You need atleast 2 hard drives, one of them needs to have relatively fast writing speeds (talking about 1080p here, if you go higher you need even more speed), power to spare and a license for Fraps/DXtory.
Recording full games is not exactly plug and play for most people.

The PC Master Race do not pay for anything.

You can use MSI Afterburner to record for free.Rubios wrote...

Also there isn't a real reason for someone to record over 1280x720, at least not the casual vid maker. You get the HD stamp on youtube and don't have to worry as much about hard disk write speed.
BTW I find that MP is much more difficult for my poor computer to record. I think MP must spend too much time writing to the page file or something

I wouldn't give administrator privileges to software from "unknown" sources on my machine, there is more money in my bank account than what a Fraps license is worth.

Well, you are right.
I'm kind of a do-it-right-or-don't-do-it-at-all guy, but I guess 720p with afterburner works too.

If fraps doesn't work out, then I recommend MSI Afterburner and to follow the advise given (e.g., 720p, separate hard drive, lower than max quality). Try setting the frame limiter to something above ideal (e.g., above 60 FPS). I also made a tutorial for converting RAW .avis to .mp4s without too much real loss to quality for a friend so that uploading to YouTube becomes more manageable (compression of about 15:1MB) that I can post or PM if that's helpful.

I use to pc game a ton. I dominated games like Halo on its hardest difficulty on pc. On Xbox I struggled a lot. Heck, I don't think I have beat them on Xbox past the hard difficulty.

Only 10 year olds would honestly prefer to buy an XBOX or PS3 over building a nice computer.

However I might be biased based on the fact I play PC much more than consoles so naturally switching to console controls is a steep learning curve while a pro console gamer probably wouldn't have aiming problems.

while i agree that for FPS and 3PS gaming, PC controls are far superior (i used to game a lot on PC when i was younger -- late teens / early 20s).... but now i have lots of things to spend the bulk of my money on. Kids. Car payment, preschool tuition, the roof over my head, etc. Alas, i'm not sitting in a position with plenty of money. I decent gaming PC is going to cost you at least several hundred dollars. I'm going to have a TV anyway, we have kids, we watch movies. The console is far better for my kids to play on too - plus i like sitting in my recliner with my surround while i play my games. If i had the money to blow i'd definitely buy a PC setup. it'd be great. and a second recliner or second surround system - or the means to hook it up to my current (and don't say headphones.. can't hear the baby monitor).
So your statement may hold true.... but only half true. I think it might be accurate to say late teens through mid-late 20s would prefer to buy a PC over an xbox or PS3 as a gaming system because it is inarguably a superior experience as far as control and graphics in the types of games that demographic wants.... and they have the disposable income and don't really have to buy both..... so rather than it looking like this:
xb0x/ps3 ----------- 10 yrs old ------- PC ---->
it looks more like this: Xbox/ps3 --------- 10 yrs old --------PC ------whenever you have family/kids -----console---->
for most people.
