As a lot of people have already mentioned, the Carnifex is balanced as is right now. The problem is that none of the other pistols are worth using minus the Ultra Rares and not many people have those (and the DLC added Acolyte). The Phalanx and Predator are both just...ugh. I remember ME2's Phalanx was great, I used it all the time. On this game, you have to make choices for these guns. Yeah, they don't weigh a lot. But you're choosing to use this weapon over some of the others in your collection, it needs a reason to be used and those two have no reason to be used. The Arc Pistol can be effective, but not often. The Eagle is growing on me, but it's had to be buffed..3 times? 4? It still needs more buffing. That says a lot, in my opinion, to how underpowered the rest of the pistols are. The Carnifex isn't the problem, it's just the only one without the problem.

No need to nerf the Piranha damage wise. Just increase it's weight, which to me has always been the problem.

Why must they nerf the Piranha (again) and the carnifex?

Shouldn't they focus on buffing weapons that have become rather obsolete like maybe a bit of a damage buff to the typhoon? (I have a Typhoon IV but its still not packing enough power for a gold match without the need for equipment)

Instead, they buffed 3 weapons that have always been mediocre. Although, with the numerous locust buffs, I think a Turian soldier could make use of rapid headshots.........:bandit:

EDIT: I swear, there is not a single weapon that I have used on platinum that is at all effective like the piranha. Nerfing it would probably just lead to me not giving a care for this game anymore because it affects several of my characters that use it. My N7 slayer? I use it because its light, decent damage, and its a good substitute for the talon which I don't have. The carnifex? Like so many others said, I want a pistol that can actually kill something while being light enough to use powers.
Seriously, buff the weapons not many people use. The Locust seems to be on a very good path right now though.

Notice how the Buffs are always on crappy weapons no one cares about and even after they get Buffed they still suck?

But the Nerfs... oh the Nerfs... they totally ruin weapons and make them unplayable. Now that's not really Balance is it. Bioware?

And while we're at it - what gives with the Argus? Its ridiculously useless even on a Destroyer who is maxed for damage/RoF/Accuracy.

You could have at least gave us a useful weapon which we will actually use. Say... the Bloodpack Punisher or Adas Rifle? Or even the Valkyrie or Chakram Launcher. But no... you decide to troll us week in week out.

Please don't look at the Carnifex or Piranha and instead look at other things that need it more.

At a time of the year where many are seriously considering dropping (or already have) this game to move onto one of the other several releases coming out soon, I really don't think we need any more misplaced "balance" changes.

Until the Geth are "balanced" by dropping their ridiculous stagger ignoring skills and rocket spams and stagger-locking ability, we should not receive any nerfs to any of our classes/equipment, only buffs to the underperforming ones.

Eric, I'm hoping you can answer my first question regarding what is considered to be in the Carnifex's "class." Also, I'm hoping you'll take a couple of my suggestions into consideration. I'm hoping my tone conveys my respect for the work you folks do, as I don't mean to come off as hostile.

What weapons in its class does the Carnifex obscure? There are only three Rare pistols (assuming that's what you mean by class), the other two being the Acolyte and the Arc Pistol. I think a Carnifex nerf would just reduce the amount of pistols being used overall, not make folks use a broader variety of pistols.

If we include Ultra-Rares as part of the "class," I see the Talon and now the Acolyte much more frequently than the Carnifex. Not only do I see them more often, but they're also the only pistols I use. If the Paladin nerf were to be retracted, I might consider using a third pistol. Nerfing the Carnifex will just turn more people off pistols, IMHO.

As far as the Pirhana goes, I think its dominance has as much to do with its ease of use and mag size as it does with its power. If you're going to nerf it, reduce its accuracy and increase its recoil. That'll take some of the wind out of its sails without killing it. Plus, it would be a little more creative than a simple damage nerf. I don't mind it being balanced a bit more, but I'd hate to see it go the way of the Typhoon.

EDIT: Another thing you could do to reduce the Pirhana's usage (your stated goal, no?) instead of reducing its damage would be to increase its weight in order to make it less desirable to casters. Admittedly, if it is overused right now, it's probably because at X you can put it on anything without sacrificing too much in the way of cooldowns.

Dude, as soon as those weapons come out, Bioware is probably going to nerf them because they're super effective already even in story mode on INSANITY. The Argus flat out sucks even with a stability dampener and some damage boosts. I was so looking forward to getting a Krysae when the DLC first came out but when I got one, the nerf hit it and its so useless now due to the rate-of-fire.
Are they really making it hard on players on purpose? This is supposed to be a fun coop MP atmosphere but its starting to turn into an angry, hateful atmosphere mostly due to the RNG system and the actual gathering of credits. Weapons on platinum are almost obsolete (thank god they didn't nerf biotic explosions) and gold is painful with randoms lower than a rank of 100.

First of all, nice changes this week!

However, the news about next week have me a bit puzzled and worried.

First, the Piranaha. Yes, it definitely has the potential to be really OP, there's simply no denying that, it can take out bosses EXTREMELY fast. BUT, it's only OP on three classes (GI, Destroyer, Turian Soldier), the ones that can negate its biggest drawback, the accuracy. On every other class, while it's still a great shotgun, it's nowhere near as OP because the pellet spread is large enough to negate a lot of the damage it would otherwise be doing (unless you're at point blank range).

All I ask is that you don't over-do it with the Piranha, consider that it's only 3 classes that really make it overpowered, not the rest.

Now the Carnifex... ok, this is just confusing as hell. The Carnifex isn't THAT powerful, it's overshadowed by the Paladin if you have it at high level and good weight capacity, and saying that it is obscuring other weapons... how? Phalanx actually stands up really well up to it, same for the Arc Pistol. The Predator is a starter weapon, shouldn't really be compared. The Talon is a shotgun hybrid, and has a much higher potential than the Carnifex. The Acolyte is a niche weapon, you can't compare it to the Carnifex. The Eagle needs a buff, which apparently it will get next week, which is good... but wouldn't it be enough to leave it at that, buff the underpowered gun to make it a viable alternative to the Carnifex?

Anyone who knows me here knows that I'm perfectly fine with nerfs when they are warranted, but a Carnifex nerf really isn't warranted and comes COMPLETELY out of the blue.

Argus, just released today and needs a Huge buff

very very dissapointing weapon even at X, general consensus.

Very Heavy, huge recoil and needs to make at least +50% damage.. takes many shots with AR ampl and piercin amo III to take down husk on gold...

thax for the vid n7specops

Nerf the Piranha, and people will use the Reegar.
Nerf the Reegar and people will use the Talon (if they can ever unlock it)

Instead of nerfing weapons people actually like, maybe we could buff the ones that you never, ever see in lobbies because they suck donkey balls? Seriously, I have all but 4 UR guns unlocked with everything below that maxed or close to it, and only about 4 or 5 of those guns are worth a damn to use on higher difficulty levels.

And the Carnifex...seriously? The problem is that the rest of the pistols are terrible. That's why so many pistol users pack a Carnifex. I'm not sure what I would have done for the many months between unlocking the Carnifex and finally unlocking the next weapon worth a damn if it was significantly nerfed.

Ugh...I'm gonna finish my SP playthrough to finally watch the oh-so-awesome extended cut and then maybe go back to play something else until AC3 comes out.

i'm surprised many of yall havent noticed what's going on....the weekly balances arent really balances at all, they're just BW's way of trying to dictate what we (players) use in the game....which i dont agree with nor understand...they gave us a lot of variety, yet get upset at the choices we make...the carni and piranha are gonna get 'balanced' cause they are just too popular, plain and simple...cause neither are overpowered nor overshadow other weapons in their respective classes....they arent even the best in their classes....

anyway, i'm a gamer, so i'll adjust

on a side note: it's ironic, when i started a thread called 'stop weekly balances' cause i felt they were getting out of hand and messing up the game more than fixing it, the majority of people disagreed with me....glad yall finally starting to see the light

You know? I have never got upset over a nerf before. That changes with this upcoming change. Carnifex doesn't deserve to be nerfed. The other pistols needs to be buffed. The piranha is terrible on some classes because of its accuracy. Bioware needs to think this through. Maybe players use these guns because these are probably the most efficient guns there are while everything else is terrible on difficulties like gold and platinum??

OMFG WTF LMFAO!! Bioware is digging his own grave.. Nerfing weapons because they are used to much makes no sense... Nerf a gun if its game-breaking not because its used much... If this is gonna be krysea, typhoon all over again bioware is gonna lose a LOT of people

I mean at least the typhoon is still somewhat usable.......lets just see what happens. If they nerf the piranha really bad like damage + rate of fire + accuracy then im pretty much done. Carnifex.............I'm not even going to go there. It didn't even do anything wrong.:?

It's like this, it's either do the work trying to fix seven guns or just nerf one gun. One takes hours and effort and one takes minutes and you get a longer lunch break. Do the math.

I used to use the Phalanx X a lot, but since my skill at aiming improved (...and I got the Carnifex X) I started using the Carnifex on some classes where I can aim carefully, like the asari adept w/stasis or a cloaked Shadow. The Phalanx is still my backup weapon for some other classes.

In some ways, the Phalanx is still a bit better since you can quickly get shots onto the target and it's more forgiving of misses.

I guess that's next.

But then it would go like this:
Nerf Piranha people switch to reegar
*Bioware looks at popularity poll and decides to nerf reegar
Nerf Reegar people switch to.....claymore or GPS??
*Bioware looks at ^^^^ and decides to nerf them. Badly.
Then basically all the good rare guns suck compared to the uncommon weapons while the rare ones were harder to get. If weapons are rare, at least make them rare-worthy.

The Piranha absolutely deserves a nerf, almost as much as the Wraith deserves a buff.

Those who say that the Piranha problem is a problem with the GI are in la-la land. While the GI makes the Piranha much better, that character does so with every weapon. I've equipped the Piranha on every class and most of the characters within each class, and it's always better than every other shotgun and most other guns in general.

The Piranha turns any class into a boss killer without any major drawbacks. It's light, it fires fast, it does enough damage per shot that you don't have to reload between non-boss kills, and even with just a smart choke and no other accuracy bonuses it can be effective out to medium range. Even its recoil isn't a significant factor given that the Piranha playstyle generally allows shooting from the hip.

For the record, I've never called for a "nerf" and I'm not doing so here; I'd rather that they buff other things to counter the Piranha's power. However, since the nerf is inevitable I feel compelled to address some of those who choose to outright lie...not that it really matters since Bioware has the logs to prove that something needs to be done to make other weapons better alternatives.

You're saying its OP because of a certain mod?? You don't judge a weapon based on mods......and not only that, it can't take out bosses that quickly UNLESS paired with mods and equipment. With the GI, it gives the Piranha a significant damage boost as well as the damage bonus from the proxy mine gives it the power to down bosses, not the weapon itself. Try using a piranha without any mods on a sentinel on gold and come back with your response. Most of the time, a GPS or claymore would do better with a sentinel.

The balance changes this week are.... underwhelming.
  • The locust is still terrible, although it might be silver viable now.
  • The viper now does more damage than my valiant III... does that make it gold viable? Possibly.
  • The incisor hasn't changed at all, only a 500% or more increase in damage or a MASSIVE recoil reduction would make it not utter crap.
  • The raptor is now officially light enough to be used on caster classes withough much of an issue.... I guess thats cool?

On the subject of next weeks balance changes... PLEASE DON'T!
The piranha is JUST FINE exactly where it is, it's a good weapon without being an overpowered weapon.
And the carnifex? Really? The carnifex hasn't been touched in 6 months and you're looking at changing it now? It too is fine EXACTLY where it is, the reason it's "obscuring" other weapons in it's class is for 2 reasons:
1. There are only 8 pistols and 3 of them are ultra rare, and since I guess SMG's could be considered the same class since they're also light weaons designed for casters or as sidearms and there are only 6 of them and one of them is an N7 promotional.
2. All of the other pistols/smg's are either crap, roo rare to reasonably level, or (in the case of the talon/scorpion/paladin) too heavy to use on a caster class.

So if you don't want the carnifex to overshadow other weapons in it's class TRY MAKING THOSE OTHER WEAPONS BETTER! It really wouldn't take that much, just reduce the weight on the ultra rare pistols, and buff the damage a bit for the eagle and all of the uncommon/rare SMG's/pistols. Then the carnifex woudl no longer "obscure" them.

. Although we haven't touched the Carnifex since ship, we feel it is obscuring too many other weapons in its class and needs some small adjustments as well.

Infiltrator guns buffed this week, the main caster weapon nerfed next week. :crying:  No buffs to underpowered powers, only for guns?

Casters continue to fall furthur and furthur behind the shooty classes.  Maybe you could buff the acolyte to have a shorter charge time as squishy classes like the human adept really can't use it except on small maps with narrow corridors.

You're welcome to misrepresent my argument.  It's a free country after all.  What I said was that a smart choke - available to anyone who's been buying packs long enough to level a Piranha - is enough accuracy bonus to compensate in large part for the Piranha's only true drawback.  And why would anyone play the game without putting on their weapon mods?  It's not like they go away after use.  Talk about a dumb argument...

As for the GI skills, I say they make every weapon in the game viable and they make many weapons awesome.  This is not something unique to the Piranha.  And proximity mine hardly counts since I can get similar bonuses with any character if someone on the team is using any debuff.

And yes, I've used the Piranha (with mods - I'm not stupid) on gold with a sentinel and enemies go down just fine.  Certainly not as fast as when using a GI but extremely effective, and yes, more effective than most other guns.

Agree on the consensus regarding a possible Carnifex nerf. There is no competing weapon in it's class, of course people are going to use it more. Isn't the entire point of a rare vs. uncommon weapon that the rare should be better as it is more difficult to obtain?

If it's overused, it is because there are no viable alternatives. Give us a rare version of a modified phalanx. or rare version of the Talon - I would happily use those more often. What next, nerf the Paladin because people start using it instead of the Carnifex?

Makes no sense.

dont nerf guns because they are popular, nerf guns when they are overwhelming like the krysae the fisrt time it came... so overpowered

Nerfing a good(but not overpowered) gun will only damage the experience.

buff cr4ppy URs or N7s. (sad face) to receive finally a n7 or and UR card to find a bad weapon that underperforms... thats why none uses those weapons.

you make good the argus or typhoon and i will probably start to use them.. too much will have to change the crusader to start to use it
