I wouldn't.
How do you make ME4 a sequel without invalidating ME3?

Well... In my opinion ME3 has already done a great job invalidating itself. So they can go about the ME4 sequel however they wish as far as I'm concerned. Just don't make it a prequel.

But then I guess a prequel or side story would inherently be as invalid as ME3 would with a sequel.

Too bad Mass Effect isn't Zelda.

They could do something like in DA:2 and either you enter your saves or have 3 separate pre built backgrounds. After that, then if they set it far enough fwd where and have where if you chose destroy or synthesis, something happened ( such as Shep wasn't able to control them or synthesis didn't work and so everything wasn't put back together) or if you destroyed and same thing. Then they could take and if you chose refuse, set it before the next cycle killed the reapers and you have the making for a rebuild civilization type thing. At that point it can give a nod to Shep destroying the reapers, or the next cycle hasn't had its great war with the reapers and then adds a nod for Shep inspiring them from info from the archive.and it might work ok.
The best bet, I think, would be to set it finding a unmarked relay that took them to a new galaxy and branched out that way. Its always been one of my questions, did the reapers do this to all galaxies? Could there be a way for the ME universe to travel to another galaxy? You get the hint. It would give them some of your familiar races ( a crew volunteering to do a possible suicide run through a unknown relay) and enter into new species, worlds and so forth. Also, if there was a relay to such, then there may be more out there in this new galaxy and it opens up a lot of possibilities. Maybe even have a race we know that went through eons ago and developed differently then in Shep's. They could also have them go through it and it only works one way. Hence why no one in the ME world new it was out there....so many ideas and new directions to go! I know it kind of sounds Omega 4 relayish but if fined tuned, I think it could really work for a new expansion to the ME universe without impacted as much on your choices in ME3.
