN GREATER threat becomes apparent.

Start by not letting Casey Hudson or Mac Walters anywhere near it.

A good thing would be to leave the lead writting to Weekes and the guy that wrote the tuchanka mission ( really, that guy deserves an oscar. He created the most amazing arc in ME inside the worst game of the series).

To think there will be another Mass Effect game is amazing. Thank you BioWare!
Here are my suggestions:

I'd love it if they could bring back the RPG experience of the game.
Less auto dialouge, and back to the wheel of choices.

It'd be awesome if the back-story of the main character could be made in the manner of Dragon Age Origins, letting us experience it in game play rather than having it in plain text. This would allow for the chanse of playing other races than Human as well.

I would love to see and explore more areas on the major races home planets.

Since you are doing something new, there's time to make female Turians.
And female Drell, Elcor, Hanar, Batarians and Volus's too

Perhaps, we could finally get to see the Raloi's.

I personaly like the "Hero" concept, but I wouldn't mind going in a different direction this time around.
An anti-Hero, non-military, dealing in the underground business of things with the risk of actually getting caught. No diplomatic immunity.

Thanks for reading!

Exactly! This would be great!

Some really great ideas in this thread. All the "something with shepard" comments should be ignored. My shepard died at the end of ME3 and he needs to stay that way.

I think going an Dragon Age: Origins format would be the best for this game. Keep the action/fighting as is in ME3 (which is amazing!), but return to the majestic role play of Dragon Age Origins mixed with the wonder and exploration of ME 1. It's a full and wonderful universe out there and allowing players to experience it their way is the best direction.

Multiple races and classes, not a single hero. I don't mean this in a bad way, but since DA2 kinda became Dragon Effect, that being it was made more like the ME series, why not make a large open style game like DA:O or similar?

Race, class and background choices that matter with customization and a ton of replayability.

Well... I would like to see the future... more than the past... I would love to read and hear about MY (save-imported) Shepards exploits and heroic deeds, the same way I learned of the Krogan Rebellions or the Rachni Wars...
I am not saying that the save game import should have a meaningful impact... but I would love if my Shepards legends would live on in future trilogies...

And that is the second wishfull thinking... I think the next gameS should be part of a new trilogy... and feature save-import...

Besides that... just... make it awesome ;)

Keep the TPS mechanics of ME3, add all the RPG elements of ME1; give a deep, rich in content story like ME1 or 2, and let us explore the ilegal side of the galaxy (join mercenaries, being a cold opressive SOB, or build a smuggling business).

And please, pretty please make a ME MP stand alone game, so you could focus on the SP with no problem.

I'm happy for Bioware to set the story/plot however they like provided they implement the following:
- No Children & no Starchild like characters, Bioware got the opposite reaction to those than they expected!
- No Autodialogue (or minimal like ME2)
- Freedom to do 90% of the missions in any order (i.e. mostly open like ME1&2, unlike the linear ME3)
- Real Bossfights at the end, not just dialogue

If ME3 had the above, it would have been near perfect

Merge this into the other topic if you want, this is gonna be long so figured i'd make my own thread.

Here goes.

Graphical/Engine/Artstyle.

Id love to see ME4 on Unreal Engine 4 or equivalent and released on Next Gen Consoles(please dont shovelware us another game, let the next set of mass effect games be Next Gen._)

Also a return to open areas like the presidium in mass effect 1, instead of tiny crampt areas like the presidium on ME3 with a loading screen in between levels(heres hoping next gen consoles have SSDS so we can go back to quickloads and seemless loading transitions)

PLEASE, Please, please, ditch the anime junk, it really just didnt fit with the rest of the game at all. The first two games didnt have any anime stuff, why/how it got added on the third is annoying and silly. The general artstyle was great otherwise.

A proper PC port would infact be wonderful. PC games always age much better than console games when a proper port is done because you can up the graphics as time goes on. Also realize that gaming on a console and a pc is in some ways fundamentally different. Some forthought on the PC menus and control customization would be great(spacebar im looking at you). While the menus are fine in the second two games, it might be worth noting that Menus like what appeared in ME1 were much easier to navigate on pc than console. (we can handle a few more things on pc in menus if you feel like adding it)

Gameplay.

Even more customization than before, you guys have done a great job so far with character creation), id love to see multiple races and even voice actors in the next game along with more armor customization(and weapons). Squad customization would be awesome too.

Planet exploration. One of the great things about a game set in a galaxy is that theres plenty of unknown places you could potentially explore. Mako missions were somewhat ok, but there was more rovering and less stuff to do on the planets usually. The basic premise was awesome it just failed to deliver content in a way that wasnt boring.

Planet scanning is boring. ME2/3 planet scanning was quite possibly the most boring thing about both games.
although the occassional mission you found was fun in ME2, in ME3 the planetside missions felt both tacky and tacked on from multiplayer.(like seriously, if we didnt have MP would we have not gotten side missions on planets?)

A smaller more personal squad would be awesome too. ME1/3 seem to have gotten the squad size about right, ME2 just had too many. More squad dialogue would be fantastic.

A greater focus on story(and choice), with less auto dialogue that seems out of character(if you want to put auto dialogue in, at least make it character neutral). Action and shooting stuff is great, just as long as the story is woven into it correctly and things dont seem hodge podge at times, or are taken from books and comics, then all the sudden were like, oh hey where did this random guy come from(kai leng).

Co-Op. Sure ME3 MP was fun for a while. but got boring after a month or two. Story Driven Co-OP dlc would have been much more fun. Esp if you are doing Co-Op only DLC that adds Co-Op missions even if they are separate from the game kinda like ME3 MP is.

Those are things that really stood out to me through 3 games and 10k+ hours of gameplay(and counting). Hopefully i organized my thoughts into something someone can actually read without going OMG whats this wall of text.!

EDIT::  Rpg elements making a comeback!(and loot? maybe loot. after all who doesnt love loot?)
