The threat needs to entirely ideologically based. No need for warfare, but more of an intellectually focused game with exploration and advanced new technologies similar to a technological singularity.

What possible menace or threat could possibly be as dreadful? Or does the next installment focus even more on characters, with any antagonist\\threat feeling secondary. Characters are their strong suit afterall.

Easy, Menace from another galaxy entirely like Andromeda which is 1/3 - 1/2 bigger than our own galaxy.

set the game 300-700 years in the future give or take.

Tech has significantly advanced more specifically Space travel.

Opponents wouldn't have to top the reapers technologically but just use a form of technology so obscure it remains interesting.

Opponents would have to have some sort of purpose or reason for what they are doing making the main plot a bit more sustainable and less convoluted than the reapers plot ( in other words, Reducing the chance of the game consistently being riddled with plot holes).

alternative could be inter-dimensional as theres supposed to be 10+ dimensions that would certainly be interesting although it might be a bit .... difficult for those who arent well versed in science too understand but a codex would be pretty good for that as it explained things rather well.

All in all, I dont think the enemy has to top the reapers but more or less just be interesting enough to be thought provoking IN THE BEGINNING (if its at the end again so help me god.) by that I mean, What are they? who are they? what do they want? why are they here...what do we need to do...

stuff like that.

but like I said you dont need to top the reapers just make the opponents interesting enough to keep the fans hooked.

ME4:

new protagonist
Cmdr MacCasey - a former artist driven by destiny and truly incorruptible due to his/her integrity.

New weapons:
- Speculation cannon
- head cannon
- Thresher Maw Cannon

Enemies:
- The Speculators - a terrifying race of unknown origin who seed the galaxy with speculations and then arrive every 75k Years to harvest all life for unknown reasons - speculate away.
- Dinosaurs - because why the F*ck not?

you missed out "artistic" before integrity :)

Where did you hear this, exactly?

Because you do not sound like someone who knows very much at all about science.

I would say the Flood, from Halo or the Necromorphs from Dead Space.
Or sentient stars/planets like in the Fifth Element.

Well this post is ironic.

I dunno man. ME3 kinda goofed when it tried to do this. I love a good thoughtful scifi plot element, but I love shooting things too. :P

I adore the Fifth Element, but I dunno if that brand of mysticism really belongs in Mass Effect. Although, as the Doctor would put it, the universe is ridiculous.

I don't think they should add in any elements that would radically transform the setting. It is one of the reasons why I'm hoping there won't be a Synthesis sequel.

I personally hope the next installment let's you pick your race. Because if we're playing human, the question isn't what will top the reapers? The question is how will you top Shepard? That's what I'm worried about most.

If the rumors about a fan panel at PAX were true, Bioware *may* have been exploring that option.

Of course, don't forget to take that with a dash of salt.

Of course, any news about the next ME installment will be taken with less then a dash of salt.

It will be about a war with the Yahg I've always thought. The are perfect to take over control after the Reaper-war.

NECROOOOO.....wow (been a lot of that going on lately)

They shouldn't try to top the Reapers. And they don't need to. They just need to make the threat completely different.

Same thing with the protagonist. It doesn't need to be a generic space marine destined to become Space Messiah and save all life in existence. It just needs to be different.

Stakes raised: this galaxy exists within the bauble dangling from a cat's collar, and the collar somehow starts approaching an incinerator or a trash compactor. As a bonus lore addition, the Reapers were actually mechanical ticks grasping on the cat's coat, making its fur the real "darkspace".

The obvious argument against it is the choice of either a non-voiced protagonist or a lot of the resources going into just different voicing. But would it work with the same voice just getting processed on the fly to produce the various voice effects? You'd still need some separate lines recorded for different races and backgrounds, but no extra VAs.

ME4 doesn't need to match ME1-3 in scope of galactic danger the Reapers offered, It just needs a threat to the player's/main character's interests. It could be as simple as war, revenge, survival, etc...
