I think that is the biggest reason why you don't see spears often in fantasy RPGs.

Axes can largely use many of the same animations as swords, but spears and other polearms would require different animations in order to look right.

They just need to play some dynasty warriors and they'll see what they need to do with the animations for spears and pole arms.
