Returning companions or just cameos?

Since you're suppose to be playing a new protagonist, it seems that meeting former companions from the previous games and developing relationships would involve learning their backstories all over again.  How do you suppose Bioware would handle this?

Or, are returning companions just more of the DAII cameo formula of spending a few minutes with them before they move on and leave you to your own adventures?  I would cry and say "take me with you!"

New ones, unless it makes a hell of a lot of sense.

I'm also not a big fan of cameos happening just because someone MUST see Warden's Love Interest #57. Unless it makes sense for someone to show up, keep them away.

I had been reading DA3's top 5 things you want to see, and returning companions was one of the predominant requests. I just want it specified if they want them as companions or just the brief cameos.

As I remember it when they were asking and answering questions in the DA2 board around the announcement of DA3 they said they were going to try to move pretty far away from the previous two games. This got mentioned a lot actually when people asked for Warden and Hawke cameos, and we were assured there probably were not going to be either. I think it's fair to say the only cameos we get in DA3 will just be fanservice with popular characters.

This is a move in the right direction. There's no way to save the series from DA2, best to try to ignore it.

Someone like Varric i could see as a companion again especially if Cassandra is one too.
Don't think any of the previous LI should return as companions of the new protaganist. Maybe cameos as companions of Hawke/Warden if they appear.

None, no returning companions and no cameos.

New pc new companions and a new story that makes sense.

This sounds like the opposite of taking the best of Origins and DA2.Image IPB

I hope not. After all that drama with Anders I would like for former companions to stay that way.

I really like minor characters from previous games being companions in later games.

Seeing how Merrill, Isabela, and Anders (yea, I know, not really a minor character) all had their lives affected by my Warden really helped me still feel connected to the first game. Especially in the playthroughs where both Hawke and the Warden slept with Isabella...

Which is why, even though I have no idea why everyone likes her so much, Cassandra and Cullen do end up being companions in DA3. Or if not them, someone else we've met before.

How can Leliana return? I decapitated her.

they could have the companions from DA:O and DA 2 as a temporary companion for certain quests.
That would be totally cool.

Probably biased because i enjoyed Isabela's turn as a companion so much but i agree that having former NPC's getting a turn in the spotlight as companions is a very good thing. Now hoping she stays offscreen with Hawke as

I certainly don't  want cheap cameos by former companions(think Alistair in DA2). Where there's a
compelling plot reason such as with the likes of Leilana/Morrigan etc then i'm
all for them to have roles as NPC's.

As far as returning companions, i'd personally like that to
be restricted to just Varric.

There is absolutely no reason to re-learn anyone's backstory. Their story could be the intervening 10 years of their life. There's no need to learn about people's childhood as part of their background. Old fans will know the full story, while newer fans would know part.

The majority of returning characters should be cameos, or potentially roles similar to that of Morrigan (so 'more than a cameo).

However, I don't think we really need a returning companion in the Inquisition's group now that we have Varric.

And as for returning characters from other sources, I wouldn't mind having a character from the novels or comics (such as Cole from Asunder or Maevaris Tilani from Those Who Speak & Until We Sleep) as companions.

I definitely want to see some returning characters, given that there are so many loose ends from the last two games.

The only character that I don't mind being a companion again is Leliana, because she and Cassandra would work well together. However, it would also make sense that only one of the hands of the Divine would be actively working with the Inquisition, so that could also mean that Leliana won't be a companion. That's fine.

I'd like to think there's some middle ground here.

I'd like to see returning characters have bigger roles than cameos that ammount to walking on screen and saying "Heya, still alive!" to the audience.

But I do not want to see any more returning characters in the party. I don't know, maybe it's just my own thing, but I like to think of the Warden's team as the Warden's team, Hawke's team as Hawke's team, and the Inquisitor's team as the Inquisitor's team.

I don't mind having the one carry over(Anders in DA2, Varric for DAI), but I don't want the Inquisitor's team to be half made up of people from the old games.

No for returning, yes for cameos.
Though i didnt care Anders returning, i prefer to have new companions with every new dragon age. Is not a saga like mass effect trilogy anyways. But cameos? YES PLSSSE *-*

I don't mind cameos but I don't want them as companions. I want to get to know new companions and figure them out.

Why must their be cameos for every past character? Fan-service? But it leaves a bloody sour taste to all the fans doesn't it and for people like me, we're left baffled. Alistair turning up as a Grey Warden (in place of Stroud) was hilarious.
