Besides, the protheans fought in a completely different galaxy of lore and cultures and races. There is so much there to be discovered!

Great, the only one I know I want dead lives.
"See exciting new places, meet breathtaking new cultures... and know that they're about to be obliterated." Yeah, I don't envy the marketing team that has to sell that.

Halo Reach sold fine.
Knowing that there's no hope can lead to entirely new ways of telling the story, and a kill-em-all type plot can be really effective done well. Ever read Consider Phlebas? That did it brilliantly.

Plus there's Titanic, at least one Age of Empires II campaign, plenty of Doctor Who episodes. (Examples include The Waters of Mars, and Victory of the Daleks states that the daleks are going to win right there in the title!)Jzadek72 wrote...

Three very different stories, very different genres, told in very different ways (some good, some a bit crap!) right off the top of my head. Just cos you don't have the imagination to make a good narrative out of it, Rifneno, doesn't mean it's barren storytelling ground. Exposes more of your own limitations than the story's.

@Jzadek a Banks fan? My first Culture book was MatterLove his work!
I thought I was the only one in this section of the internet! Matter's the only one I haven't read, actually. I was midway through it, but it got lost on holiday.
Fantastic writer, I'm lucky enough to live in the nearest big city to him, so I've seen him talk and he's as good at that as he is at writing. Awesome guy.

Yes, an angle that worked for a chick flick (and BTW, pick up a history book because a lot more people survived the Titanic than the Prothean war) would clearly work for Mass Effect. Because the audiences are SO similar.

We provided many more examples. Also, how does the chick-flickness of it at all affect the sad-ending? People like drama in whatever genre. People also provided a british SF dramedy, a RTS and some hardcore Science Fiction.

@ Jzadek I'm sorry you lost Matter. The middle is where it really me addicted(as in, could NOT stop reading it). Hopefully whoever finds it will start thinking about new thingsby the way, Choubri Holse is my favorite character
you?
If you liked Matter, then you'll love 'Surface Detail'. However, my fav Culture novel is still Use of Weapons, with Excession just behind.

The next TRILOGY starts off with the tension right as the Krogan master nuclear fission, then throughout the game we see the complete destruction of Tuchanka and seemingly the end of a once proud and fierce species. Sequel fast forwards to first contact with the Salarians and the agreement to fight the Rachni in exchange for help rebuilding their home planet, technology and a place in the galactic community. Then the series finale starts right before the Krogan Rebellion and ends with the dawn of the Genophage.
I. AM. KROGAAAAN!
