I will start by saying that my only experience with the wheel is with DA2, so I don’t know if ME’s wheel is any different from how it was implemented in DA2.

Ok, a lot of complaints are that people were surprised by what the voiced PC actually says in comparison with what is written to choose from on the wheel. Also, while the blue, purple, or red choices determine personality, they also limit what can be said.

So how about something like this:

The three color options still determine the personality, but you can choose within each of them exactly what you want to say by having a drop down menu or a branch with maybe 3 options, sort of how the investigate side of the wheel works.

Like this:
-Diplo
-Sarcastic
-Aggressive (I click on aggressive)

Which opens up:
Aggressive Response 1
Aggressive Response 2
Aggressive Response 3

Not only would this give more choices and control over what the PC actually says, it could pinpoint the personality better, maybe Aggressive 1 is the PC simply being direct in their response, and 2 is them saying something evil, etc.

This could also work with the heart options and give control over how the romance progresses or better define the relationship.

Click on heart option:
Response 1: I love you
Response 2: Just trying to get laid
Response 3: Let’s take things slow

^ Crappy general examples that are just showing the tone behind the responses, but I hope my point is getting across.

Anyway, this might mean more effort for Bioware, especially for the voice actors and writers, but if it didn’t affect cost and resources too much it might be something to consider.

What does everyone else think? Opinions? Ideas?

Works for me, although I'd personally wanna lose the heart icon just to make things a little more difficult, I like a good challenge LOL.

The problem with this is you're basically saying "just add more options," as if BioWare only put in three choices out of spite and not very real logistical and financial limitations.

... I actually really like this idea! :D

But to clarify, is this what you mean? Instead of getting three dialogue options to respond with, you have icons that depict tone (diplo, sarcastic, aggressive, romantic) and after selecting the tone you want, a tree will open up with three responses that match that tone?

Because that would certainly add more flavor and flexibility to the dialogue wheel for me.

Yes, that is what I mean. Image IPB

No, I'm not dissing them or saying that the limited options were out of spite, that's why I mentioned resources at the end. I'm not saying add more options for the sake of adding options, but trying to think of a way to improve upon the wheel that will pinpoint personality better and offer a wider variety of responses.

Then I agree, it would be neat to try! Although, I understand Maverick's point as well. Regardless, no harm endorsing something you would like to see! XD

First reaction.  It's interesting.  Decide on a feeling and then decide on the information-exchange aspect of conversation.  Here's the emotional reaction to what I've heard...here are the words I will form.  It seems cool. Feels too easy.   I wonder what the problem with it is...

Not going to happen and wouldn't work. Far too many lines of dialogue for any given response. Up to nine lines for any given response, not including investigate or specialty options, is just over-the-top and doesn't truly address the problems of the dialogue wheel or the voiced protagonist. It's like threading a needle with a shotgun.

I really just wanted to be able to agree or disagree with someone in any tone. I could diplomatically point out something that in DA2 could only be said with the aggressive tone.

I already had this idea when DAII first landed /hipster

It would require literally three times as much VO work for the protagonist though.

Doing it for every dialogue choice would be a lot of effort, yeah

But in a lot of cases all these lines of dialogue will already have been written if they're using the same dominant tone stuff as they did in DA2.  In which case I can't see a good reason why the player shouldn't be allowed to choose
