I would like more sci-fi and more role playing. It's what I love about Mass Effect.
To cater to the sci-fi geek in me I'd prefer a new ME title to be set in the future (not the past, not the first contact war, but something NEW). Maybe a slightly closer future where planets are still separated or interstellar flight is about to pick up again (since the mass relays were destroyed(?)). This could be 100 years after Shep, or 1000 years; who knows how long it takes to reintroduce interstellar travel. So the universe is separated, with different cultures having developed on different planets, but is coming together once again. Some planets could be very tech savvy and spearhead a new interstellar era, and there could be extreme colonies/planets that are extremely "racist" and xenophobic up to the point where they have committed genocide on alien minorities which were stranded on the planet (even genocide against humans by a hanar majority, to make up something random), some could have developed an AI, just about anything fathomable could be done, just to set a unique feel
for the universe and create a diversity of issues where you can shape the future of the galaxy. E.g human domination, or peaceful co-existence (by removing any dangers to civilizations), or whatever makes sense. Maybe you want to reshape a universe where technology and science has high standing, perhaps even enslaving an "AI race", or one where highly developed ethics and sustainability becomes the norm, or on
I'm sure there are enough races and planets and "stranded colonies" to create the highly cultural relativity that we expect of the sci-fi genre, and also enough races and issues to eliminate the need to instantly create a big bad guy -- Let the universe stabilize be
fore an obvious big bad guy is introduced. And as you go along, the way you role play
your character shapes the future of the universe. Climax could be reached when "
your side" and the "enemy factions" battle it out, maybe you're
for human domination ala Cerberus, and put together a strong human
force and fight a coalition of "aliens", and create
your own bubble or sector of the galaxy with human dominance, or you are part of the "coalition" and fight
for co-existence.
The politics could then change once a big bad-guy is introduced in a sequel, to homogenize the different choices made in the first
game, where, if you choose human domination you perhaps interact with more human factions, and what not, where a few mission locations or objectives or NPCs would differ based on previous choices, but the overall arch could be "cooperation or die", to make the storyline come together instead of splitting it further apart.
Not sure if this has to take into account the ending of ME3, but I'm pretty sure we can
forgive and
forget if
your ME3 ending doesn't visibly shape the future in the new ME series.
But yeah. This would most likely satisfy my need
for sci-fi with all its magic; and role play elements where you can shape
your character and the universe in which you live, maybe create a new council where you indirectly choose which races are represented on the council. If done on a "smaller" scale, you can end up with a sector of the galaxy that is dominated by humans, or "peaceful co-existence", and then expand with a sequel by introducing a universal bad guy and
forcing everyone across a much larger part of the galaxy to work together. Regardless of what "
your" sector looks like -- and still be able to introduce a new setting that works
for any kind of previous play-through.
[ Oh yeah, just to make it clear: No MMO. Perhaps allow co-op, so you can start a play-through either together with a friend or alone, and then
your friend can join
your universe (or you join his), and together you both play through
YOUR story. Maybe he takes the role of someone who would otherwise have been an NPC (squad-mate). Without the need to give him dialogue options. Just let him pop into the world and join the action, but take a backseat on the story arch (and
for dialogues he per
forms the lines and roles of the standard NPC); and to advance his own story he has to create/load his own
game. This would only serve to add co-op into story mode, so that 2 or more people can do missions together while watching (any part of) the story unfold, based on the "host", without having to consider RP elements. But yeah, that would just be icing. And is something I missed in the current ME series. To bring a friend along with you. ]
