So every time you die, the game over screen shows you what would have happened after your death, based on your previous choices.

you die in act 1

"The champion persihed before escaping lothering, so his family died. Carver escaped and became a bodyguard, but got killed by foreign invaders"

you die in act 2

"after your death, Aveline tried to arrest Isabella. Aveline died but the city guard arrested Isabella so she was sentenced to death.  Meredith deported your family and Varric vanished.

or

"Without your influence, the Dalish clan sneaks into Merril's house and slaughters her. When the Arishok started his attack, Sebastian gathered an army, but died in the siege of Kirkwall. King Alistair marches over Kirkwall with an army and the coming battle will decide the fate of the city."

you die in act 3

"Meredith and Orsino got married and everybody was happy you died" :D

What do you think of this? It could be a nice little feature if the game over screens didn't spoiler forthcoming events of the plot.

I don't really see the point, but I guess I don't care either way.

At first, I was like: Nah.
Then, I was like: Hmmm.
Now, I'm like: Sure. Why not?

It's an interesting idea, but I think it'd make it seem too much like, that's it, game over, no point continuing playing because this is what happens. Also, I imagine it'd get annoying seeing the same screens over and over again. Unless they come up with dozens and dozens of different screens, which would just take up far too much development time that could probably be better spent elsewhere.

I like this idea. It's fresh and new. I like it a lot more than Call of Duty's: "LOL REMEMBER TO DODGE GRENADES BOI!". Feels like the game is talking down to you.

Well, about these games? Much better than just "Game Over". Good thinking OP.

But without this,  you WILL be seeing the SAME Game Over screen every time. And few texts doesn't takeaway so much from development time.

I think I died like 7-8 times in total on Normal difficulty. You strap 20-25 game over screens (to account for permutations of choices) and probably not everybody is even going to see them all.

Have ti be real careful to not spoil anymore of the story afterwards if you did that.

agree, that's why these screens would create alternate storylines not related with the actual plot.

"Varric was devastated after your death and became a wanderer. He went to the deep roads, accidentally shot himself on the foot with Bianca and his screams awakened an Old God. Epic fail."

That sounds like a lot of zots for something most people will never see. Even playing on hard, I never had a full party wipe.

Depends on how well their done, if it's just text then no but maybe a scene maybe... actually no, I don't see it working.

I like the idea, but it could take a lot of those screens, i think it's better if they set those up in special events.

e.g. Hawke dies during the siege of Kirkwall in the duel against the Arishock or dies in the battle when he/she refuses the Arishok's duel proposal "Kirkwall becomes a Qunari city, King Alistair marches over Kirkwall with an army and loses. Being forced to retreat, Krikwall becoms a tactical key point in the upcoming Qunari invasion."

Fallout 2 had these, and Fallout 1 had variations of these, too. But I remember the ones in Fallout 2 the most because the game over screen was specifically tailored to where you were in the Main Quest when you died.

It's just a background splash, some text and a bit of voice over. Depending on how much variation in the voice overs, it might be a surprising amount of work. But it shouldn't be technically impossible. Fallout was released in 1997, after all.

Would be nice to have it included, though it wouldn't be a big deal if it's not.

Most people are fairly rubbish, I think.  Though I suppose it could be just me.

But it doesn't really seem worth the zots to me either.

Perhaps it's an incentive to not die! :D

Actually, I really like this idea if it's used like this. Not the actual plot, but something to do with a random companion and something random happening to them after you die. Interesting, entertaining, but not spoilery,

Death should be removed from games completely - it's an antiquated concept and very few people have tried to fix it.

LoTR:Online is the only game I know of that gets rid of the tired convention.

There are more ways to "lose" than death - and "defeat" during a mission could mean retreat - and that could lead to a bevy of storytelling options.

Pretty cool, but that stuff takes time. Have you heard of the amazing scene they had scripted for the OGB in DAO? If your (female) Warden romanced Alis, and was friends with Morrigan, they had this amazing heart-wrenching scene all written out. They would have done it, but they needed that time for something else.
They looked at it and thought, many people who get this game don't finish it. (Apparently only around 40% of gamers finish a given product on average, which seems low to me.) And if they DO finish it, will they finish it with a female character? Will that character romance Alis? Will they also befriend Morrigan? Too few would see it, spend this time elsewhere.

Now, the deaths would be more common, but it would still mean spending time and resources on something that isn't a given.

mmmmm.

I think it's not really ideal enough to bother with the effort.

The concept are cool, but I think it would perhaps take up too much zots. If they did do those screen though, I could imagine myself accepting that game over as canon and starting a new characther.

Could definitely get behind this idea if the proposed alternate realities were ridiculously done like this. One of the things I love the most about the series is the little unexpected LOLs that crop up throughout. Harrowmont's epic fail. Alistair/Wynne and The Talk. Merrill saying "No S*$%, there I was". Reminds me of the now-defunct Dungeon Runners (god I loved that game...wait...BW, can we have a Bling Gnome?). I like a healthy dose of funny with my doom and gloom and world-saving, thank you. This could be a fun way to incorporate more. Image IPB
