2.Let the story be in the future, because we know the primary important events of what happened in the past and it just kills the excitement of what's going to happen in general.
3.Bring back Segue ending such as ME1 where it felt that ME could go anywhere with it's story going from maybe Reapers to uknown alien threats like the Thorian.

Have it set in the ME universe, with all the familiar races and locations.
Story is up to you.

My vote is for moving to a new Galaxy (not that I'll be buying it until player reviews are out and really positive, seeing as the direction they seem to be moving in this genre is terrifying).

Instead, create a new ActionRPG3rdPersonShooter trilogy with a new customizable protag, and set the game hundreds of years in the future, probably about nearly a full millennia, so that even the youngest Asari and Krogan in the OT have died out, a whole new generation. This 1000 years later start will allow you guys to create a whole new look to the Galaxy, the technology, and humanity, while still keeping the old races and locations we all know and love.
This will also be far enough ahead in the future the impact of the choices made in the OT could be minimized to create a more or less universal starting point and framework for the story. Players should, however, be able to import their ME3 saves, and thus allow the game to adjust certain key details based on the ME3 choices, particularly the final choice. If control or synthesis was chosen, you could add in backstory about how the Reapers were finally put to rest. Destroy would be the standard I'd guess, but in order to have Synthesis sadly still make sense, I would think you'd have to say that at some point, everyone reached a new sort of hybrid singularity point on some level with machines and AI. For those who choose Synthesis, the effect would have to be decreased back to more normal organics through some other lore point.

Edit.
Also take all the time you need to finish the game. If you need to spend an additional three months, six months or a year on the game to ensure quality do so.

But overall almost everything. I just want to learn more and more about the world. Of course, a very far timeframe, vith almost new species maybe a little too 'alien' to feel Mass Effect, so I think the Protean Wars maybe the maximum I expect. But I'm really open.
With brain-storming I'd even go out of the RPG genre. An RTS about the First Contact War, a detective story around the Galaxy before the events of Mass Effect, an economy-sim about the rebuild or just any expansion time, a strategy game about a new and green mercenary gang earning name then growing big and dominant in the Terminus systems....

More than this, they will not give a damn about what people or players think. So writing romans or paragraphes of ideas will be useless.
People had many ideas before ME3, before EC, they didnt care. Why should care players' opinions now ?
It's nothing but a PR.

1. Take a page from DAO and lets us have background or origins (bounty hunter, c-sec, soldier, smuggler, fighter pilot, etc.) that tie into the story a bit.
2. Set it WAAAAYYYY into the future. Far enough into the future that you can kind of get away from ME3 ending choices.
3. I think I am probably in the minority on this one, but I say give us an even bigger threat than the reapers. I just feel ripped off a bit that the conclusion to one of the biggest space epics of our time was a little less than epic. But start small and build to a galaxy-wide conflict again (perhaps even more than one galaxy).
4. This one is the most important. If you set off to tell an adventure story then tell an adventure story and stick to the same tone throughout. Don't veer off in to philosophical country at the last minute. Follow this formula "Bad guy threatens world/galaxy. Kill bad guy." Don't make the player capitulate to them. I want that feeling of "F-yeah! We did it" much like the killing of sovereign in ME1 or escaping the collector base in ME2. Both of those gave me goosebumps and almost made me jump out of my chair screaming "Victory".
PS And for god sakes take your time and don't rush it (if EA will let you).

I'd rather the details of the first trilogy not really be addressed. No save imports. Little to nothing in the way of cameos. The Reaper war is mentioned, but no choice be addressed. Really, the endings are best left buried and forgotten. Fresh start. Tabula rasa.
Also here's hoping there is no multiplayer. Or at least that it would have zero connection to the main game at all. Finally, remember that the destination is every bit as important as the journey, if you know what I mean.

Except: For the love of God don't make the same mistakes as you did in Mass Effect 3.
DON'T: Try to do anything fancy with the tried and true formula's. It didn't work in Dragon Age 2, it didn't work in Mass Effect 3.
DON'T: Rush. DON'T! Take as much time as you could possibly need. You did a good job with Leviathan, and it looks like Omega's shaping up too. Make sure that the Original game you make is just as good.
DON'T: Monetize the game. Just no. Earn the trust of your fanbase, don't nickel and dime them.
DON'T: Bow down to the corporate overlords. A straight up revolution would be preferable to becoming a corporate slave if it comes to that.
Just keep those in mind, and you'll probably be able to churn out a decent game.
I don't know what should be done for the premise, but please, please don't make a prequel. I never understand why Humanity is so important when they are such newcomers to the Galactic Stage. We have only been there for thirty years, at best, when we first met the aliens, we had a handful of colonies, and miniscule navy. Compare that to the Asari who have had literally thousands of years to develop all of that, how the heck can they take us seriously.
DON'T: Make Humans the central focus. We honestly don't care about Humanity. Nobody shed a tear over Earth, and hardly any of the Human Characters written are as well liked as the Aliens.
I don't see how anyone, including the players, could take Humanity seriously if they have less power than they did in Mass Effect 1.
Aside from that, write the story how you will.
Gameplay wise, keep it the same game as the original Mass Effect series was, a shooter RPG, not an MMO, not anything else, just a solid Shooter RPG, ok?
I think it's a good idea to make an Origins style character, selecting class, selecting your race, (The Council Races, Asari, Turian, Human, Salarian), being given a backstory, similar to Sheperds (Spacer, Colonist, Homeworld), and then playing out a mission, again, similar to Sheperds (War Hero, Sole Survivor, Ruthless), that gets the Council's attention, and sets you up for SPECTRE induction, the following mission possibly setting up the premise for the trilogy. Then you get your ship, and your crew, and you are good to go.
As for the guns: I feel that in Mass Effect 3 we have been overloaded with Guns. I am a shooter fan, but even I think there are too many to handle. In Mass Effect 3, I would find a gun, but before I had a chance to get used to it, I would find another, and then another, and I wouldn't have enough time to get a feel for them. Perhaps you could go back to the simple upgrade system in Mass Effect 2, or follow Halo's example, and have it so each Gun has a different function, but whatever you do, don't try to bridge the two.
When it comes time for choices, don't set up a choice if you don't intend to follow up on the consequence later. Let's face it, none of Mass Effect 1's choices mattered in the slightest. Ashley and Kaidan were pallet swaps, the Rachni queen is miraculously replaced if killed, and the council is another pallet swap. If you want to have choices that makes us pause to think, give them genuine consequences, and if you can't, then don't try to make us think it's a big deal.
Also, some type of ship-to-ship combat would be really appreciated. Assassins Creed 3 did it very well, albeit at sea, and not in space, but if they can add such a component to their game, and do it so well, I don't see how you can't. Vehicle combat would also be a nice addition. What was the point of the Firewalker missions if the Hammerhead wasn't going to be a part of Mass Effect 3? But vehicle levels would be good for exploring terrain, a sense of scale, and taking down large enemies (like Reapers in Mass Effect 3)
Make sure the side-quests are interesting, like in Mass Effect 2, not the fetch-quests of Mass Effect 3, have fun with them, make them interesting, use them to flesh out the story, even give them consequences.
The multiplayer is alright in Mass Effect 3, I actually don't mind it's inclusion. But make sure that it does not draw away from the Single Player.
DON'T: Try to be competitive. Don't try to become a major multiplayer title like Halo. Just don't. It won't work out for anyone.
The Horde Mode is alright, but adding something new might also work. Don't make it competitive, cooperative would work much better. Side-By-Side Spectre missions would be really cool, perhaps a way to show off your individualized characters.
And as for little things I'd like to see thrown in as well:
*New Alien Species: Something new, and something that does not look Human.
*Alien Culture: Showing of the species culture, lore, planets, military, and everything else would be a plus. Throughout the Shepard Trilogy, we only ever saw the Human point of view. An Origins style would give us the point of view of the Council Races themselves.
*The Ability to customize Squadmates Armor
*Multiple Hub Worlds in a variety of locations: Mass Effect 1 and 3 only had the Citadel as a hub, and as a result, is my least favorite hub of the series. Some good hub locations: A space station, a garden-world colony, a military outpost, an asteroid belt, a homeworld. Variety is good, because it shows us the different spectrum of Galactic Life
Show us the state of Galactic Politics. Generals, Senators, paper pushers, show us the web of connections between the species, and give us people who can give us an ear in.
And these are my thoughts for now. I know no-one's gonna read this, but I think I made a few good points.

Maybe 200 years after the Reaper War, new races sound good - there could be a human/vorcha hybrid breed now too.. those frisky vorcha!!
Also, 3 playable races - ala DA:O, Human (who I always play, gives me 'Human Pride'), Asari (will be a huge hit with the ladies and some guys) and Turian. I chose these 3 because they all speak in a similar fashion (Salarian/Krogan would be too differentiated to pull off I reckon) and they all could have interchangerble armor, with female/male being the main difference in armor design (devs prefer this, and can make more armor sets instead of having to do 3 different versions of each).
Since it's 200 years after the Reaper war, we can expect a new dose of biotic powers to have evolved too - new biotic chips to utilise.. sounds tasty! Also weapon tech will have advanced, new political struggles will have ensued and we can have new rivalries and grudges to deal with within the 'now recovered' galactic community.
The relays networks all fixed up by then no doubt, and we can see where the world has gone since the victory above Earth - and I know, a canon ending will have to be chosen, but make it destroy - it's the only one that really fits (apart from refuse) with everything (waiting for synthesis lovers to flame lol) - but it needs to be done to really move forward.
Axios! Mass Effect is worthy (of a sequel, not prequel)!

Indeed. And if this is the start of a new story arc, this time, the story should be planned out in advance. Not to the last detail necessarily, but at least an outline of the story's direction.

- Untelated to the first trilogy. Neither a direct prequel nor sequel: A prequel would likely not be that exciting because we all know what happened, and the possibility of a meaningful sequel is precluded by the endings of ME3 - I really don't want one of the three endings to be made canon.
Just make the game as far removed from the original trilogy as possile in terms of story: no import from ME3, no mention of Shepard (or "the Shepard", ick) or even the Reapers, if possible. I don't care if it's set before or after, as long as it's unrelated.
- Planet exploration! I really liked landing on planets and exploring in ME1 and missed it a lot in 2 and 3. I loved seeing the colours and landscapes on the different planets!
- Art style closer to ME1, my favourite game in the series, with its blues and whites and scifi aesthetic. I really loved it.
- Equal races: i don't really care what races there are, but I didn't like the human-centricness of ME3. I thought it was about saving the whole galaxy, not just Earth?! I thought the enemy were the Reapers, not stupid Cerberus! But not to start ranting, just make all races more equal - maybe let us play an alien pc, or have a choice of characters.
- Squad and love interest interaction is good - the more, the better. ME3 and DA2 both did this very well, so the same again or more, please!
- Finally, make there be fewer choices or branches if necessary, but please make the consequences real and meaningful - not like the rachni queen and NOT like the pointless, dry number that was EMS.
Ok, here's hoping our opinions will make a difference!

In which case, the question I'd ask is what events in ME3 were flagged and can potentially form part of the next installment after 3?

Dont bite more than you can chew. Dont make grand promises you cant keep. Like the choices mattering, when you know or at least expect you have to railroad them in the end or your masters, the EA, give you too little time to accomplish that. Fans get pissed off if theyre promised a moon from the sky and what they end up getting is a couple of lunar rocks. And as we have seen here, they have a long memory and dont forgive easily.
Also, hire some lore guy on ME, that checks for continuity, errors and plotholes. I think you will need one, you cant just jump around with the lore, it has to be kept consistent or it takes the players away. Letting slip the deception book was one of the big indicators that you dont have a person like this who looks stuff up before it is given green light.
