Bioware have already said that ME3 was the end of the shepard trilogy, in a new Mass Effect game there will be no Shepard (which i think is a good idea) i'd love to play as Captain Bailey during the events of the ME trilogy.
well bioware also said, that our choices would matter and that there won´t be A-B-C endings in me3.
saying something and doing it, are 2 different things.
the last scene gives the best hint ... "The child asks to be told more, and the Stargazer replies that there is time for one more story."
in addition, none of us knows, what the future dlcs will bring. maybe we will get some kind of "workaround" that opens up a canonized ending to build upon. a workaround that makes refusal THE option to continue the series.
games without shepard being the protagonist are possible. but shepard is mas effect. the new hero would suffer from the "whatwouldsheparddo" desease. plus we would miss the crew.
my tip:
write yourself our of this latrine, open up new options for one existing ending (refusal) to be a transition point to the sequel and finish the series with style and shepard.
anything else will not go well.

So much common sense distilled in this post. Agreed completely.

As I wrote before. KOTOR didn't have any of the characters that we know and love, but it worked anyway. Why can't it work with Mass Effect?

Yeah not gonna happen, the endings are what you get with the EC...exapnsions will be if the happen based on those endings unless it's a prequel. So to all those who hate the ending might I suggest to move onto another franchise or accept them as they are.Although refusal could be an option to expand upon it's never gonna happen.

Shepard's story was of the reaper war. It's time to move on. Let another "hero" hit the lights.

the mass effect universe is relatively boring 4000 years ago ... some minor struggles (compared to the reapers) and few space faring species. no humans .. i personally have no problem playing as an alien - but many people do. all in all - less diversity.
there will allways be this little scratching feeling, telling you, that the storyline will not end as you want - no matter how hard you try.
kotor had a completely different starting point. we knew how it would end - ewoks dancing around a campfire with han and leia finally in love and the farmboy rebuilding the once proud jedi order. in short, sunshine and bunnies. we all knew it would end well and therefore a prequel was not out of question.
farmboy, vader and the smuggler are tied to star wars, yet those characters were build into an existing universe - mass effect is the opposite ... the mass effect universe is build around shepard and the storyline.

Shepard's story ends with ME3. At it's end he is either alive and retired, being a celebrated hero (I just can't imagine him coming back after the things he's gone through), dead and being a hero or being the overmind of the reapers.
Shepard's story was of the reaper war. It's time to move on. Let another "hero" hit the lights.
why not ... shepard finally acheaved his/her goal - the defeat of the reapers. but the galaxy is not a safe place. new conflicts, a mostly destroyd infrastructure. rebuilding efforts everywhere, upstarting newcomers who want to take advandage of the weakened galactic society.
there would be a lot to do for shepard. it maybe "small scale" work but in this overall weakened scenario it could have a huge impact.
like i said before ... a new hero will have a bad time, since the new hero will not have shepards stature, charisma, history ans acceptance. and in addition, the new hero would feel a little bit forced on the player. bad conditions for an upstarting hero.
The Milky Way galaxy is a big place. There is a place for stories that does not directly connected to the trilogy.
yet it would play in the same universe - council races, omega, protheans ... everything will still be there.
it is not impossible but in this case, you can start a fresh franchise without the (story)tail, limiting your story telling.

because you decide for control, and thats your good right as all others have the right to do choose the ending they like, and it´s fine that you choose the totalitarion dictatorship and call it freedom, thats what all dictators do btw, but that doesn´t give you the right to dictate others that your view of the world is the ultimate truth.Eterna5 wrote...

Shepard is dead. The devs even went out of their way to point out that the "alive" ending could very well be a last breath. Whatever this new game is, those who buy it will be playing as someone new.
tbh if you ever saw someone die, this wasn´t a last breath! and why the hell call a file "shepard alive" when she/he isn´t?
Pretty much this destroy he lives because its the only ending that makes alick of sense concerning how shepard woudl do things
Paragons don't pick genocide when other options are available. Destroy is fundamnetally renegade.
Thats only true for Renegade Control not Paragon Control.

Think about it, thanks to the DLC we learned of the creaters of the reapers themselves and what the galaxy was like under their reign. Now that the reapers are gone (and shepard is either dead or retired), what's to stop them from trying to regain controle once more?
To be honest this is one of the most steriotypical directions bioware could take the series, but lets face it the set up is there. '9-9 in which case the new hero would have to try to stop that from happening.

I can't choose any option. If ME4 is the sequel to ME3, there should definitely be a new main character, but Shep has to live as well. I want my Shep in a cameo. If he's dead in ME4, well, EA can forget about my money right away.

I agree, if Call of Duty and Halo can do it Mass Effect series can do it. I would pay for all of them.Dmthoth wrote...
I belive, 'Trilogy' was just for Marketing//
when they made ME1, they didn't have any plan about trilogy's ending..
It's not a trilogy. there was no 'plan'.
That's why ME2 feels so empty and isolate.
well, we can say, ME1, 2, 3 was First chapter of Trilogy.
And now we will make 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9!
YEAY!!
