BioWare have never been too bad at having fun characters to keep the mood up, thus making the sadder moments in their games have more impact.

That said, I do think this is important for BioWare to consider when making DA3. There is a reason Alistair was such a great companion, his optimistic side really nicely juxtaposed with the haunting soundtrack in DA:O.

Merril seems to be playing a similar role for me in DA2 (still playing DA2).

Jim Sterling from the Escapist did an excellent opinion video outlining this (Warning: Very Strong Coarse Language):

I really hope DA3 manages to maintain a good strong sense of fun and optimism so when there are sad moments, the sadness is emphasized against the backdrop of dynamic characters.

I don't want it so much that they overdo it. This isn't Space Quest where the goal was to be silly.

There's a balance to achieve the right effect. If they want the game to appear dark, it only needs a dash of humor. If they want it to be like Siege Hard 2: Siege Harder (MotA joke), it would use a good helping of it. If they want the whole thing to appear tearfully tragic, they'd go for film school independent film noir emo depression all the way through (and the tragedy would be for ever making the thing in the first place).

Please keep "Sarcastic" as a dialog option. I loved my Sarcastic Hawke

I'm a very cynically sarcastic person irl, so I would love for more sarcastic dialogue in the game.

Just about every dramatic moment in DA2 had Merill, Isabella, Varric or Hawke making a joke. It'd be nice to have something in the game that can be taken seriously without a quip from the backseat drivers.

That was not the intention of the post. I am talking about, when sad things happen, they are sadder when people were previously happy - you know?

Sarcasm is also quite charming in a way when done well in a game.
