The irony of Hudson asking for our opinion is overwhelming.

However, since he had the courtesy of at least asking us, I shall play along.

  • Drew Karpyshyn back as lead writer. Make it happen damn it.
  • Make it for PC first, give us PC guys some love when it comes to controls, video-settings and all that lot. You can adapt the game for consols when it's properly awesome for PC.
  • I'd like to see more RPG elements, such as skill trees, customizable gear and stats (and spaceships!), play as any race. That kind of stuff.
  • Still 3rd person, absolutely no dumbed down FPS for 12 year-olds!
  • No MMO OR prequel
  • It has to be a sequel. Preferably with Destroy as retconed cannon., since that was the bloody mission from day one ME1.
  • Shepard is alive (the breath scene implies he/she is, which is another reason why Destroy is the best option to retcon-cannon). Shepard IS Mass Effect.
  • Less auto-dialouge, more idle between-missions dialouge with NPCs.
  • More and better fleshed-out LI's. This is a great feature that really makes the game feel more real and makes us invest real emotion into the game. I can't imagine ME without it.
  • Varied exploration, both on planets and in space. Land/air/underwater etc.
  • NO day 1 DLC!! Seriously, do not do that. Period. Really.
  • Evolve the gameplay from ME3. Smoother and better.
  • Storywise, I'd like the Dark energy-thing to take on a new importance.
  • MacHudson makes coffee for Mr. Karpyshyn and brings him several tasty sandwiches a day. They are also forbidden to speak to the fans by audio only. IF they HAVE to appear on camera they have to to so while wearing chicken costumes and dunce caps, and they must not speak... they can only communicate to us by writing on a piece of paper.:police:
That is all.

This/\\!

Alain Poitras, the quadriplegic man who soloed Bronze and Silver by himself should be in Mass Effect 4 somehow. I don't care if its an easter egg, but get this die hard, badass fan in there.

Bring back planet exploration-I'm sure next gen consoles can handle more detailed worlds.
Better, more in-depth side-quests, not the listen and fetch stuff from ME3.
ME1 dialogue, with neutral option and option to discuss further on left side of the wheel.
Vehicles.
Realistic combat armor, NO catsuits for men or women
Definitely "I'd like to see more RPG elements, such as skill trees, customizable gear and stats (and spaceships!), play as any race."

If an MMO was created Shepard can stay gender ambigous by not using any gender specific words, however Bioware would have to decide on a canon story and it wouldn't reflect the views of everyone on how the ME universe should be in.

Saying that Shepard's decisions would mean nothing in a few hundred years isn't necessarily true because there are some choices that would have long term effects on the galaxy such as who was leading Clan Urdnot and whether or not the genophage was cured, there's also the events on Rannoch to consider because even that was a significant event. Finally the decision on whether to control, destroy or synergy are significant as well. Synergy alters what it means to be alive and with the Reapers now working alongside everyone, technology would leap forward in leaps and bounds. With control all of the races would be still weary of the fact that the Reapers still exist, even though they aren't openly attacking them and be preparing themselves just in case the 'peace' is broken. Additionally they would abandon the Citadel due to the danger it poses, that being a Reaper trap and the site where a new human reaper was going to be built and both ending choices the mass relays would be completed much sooner than if the destroy option was selected.

Even though some may not want a prequel, it can be done but only before the introduction of humanity. This being said because we can explore the other races more deeply and freely (by expanding on their social structure and tiers within their military forces), due to the fact the writers made humans look like the underdogs and gave them centre stage during the Mass Effect trilogy. By setting this up they can then jump forward to after the Reaper conflict. This can also set up the next next galactic threat, while also setting up perks ford This would also help set up the next galactic threat and set up perks for the different races, but this could also be used as an opening to  a game set after the Reaper conflict.

If a sequel were to be made it would then need to utilise the import system in order for the 'significant' and 'defining' moments apparent in the post Reaper Conflict universe and the best points to pick up from would be control and destroy ((synergy just feels weird).

The ending effectively ruined my chances of buying a sequel, and I don't think a prequel could survive based solely on the inevitable ending. I just don't see a lot of hope for a good game (story-wise, of course. I have no doubt the gameplay will be great).

I would prefer not a sequel, not a prequel, but a story inbetween the ME Universe and the Reaper Story:

plain, a story with Time Travel.

The Main character isn´t travelling through space only, but also through time.

We have a new hero, a character one can create out of the known races. The start of the story could be set in the distant future or the distant past. We could play in the era of the Protheans, of the First Contact War, or long after the Reaper conflict, and discover a new view on the events we experienced in the original trilogy.

In the end, the story could evolve to such a point, that the player or our team are the creators of the Reapers, the Starchild. A story that could expand the philosophical potential the original trilogy had, in that we travel through a different dimension of the universe we already know.

After mass Effect 3's ending I don't think I could ever play a prequel (And I despise them in general). If it's a sequel that is handled really well and includes major characters and squad members from all of my favorite races then I would consider playing it based on other peoples feedback. I find it hard to get excited or engaged about anything mass effect related at the moment though, so it would have to look really promising to get my attention.

To be honest I don't really care about them creating a canon ending, since I didn't really care for any of the choices we got . I probably wouldn't play it if they had made the Krogan or Quarian's extinctions canon, because I liked the races too much for it to be the same without them. Ideally they would use the control ending, as it seemed the more neutral of the endings and would allow the most species to return.

It could be interesting to see things like how the krogan handle the cure of the genophage, or see the Quarians and geth working together in the future, and how the relationship lasts in the long term. it would also be interesting to see how the shift in power plays out, since races like the ones previously mentioned seemed to lose less in the war than the citadel races.

There is a lot of potential for a sequel to be really good, and explore completely new ideas. But after how Mass Effect 3 was handled I have very little faith in the next game. I hope that I'm wrong, hear that its fantastic and decide to play it, but It doesn't seem likely at the moment.

Anything post Mass Effect 3 is a wash in my opinion unless you intend to canonize an ending. A good number of people feel the endings aren't worth canonizing.(Cyborgs for everyone?)

If you set it far enough into the future (150+ years ) you don't need to canonize an ending. Just start with with the testing of a new FTL drive and rediscovering the Galaxy and the game storyline basically writes itself for the most part.

One thing I would want for the forum.. would be the ability to look up my own responses to see what I've already said, beign able to click somewhere to fidn my own posts in a thread so I know what sugestions or comments have already been given by myself.. To avoid repeating myself in threads with more than 20 pages where I can't remember what's already been said or covered.
Similar to being able to click a Bioware tab to see what Bioware employees have said in a thread :)
If it's there then I havn't been able to find it.
I know there is some kind of refence system under my forum profile, but I would prefer if I coudl access it from the forum to see if I got something else to add to a topic or if I've already said it.

A few things that I'd like to see.

  • Now let me first ask something from the fans. Don't fall into the trappings of labelling games RPG's. No one on the planet can agree what is an RPG. There is no consensus. It makes an interesting conversation.
  • As much as I don't want Mass Effect 4 to be considered by fans as an "RPG" I would like more choices outside of combat. More tough choices that drive the storyline and more dialogue choices for the protagonist.
  • I would love to see more different types of combat. Space fights and tanks. Make these available but also optional. Not all gamers want to fight inside a Mako. Not all gamers want to fight inside a space ship. I have no idea why they would decline, but some will.
  • Exploration: As I said before. Do it right or don't bother at all. The exploration sections in Mass Effect 1 were boring. Too many copy and paste planets spoilt what was arguably the best game in the trilogy.
  • Give us more hub worlds. I liked what you guys did with Illium, Citadel, Tuchanka and Omega in Mass Effect 2.
  • If you're going to have side missions, make them interesting like fighting the mercenaries in Mass Effect 2, the Malfunctioning Mechs in Mass Effect 2, the Geth Incursion in Mass Effect 1, any of the missions that involved past squadmate cameos in Mass Effect 3. Just ditch those missions that copy and past maps from multiplayer.
  • Choice of different races. Geth, Quarian, Krogan, Salarian, Drell, Turian, Human, Asari, Vorcha, Baterian, Raloi, Mech, Yahg. I love the voice actors who play the protagonist, but I'm willing to sacrifice this for more choice in character.
  • Less linearity in missions. Have you ever played Starfox 64 (Lylat Wars)? I loved how you could take a different path to end the mission. This led to a different mission that changed the outcome. As long as we don't get a toad who keeps dying or getting captured, I'm fine with you taking cues from Lylat Wars.
  • I loved the well developed characters that you have as squadmates throughout the trilogy. I loved them all! Yes every single one of them.
  • Give us more dialogue options. I don't mind banter during missions, but when I'm in a conversation outside of combat, I would like 4-5 options.
  • Give us meaningful choices with different consequences. Just take cues from Witcher 2.
  • Combat mechanics, powers and guns. Don't ditch the powers, power combos,  abilities etc. It would be nice if we could create our own classes, but as it stands, I really love what was done in Mass Effect 3. It's fun and its addictive. Keep up the good work.
  • More Mass Effect. Seriously. I wouldn't bother with this list if I didn't already love the series. I love Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3. Don't be discouraged from keeping this franchise going. I would really dread hearing the words "No More Mass Effect".

Here are some bullet points of what I would like to see in Mass Effect 4.

- Sequel, set in a timeframe that would allow for cameos by trilogy characters.  Say 50-100 years afterwards.

- Story should allow for an import from ME3.  Like ME2 and ME3, there can be a "default" backstory for players not importing.

- New protagonist.  Shepard's time is done, outside of a codex entry, or a statue, or a cameo if he/she survived ME3. I am ok with this new character being human-only, but would prefer a choice of races.

- Eliminate the Paragon/Renegade system and use a loyalty system similar to Dragon Age II's. Intimidate/Charm/Bluff can be handled the same way as Dragon Age II as well.

- Keep the combat system from ME3, as I agree with Bioware and Casey Hudson that they have hit the "sweet spot" with combat.  Only changes I would like to see are ammo "powers" (incendiary, AP, etc.) going back to being gun mods like in ME1 and that grenades be treated as a weapon (again, like ME1) instead of as a power.

- Areas should be a mix of (more) open spaces like Eden Prime or Virmire in ME1 and the "corridor" areas of ME2 and ME3.

- ME2's dialogue system/philosophy please.  I get why Patrick Weekes and the other writers like auto-dialogue, but I want to PLAY my games, not watch them.

- Substantially reduce the "drive-by" or "stealth" sidequesting like the Citadel's in ME3.  1 or 2 quests are fine, but ME3's amount was ridiculous.

- Instead of pre-set classes like Soldier, Adept, etc., I would like to see a more open system where I can mix/match 6-8 powers from a master list of military, tech, and biotic powers.

- Weapon and armor upgrades should be handled like ME2 (i.e. upgrade bought or discovered as loot and applied to all weapons/armor), not the I thru X mess that ME1 and ME3 used.

- Companions should be able to wear any armor PC can, just like ME1. Given the improvements in both ME2 and ME3 in how we choose squad gear, I don't think adding this back will be the mess ME1 was.

I have purposely avoided giving specific story suggestions as I remember being told once that doing so means the developer (Bioware in this case) cannot use them for copyright reasons.

-Sequel, not prequel. This means canonizing one of the three endings. It's the only way to make a cohesive world and not waste lots of resources in dozens of possibilities, I understand this problem but there should also be a compromise with the choices the player made in ME3 concerning the krogans, quarians and geth. The krogans must be present because whether you cured the genophage or not they could still survive and stabilize their numbers. The quarians and geth are another different story, quarians should have more possibilities of being in the game because they can only get extinct once in ME3, however the geth can die two times, in Rannoch or on Earth with the destroy ending. Also I'd personally prefer to canonize the destroy ending as it is the most standard and leaves a much cleaner slate to work on. Control could also be possible although a bit more complex but synthesis is just a mess thematically.

-Commander Shepard is remembered as a distant legend. He is respected by many and hated by those who despise humans. It's even questioned by some that he ever existed, becoming half myth and half history. But his legacy and impact on the present society as a savior still remains.

-The story should happen thousands of years after ME3. Yes previous characters are dead but it allows more creativity in crafting the state of the galaxy, with a balance of power completely different from the one that we had in Mass Effect 3. Maybe humanity has lost its homeworld and now wanders the galaxy divided without a cohesive strenght. Maybe the leviathans mind control many races again and are the new threat now. Or the turians have become a much more imperialistic race and are semi antagonists.

-The protagonist shouldn't be a military. I heard Bioware was considering this and I liked this idea a lot. We could be a human mercenary or space pirate that sees himself/herself trapped in a war between two non-human factions in the galaxy, both with a questionable morality and for some reasons the character ends up having to make a stand for something. The morality of the character can be much more open in this context. Choosing a side isn't even necessary during the whole trilogy or at least until the end of it.

-The first game of the new trilogy could have a closer ME2 focus. As you are a renegade on the run from authorities you could rally a very quaint group of followers, with a great diversity in the race, morals, personality and skills.

-Bring some new races that have recently discovered the Mass Relays, this is a must to maintain the nerve and sense of wonder in the new trilogy. The galaxy is still a big place we know almost anything about. New planets to explore with a vehicle and side missions are important too.

-The ship of the new protagonist must be awesome xD. In sci-fi the ship is the soul of the team, it represents their power and strenght when they work together and stresses the importance of their friendship and how that makes them unique. So the ship has to be unique in some way and able to do some things others can't. Maybe it could be the reason or one of the reasons that forces the main character to confront directly the big conflict of the story for three games?

-Design the story of the three games more specifically to avoid unpleasant surprises and confusing changes of the main themes. The plot of the second and third games could be developed in detail when the first game is done but shouldn't be changed dramatically in order to preserve coherece.

-Create some situations where the outcome not always depends on the dialogue wheel but on your ability as a player. Example: You must get to some people in less than three minutes or they die, a bunch of enemies are in your path, so you have to kill them quickly. Or you take the paragon path saving someone but are now with less time to deactivate a bomb. If you took the renegade path you have more time to deactivate it but that person died. Maybe a scientist or a wouded squadmate with a health bar you have to protect from an enemy horde. If you fail the game continues with those consequences, the time span could also change slightly depending on the difficulty.

-I liked in Omega the alternative only the engineer had to redirect the power of the core quickly. This can also be a nice addition in the new series with an exclusive alternative only your class can perform.

Quite simply, I want a sequel made in the same style as Mass Effect 1 or 2. And there'd be no way to trump the magnitude of the story in the previous trilogy, so I'd like it if it were kept smaller, maybe made more personal.

Aye, smaller and more personal seems to be a good choice, and was my first thought, although that would also run the risk of getting the scrutiny DA II got.

There seems to be a lot of chimes for 'not a prequel', but a prequel about the First Contact war or something else referenced in the storyline would make a great game.  As for a sequel, I don't know that canonizing any one of the endings is going to be popular, since they all receive a lot of hate from people that chose another choice (or just despised all of them entirely).  So, a sequel is a risky venture.

I would love to see either a side arc (with a smaller, more personal story), maybe featuring a roguish main character, set just before or during the events of ME3, or a prequel that focuses on something other than Reapers.

I actually had put together a game doc back around the time I finished playing Mass Effect 3, it was just a practice draft to keep my skills warm, but I think the situation calls for as much input as possible if we really want to bring back the ME series on a different wavelength than previous incarnations.  I say try as many new things as possible and see what comes of it.  But in any case I went back and edited my game doc for Mass Effect Citadel, and turned it into more of a quick summery, y'know trimmed the fat and left the meat on the bone for ya.  I don't expect anyone to like the concept as a whole, but I do think there may be features to draw from it in any case.  So, enjoy!

-Mass Effect: Citadel,
Summary Revision Part 1

The opening scene assume-ably would take place on board the
Normandy SR-2 with Garrus Vakarian working on the engines.  At this point Shepherd asks Garrus about his
time on the Citadel before quitting C-Sec, and what exactly brought him to
quit.  Garrus begins going on about the
bureaucracy, but eventually states that there was one C-Sec officer that really
did rise above the rest and tried to break the mold, “really got things done.”  Garrus proceeds to tell the story as a flash
back where after the player creates their character, “(Player Name) Phoenix”,
and then their gender be it male or female defining voice and identification as
“him or her”.

The player would then choose Phoenix’s
race including a selection between Human, Asari, Turian, Krogan, Salarian,
Vorcha, Batarian, Volus, Drell, Quarian, or as a bonus for beating the game
once a Repurposed Geth causing bizarre story line twists one of which results
in Shepherd halting the story in disbelief for a moment.  The player would then go on to physically
customize the character using tons of new sliders, everything from facial sliders,
to body weight and height sliders, and even a gender slider that allows the
player to determine how masculine or feminine the body appears.

After finishing the customization
of Phoenix, the game picks up moments before Sovereign's Attack on the
Citadel.  Phoenix is essentially a
Civilian that due to his/her deeds is somewhat known in the Wards.  In Flux, after having a fond greeting with
friend and waitress Jenna, Phoenix goes to the bar for a drink and converses
with Doran about the recent events including anything pertaining to Shepherd's
choices that might have some effect on the story references within the game.  If the player imports a Mass Effect 1 save
game, this conversation and any other conversations throughout the game related
specifically to the pre-history of Shepherd's actions will be automated to follow
what occurred in the Mass Effect 1 save import.
After the first discussion, the Citadel suddenly goes under security
lock-down.

A battle begins raging outside
between the Reapers and the Citadel's defense forces.  C-Sec officer Armando-Owen Bailey who happens
to be in Flux at the time, and attempts to calm and organize everyone in the
club after receiving no response from headquarters.  Bailey uniforms everyone together
successfully, but the civilians quickly begin to panic again.  Phoenix here makes his/her first
Paragon/Renegade choice by first taking Bailey's gun and firing into the air,
and then convincing the crowd to either form up by calming them down or
threatening them.  Shortly after, Flux is
attacked and nearly destroyed by a squad of Geth that Phoenix and Bailey fight
off together with the help of a few other C-Sec officers.

 Part 2

Flux is burning and no longer
safe, thus with the leadership of Bailey and Phoenix, the small band of C-Sec
Officers takes a daring trek through the Citadel to get the Civilians from Flux
onto an escape vessel.  After
successfully doing so, Sovereign attacks the Citadel Tower.  Bailey asks Phoenix to stay and help, if
Phoenix refuses Bailey forces him/her at gun point.  Phoenix and Bailey's squad fight through a
horde of Geth to make it to and secure C-Sec headquarters.  Orders are then sent from an Alliance
Dreadnaught to help distract Sovereign.
Together Phoenix and Bailey actively attack Sovereign's arms as they
fight off the Geth.

Their efforts make good, and Sovereign
is destroyed by the Normandy.  Bailey
tells Phoenix that doing this took a real sense of leadership and courage, that
Phoenix was C-Sec material and Bailey would make the recommendation.  Some time passes and after C-Sec is rebuilt,
Phoenix has joined and finished training.
Bailey pairs Phoenix up with the experienced Garrus Vakarian who had
aided Shepherd in Sovereign's defeat.
Garrus is now working with C-Sec again to clean up crime in the Wards
after the attack on the Citadel left the infrastructure and economy
ravaged.  Bailey also eventually becomes
a permanent squad member.  As Phoenix
rises through the ranks he/she will be
tasked with taking down the five major crime lords on the Citadel.

During this task Phoenix and
his/her comrades will eventually get mixed up in a conspiracy by the crime
lords to manipulate the outcome of the election of the newest Human council
member to try and make Udina the winner, all at the hands of a manipulative
rogue Specter that will become Phoenix's greatest rival.  In the end the decisions made by the player
will lead to a final set of missions crucial to the outcome of the story and
the political situation in Mass Effect 2.
Based on the choice of the player, the final mission on the Citadel
Tower will either entail Phoenix letting the Rogue Specter hack the Main
Terminal in order to make the arrest, risking the potential for the election to
have been rigged in Udina's Favor, or letting the Rogue Specter go in order to
Re-Hack the Terminal in time to stop the election from being rigged.

If the player chooses to make the
arrest knowing the risk(Renegade Choice), the election will be rigged and Udina
will become Counselor, making the final mission Udina's induction ceremony
where Phoenix will have to fight off Garrus who decides to try and take out
Udina on moral grounds, if defeated Garrus escapes.  On the other hand, if the player chooses to
let the Rogue Specter go and Re-Hack the Main Terminal in order to keep the
election from being rigged(Paragon Choice), the final mission will be Counselor
Anderson's induction ceremony.  In which
Phoenix will have to kill the Rogue Specter who has returned to try and
assassinate Anderson.

 Part 3

Regardless of the final mission,
the game ends on a downer as Phoenix is fired for either having let go of the
assailant in the first place or aiding the assailant in rigging the
election.  Either way Phoenix is forced
to resign and goes underground to become a robin hood like character, or a
crime lord based on which paragon/renegade score is higher, or which one capped
second.  Based on the choice that the
player made in the final mission, the end of the flash back Garrus explains
that either he left C-Sec because Phoenix(Paragon Choice) deserved better than
back-door politics screwing Phoenix rather than showing gratitude, or Garrus
explains that leaving C-Sec was a matter of losing hope when Phoenix(Renegade
Choice) let making the arrest get in the way of committing to the greater
good.  Either way, Phoenix was fired, and
Garrus quit C-Sec.  However, the streets
are clean and the Citadel is more secure than ever.

This would the first game in the
series to be a complete sandbox free roamer.
This time around the Citadel is a massive open city that the player can
explore on foot or in a flying vehicle that can be apprehended at a moment's
notice due to Phoenix's C-Sec privileges.
Because the game is solely restricted to the Citadel there is no need
for a galaxy map, but there is a base like the Normandy for Phoenix.  The C-Sec offices will act as Phoenix's
headquarters to return to between missions.
Squad-mates can be found in their departments hosting special tasks that
the player can have Phoenix help with.
These activities include everything from taking out targets on the
firing range, to interrogating witnesses linked to random arrests.  Being populated with randomized NPCs,
occasionally the player can spot crimes being committed.  Each of the five Wards has a street rating
that is affected by each random crime that Phoenix resolves or ignores.  After making an arrest, Phoenix can return to
C-Sec to use the arrested witnesses and evidence to attempt to chain together
other more organized missions in order to crack down on crime in that
ward.  Throughout the city are stores,
clubs, and other miscellaneous locations that will keep Phoenix busy.

A majority of the squad-mates in
Citadel are members of C-Sec with a few exceptions.  The new squad-mate feature though would be
that each one comes with a special activity in the C-Sec offices that will help
Phoenix progress him/herself, or the Citadel.  So
Bailey and other classic C-Sec characters would be there throughout the
story.  Also, the free form environment
should give way to a number of more detailed explore-able activities on the
Citadel than was ever offered in the ME series.
Basically combine the story, combat, progression, and character building
of Mass Effect with an almost GTAesque freedom.
The player would have Phoenix purchase places of residence around the
citadel, aid or extort businesses, play oodles of mini-games, dance in the
clubs, form friendships relationships and rivalries with random NPCs, pick up “consorts”,
speed around in high octane flying vehicles, and manage city wide reputation
with different factions.  The focus all
still remaining on the Mass Effect centric story, and the important choices the
player makes for Phoenix, and for the Citadel.

Yes to a sequel, but no to another trilogy. Their next script should be for just one game. I just remember how badly the Human Reaper and the Collector Base was written. I wasn't happy when these plot-lines that I thought were important, suddenly became irrelevant in the final game. This made ME2, which was probably the best chapter in the series, a complete waste of time. Focusing on one story at a time would make it less complicated. I do have a bit of sympathy for the writers due to the complexity of the franchise, but it doesn't make sense to repeat the same mistakes by writing another script for all three games again if they couldn't cope with all the angles properly in this trilogy.

For the next game though, I would like to see Liara return as the Shadow Broker a few centuries after ME3. I could see Liara being a major player. She showed her bad side in the second game which I thought was great, and I'd love to see her evolve into her role as the broker. And including Liara (or Aria) would also be a smart way of linking the games by informing the player on what followed after The Reapers. I wouldn't want to see her return as a playable character, but playing as one of her many agents would involve Liara in the story.

I think numero uno priority in the next game though should definitely be making sure that the player's new character can be any one of the other races par customization. I feel like if they took a note from dragon age origins, there could be some real potential in playing out a career as one of the other races, and if they do they should make a story where they can go all out and have all race options available, at least that make sense as far as combat. I'm thinking Human, Salarian, Turian, Asari, Krogan, Vorcha, Batarian, Quarian, Volus, Geth everybody. The possibilities are endless as to what they could do with ways to start the story and go through it.

LOL another thing, if they made the Adult content purchased DLC they could still slap an M rating on the game without robbing the pervs of their fun
