Katana: What can I say? It just has terrible damage output for its weight.
Eviscerator: I'd rather use the wraith
Scimitar: I honestly love it, but it just doesn't do enough damage.
Geth plasma shotgun: Doesn't fire fast enough, but it's still (in my opinion) the best shotgun in the game.
Claymore: It's basically a sniper. If i wanted to snipe, I would be using a sniper, not a shotgun.
Disciple: Not enough damage, but it's very light, which is nice.
Graal spike thrower: (see claymore)
Reegar carbine: Too low ammo (for me, at least) and too short range.
Wraith: I would actually use that before the Piranha, honestly.
Crusader: (see Wraith)
Piranha: It shoots quick, has good enough damage, but terrible accuracy. In other words, it's the kind of weapon I would use with an up-close character. So yeah, it's just the best gun for that specific situation. If I was going for ranged, I would use the Crusader, or mid-range, I'd go with Wraith.

I only use the Piranha on characters that have an accuracy buff, like the Turian soldier or the Geth in hunter mode. With that accuracy buff, smart choke, the light weight, fire rate and the high damage output, it is the best dps that can be achieved compared to any other shotgun and it can even be used at respectable range.

I don't use the Claymore. Too heavy and I prefer to have at least three shots in case I miss.

Geth Plasma Shotgun is one of my favorite shotguns because you can charge it, and it can hit at long ranges too. The only thing I dislike is the weight, but that's not a problem on the classes I use it on.

Graal Spike Thrower.. I don't use it, because the projectiles are pretty slow and it makes it pretty hard to hit moving opponents at anything other than point blank range, especially online.

Disciple, I love. It's kind of weak for higher difficulties, but its weight and fire rate make it an awesome weapon that even the N7 fury can use. And the stun is great and even works on brutes and stuff. The accuracy is good too. The only thing that kind of kills it is the reload speed... The Katana easily beats it in that regard, and, 4 rounds instead of 5 is also kind of a drawback.

Reegar Carbine I don't use, because it lacks range. I love being able to shoot and hit things at all distances without having to switch weapons every time. Good weapon for vanguards however, but, due to the glitch I rarely use vanguards.

Wraith, I prefer the Eviscerator because of three shots.

Eviscerator, great balance between damage, amount of rounds and reload speed. Firing rate slightly low for my taste.

The unmentioned Katana.. I LOVE this shotgun. Firing rate is perfect, not too slow and not too fast. Weight is good, Damage is respectable for its weight, and reload speed is perfect. Put smart choke on this thing and it'll be awesome. Not really viable for higher difficulties though, but I still love it.

Scimitar... I dunno what to do with this. Way too weak for my taste. The rate of fire and large clip size can make up for that, but it's better to just use a pistol, assault rifle or an smg instead of using this.

Crusader.. I like to call this the sniper shotgun. You have to be so accurate with it to do damage, that it's better going for something else if you want a close range weapon, especially if your aim sucks. If you want to play mid to long range, this is a great weapon, but you have to play it as a sniper without scope. I personally rarely use it, but, when I used it, I did like it. Almost everything is good on it. Problem is, it's so damn heavy and is too accurate for a shotgun.

So, you have a Claymore, a Geth Plasma Shotgun, a Graal Spike Thrower, a Disciple, a Reegar Carbine, a Piranha, a Wraith, and a Crusader. All gold plus the ultra rare and promo shotguns.

Why are you using the Piranha?

From before nerf:
1. Semi-automatic shotgun.
2. High performance against armor.
3. High DPS.

Claymore -> good against boss enemies -> high damage, but low fire ratio.
GPS -> lags = good luck with particle ammo. Lots of misses, weapon non-reliable, but if host is good, weapon is nice.
Graal -> another particle shotgun. I was ineffective with it.
Desciple... LOL? Asari stripper on stage can use it to make more interesting performance. Swarmers, beware!
Reegar Carabine -> Banshee likes me with that gun. Close distance needed to engage targets sometimes is equal to space magnets.
Wraith -> 2 bullets in clip? Really? Eviscerator was better... on Silver, because on Gold there were many better shotguns.
Crusader... well... I'm better with Saber AR.

Well, lately I've been taking the Graal and Claymore out for a spin, and I've really started to like them. I also stopped using the Geth Plasma Shotgun because it used to be all that I ever used and I grew tired of it, but the gun itself is great. I may take it out again sometime. I'm a big fan of the Reeger too, have been since it came out. The rest of the shotguns just don't seem worthy on Gold.

That being said, I use the Piranha on certain classes because it does just about everything - low weight, high damage, crowd control, no projectile lag, etc. It's nice, when using a Battlemaster, to be able to charge into a group and keep the enemies stunned while shooting them, and to be able to actually kill them before having to reload.  It's also light enough that I can use it on a Shadow and keep a decent cooldown whie still having a great anti-boss weapon along with the melee blade.

The problem that most of the other shotguns run into is either just not enough damage, or just too slow of a fire rate. I just think of Phantoms when I pick a shotgun. If I miss with this, (or in some cases, even if I score a headshot...) will I have another chance to shoot before I get stabbed? The answer with most shotguns is no.

I agree with a Wraith buff, too. I'm not sure what it is, but when I use the Wraith I never feel like I'm hitting hard enough. Even if I cloak and run up directly behind a trooper, sometimes it just doesn't do any damage, like the spray missed from point blank range. Coming from someone who just re-discovered the Claymore, and who is popping heads with it from distances that make my friends question why they aren't using it, why should I use the Wraith? Believe me, I want to.. but every time I try it, I'm left wondering why I did. It just doesn't feel right at all. If I can't kill a basic trooper in one shot reliably, the fact that it has 2 rounds per clip is just wasted because I have to use it to mop up the stray 1 or 2 health bars with that second shot instead of changing targets. I may as well have used a claymore.

The Crusader.. it's just too heavy to use on most classes. I'll take it for a spin on my Demolisher occasionally, but then I regret using a shotgun slot on something that isn't a good CQB weapon as soon as a phantom is on me. It's another gun that, believe me, I want to like.. it just doesn't fill any particular needs. I would use it occasionally if it was an Assault Rifle, but then it would be too close to a Saber and get ignored again anyway. It's not a bad gun, it just doesn't have a real purpose.

The Disciple just feels way too weak, nothing more or less to say there. I've probably only ever used it 5 times total since the game came out. Not a fan.

I think the Piranha is a great shotgun due to it being an automatic variant. It's just great to send rounds down range and watch enemies dumb enough to get close to me, die in a horrible mess.
It's just a fun shotgun all around, even after being nerfed twice and another nerf closing in.

I believe another part of it's appeal is the wieght, which allows most classes to use it without hampering cooldowns too much. So if the reasoning it is being nerfed is due to the weapon being "so popular", increasing the weight a little should do the trick.

Claymore with my infiltrators.
Scimitar... Doesn't even look remotely useful.
Disciple really doesn't seem useful at all. Or I just expected more out of it based on the description.
GPS and Graal... I find the Graal requires precision I don't have to dish out major damage.
Reegar Carbine... My power dependent classes would be too hampered by the weight, and as for my more ranged classes there are weapons more suited to their playstyle, though I have some Reegar builds running
Wraith... The rate of fire made me sad
Eviscerator- No.
Katana... Starter shotty. Wasn't all that useful on Bronze
Piranha... It's good. I don't use it anymore but its good.

A two shot reduction in the the Pirhana would definitely make me rethink, at the moment with the builds I like, not sure if I'm going to be decloaking in front of that Ravager and just wasting it with one clip.

Geth Plasma Shotgun, love it, will probably return to it if my builds are nowhere near as effective, am actually better with it on my favourite build (Male Human Infiltrator) because I hate mixing up weapon makes, I like to use either the Hurricane or Locust with Piranha and not the Geth Plasma SMG, which would actually suit me much better. Thing is, when you shoot something with the Piranha, you see it get shot, as opposed to the GPS and just see their health go down, it turns all the mobs into lil Nathan Fillions :D

I actually like the Disciple unlike the poster above, it's good for builds where I need a weapon with a relaible knockback and it's very light, when I use it for a character, I'm not using it for sheer damage output, just a, let me get the hell outta here gun and it works very well, the damage isn't all that bad either but I never rely on it for that.

The Wraith, I like it on the Destroyer only, get 3 shots and it's perfect like that for me.

The Reegar is a nice weapon, just lacking ammo capacity, great for Vanguards that use weapon damage and of course Vorcha that rely on it, not that I like playing as a Vorcha.

Oh, I actually did use the Crusader recently on my Demolisher since I don't have to worry too much about cooldowns. It's fun, though I keep an SMG as backup because it's not so great on really close enemies.

The Reegar's range is even worse than the Piranha's. The stream simply stops at a point and nothing happens beyond that point. With the Piranha you can at least hope one pellet will hit something.

Honestly, I don't use the Piranha much. I use it on my Shadow/Slayer and that's it because it's light and can finish off targets I didn't quite kill, recently removed it from my Destroyer in favor of a Reegar.

As to my other characters, I do use the other guns:
Wraith: Batarian Soldier, Human Vanguard - Relatively lightweight, while still packing a punch. Once I have this at a higher level, more characters will utilize it.

Reegar: Destroyer, VorSent - A bit heavy, but way better at ripping through shields/phantoms than the Piranha due to multiplier and no spread.

Claymore: Human Infiltrator, Geth Infiltrator, Drell Vanguard - Hard hitting preference to Piranha on characters with large temporary multipliers and hit and run tactics.

Graal: Krogan Vanguard, Batarian Sentinel - Niche shotgun, can't use it offhost effectively, and took me a while to get used to it, but actually quite good in certain situations. DPS feels a bit lacking if the shot is not charged sometimes, but is much lighter weight than Claymore, but can fill a similar role for me. High damage shot in hit and run, but requires forethought.

Talon: Drelldept, Asari Vanguard, Phoenix Adept/Vanguard - Not technically in the shotgun class, but amazing nonetheless. Generally prefer this for the light shotgun role over the Piranha because it can hit targets at range and still does amazing damage, both burst and over time. Downside, is that I cannot utilize berserker gear for increased melee damage along with it, so I use Piranha instead on characters that need to melee.

Disciple: No one, this gun just does not work. I've fired entire magazines trying to stagger with it to no avail, it hits like a wet paper towel as well. Unless it receives serious attention, I won't be touching it.

GPS: No one. Honestly, I just find this gun incredibly boring and I don't use it for that reason.

Crusader: No one. Don't like it, if I wanted something that accurate that hits that hard, I'd take a gun that can mount a scope. If I was on PC I might be able to use it more effectively, but I have issues going for headshots with crosshairs on an xbox controller, and I snipe all the time hitting headshots most of the time. The loss of the scope just messes me up somehow.

Used to use the Eviscerator on Phoenix Adept/Vanguard, Regular Human Adept, and Asari Vanguard, but those were replaced by the Talon after the addition of pistol ULM, just fit the role of light shotgun better.

The other shotguns are still quite useful, they just have different niches. I actually prefer the Talon to the Piranha for a light shotgun option, but I use the Piranha on my Shadow/Slayer because then I can use a Berserker V gear and get some extra melee damage, no option exists for pistol/melee damage on gear yet.

If the Piranha didn't exist, I'd probably swap to a Wraith or back to the Eviscerator for my Shadow/Slayer.

You want to know how bring the piranha in line with other shotguns?

Fix graal and gps projectile issues, double wraiths rof, and 30% to evisceratr (to keep wratih as the upgraded version) disciple needs a higher rof to make it more a quick punch wonder or instead get a lot more damage, its outclasses by the talon on incredible lots of levels

That should make it a hard time to consider taking a shotgun at all, before the piranha, i saw no real need unless i was hosting and wanted something brutal, then i always had a graal

*edit*
And send the crusader on a fat-away-farm trip

Claymore: My aim is less than stellar.
Geth Plasma Shotgun: Off host it's projectiles have wonky hit detection and no Piercing
Graal Spike Thrower: See Claymore
Disciple: Low damage. Desperately in need of a buff
Reegar Carbine: I use this too. It's damage is offset by having to be 2 feet from the enemy
Piranha: High DPS and high RoF offset by range. Don't get why it needs a nerf, really
Wraith: I wanna like this, but it's clipsize and slow RoF really hurt it.
Crusader: It weighs more than a truck.

I've been using the Piranha on my N7 Shadow because it makes up for her weaknesses as bosses stop her in her tracks and I refuse to spam Electric Slash and do average damage and annoy everyone around me. If I didn't constantly have to worry about how to deal with bosses on most classes then id use more guns.

When I use my Human Sentinel I could easily put any light weapon I want on him/her and it would make no difference as bosses fall due to Biotic explosions. It just so happens that the Piranha helps a lot of lacking classes compete with Destroyers and Geth Infiltrators. If the goal is to make the Piranha less interesting to use, then it wouldn't turn me to other shotguns, it would just turn me to other weapons in general. Worse yet, I may abandon certain classes all together if I don't have good weapon to balance the bad or broken things about the class.

Why is the 100% Incinerate damage on chilled targets still broken? Id argue there are more important things to worry about than making sure another weapon is undesirable.

Will my world end if the gun is less good? No, but I'm just giving my opinion.

Had a quick read through the comments and it seems that a majority of people are saying that they don't wantthe Piranha nerfed but if it has to be done then just increase the weight . Players then have to choose b/w firepower and cooldowns on the various characters. If you change the DPS then you are penalising all characters including the classes that rely primarily on weapon use v power use.

If he's going to reduce the amount of shots then the shots that are left need to be more accurate.

Nerf the shots, buff the accuracy. Coz lets face it, this gun can't hit jack even when ur standing 10 metres away

 It's about time I do a shotgun review ;)

Piranha
- Haven't used it ever since it's become popular. Too OP in the hands of GI, where being the highest DPS weapon it also maximize hunter mode's benefit, gold matches become bronze. I'd like more challenge.

Claymore
- My most used shotgun, don't even need any amps on gold since headshot can OSK almost every non boss unit. High DPS too, reload cancelling has good rythm. Only downside, phantoms have ridiculous DR against it on host. Not the easiest one to use but very powerful once you know it.

Wraith
- It's a good weapon generally, but some buffing would be nice imo, either damage or RoF or both, it's an ultra rare after all. It can't even compete with Claymore in some cases, not to mention piranha.

Reegar
- Almost forgot, another OP gun with proper amps (incendiary 4). Any boss down in two clips without using it on an infiltrator. That's about 6 seconds. And lets not mention the kroguard combo which I made a solo record.  A bit tweaking is required, or fix the incendiary bug maybe.

GPS, Graal
- Used to like GPS a lot, it's easy to used but more balanced. But the only advantage it has nowadays is easy phantom take down. Graal I feel like it doesn't kill bosses fast enough, shield or armor. otherwise good for getting some headshots. Overall, they suffer from being off host, and Given the guns listed above, I don't see a reason why one would use these.

Crusadar
- I can see its potential but would like to use it when it gets to higher level. Given its weight, rarity and single slug design, a bit buffing would make less complain about it.

Other than those, I don't recall anything else worth mentioning. Oh diciple, I'm disappointed by it, nice design, poor damage.

Personally I prefer weapons that require more precise aiming (nowadays, used to suck, prefer spamming powers). Weapon balanced should factor in player skills. And if you don't like aiming, there's always powers that can get the job done or assist you, stasis, ED, or direct damage smash. That's why I like this game it caters to people with different skillset.

It's nice to have something easy to use but it's also the most powerful weapon then there's something wrong. GPS is easy to use, but it doens't have the highest DPS at the same time, Claymore would do a better job at killing bosses, it was quite good the old days.

It's also nice to embrace the true power of a weapon once you've matered it, that's game progress. Anyone can pick up the piranha and "master" it in a few matches, not much improvement can be made. So yeah you answers your own question, because all other shotguns suck in front of Piranha (lightweight, high DPS, ease of use).

Eh, the gun shouldn't be touched. The gun is fine. It's the Incendiary bug with does that. Pretty apparent on the PPR as well.

I love it on Vorcha or Batarians that I can tank with. For some reason I only use Claymore with Krogans, not sure why. It's quick-firing and I don't need to scope the shot, just walk into the enemy.

I like the Claymore as well. I want to like the Eviscerator and Wraith, just something about them keeps me from using them a lot. They are great for recharge-conscious vanguards though. The Katana is too slow for how little damage it does (comparatively), the Disciple is not too strong but I get why it isn't (super lightweight, would be overpowered if damage came up too much), and the Scimitar is fun to roll through Bronze in but otherwise nah. Crusader probably takes the most skill to be really effective with. And the reegar is fun to melt things with.

Because it's the best close up damage weapon in the game. With all due apologies to Eric, Corey, John and the rest of the team, half the pistols and every AR in this game except the Harrier and Striker (on certain classes) are junk. garbage. trash. worthless. [insert adjective here] They are not worth platinum combat except as weapon platform back up weapons. The Piranha is a better assault rifle than the entire assault rifle line including the Harrier.

For the record I use the Graal and GPS on most of my Shotgun classes and occasionally pick the claymore for a Ksent Incendiary build or Ksol grenade build for uberstacking.

For the slot I would normally pick an AR, you can bet the Piranha will be taking that slot. I would also say the carnifex and Scorpion and talon, but since you're nerfing one and if I mention the utility of the others they'll get gimped, I'll defer.

PS: The Disciple, Wraith and Crusader have no business being on the same list as the rest.

Top 3 shottys I use are GPS, Parana and Claymore. All three highly depend on the situation weather CQC Glacier or Long range RIO. The Parana is usually only used as a backup weapon on my support classes. It is not my main weapon. I only use it for bosses. If im host usually roll with GPS.

Let's see...

1) It's one of the lightest shotguns so it's great for casters

2) DPS is so high that it puts almost all weapons to shame, bar maybe the reegar, the PPR or the Typhoon (not sure for the last 2) with a good class/consumable setup

3) Basically allows everyone to take out bosses quickly and easily with the weapon alone which is quite unprecedented

4) Its spread actually plays a lot in its favor and at mid range you can devastate clusters of enemies. It's also very predictable, so by aiming a bit on the side you can actually kill enemies at mid range by landing half of the pellets which is already more than decent DPS thanks to the ROF.

To sum up I see no reason not to use it if you play a class that can afford playing close to the enemies, even more so if you need low cooldowns, and a lot of classes can fall into this playstyle. classes with a lot of shields, damage resistance, vanguards, classes with good crowd control abilities. It's only bad if you deliberately try to use it at long range, which is stupid.

As for other shotguns :

- Claymore : it's the best shotgun for playing at long range but you need a class that can afford to take its weight.

- GPS : entirely different role more of a crowd control / DPS mix, good one but no penetration, and you have to play it on a character who can take the weight. Suffers from lag, and also at close range the Piranha does better.

- Graal : akin to the GPS but without the homing function. Also a bit lighter, still the same drawbacks.

- Disciple : stagger is unreliable, damage just doesn't keep up, accuracy is nothing mind blowing, it's light weight but nothing this gun has justifies a so low DPS. With a 100% stagger rate it MAY be interesting.

- Reegar : the one that is the closest to the Piranha, it can do better against bosses with the right setup however it's heavier and the range is limited which means the Piranha has the advantage over it because it can kill spawns of enemies thanks to its spread.

- Wraith : fills about the same role than the claymore but with less damage and less weight and a 2 round clip. It's OK but I find the claymore to be way better at it, more accurate and even though it's only one shot, it rarely leaves enemies alive. If I need low cooldowns and can afford to come close to enemies there is no reason to take this shotgun over the Piranha.

- Crusader : Haven't played with this one a lot especially since the buffs, so I can't say. Anyway it's very heavy and is designed for long range fights, completely the opposite of the Piranha. Thus no reason to chose it over the Piranha.

For me, it's more reasons NOT to use the others.
Claymore: slow reload times even when cancelled, costly if you miss, extremely heavy
Geth Plasma Shotgun: heavy, cannot use shredder mod for cover penetration - but probably my favourite shotty, so long as I bring something else for armour. However I still have to spec EVERYTHING into improving weapon weight
Graal Spike Thrower: Heavy, no shredder support, unwieldy to use
Disciple: practically useless because damage is in the toilet. Increase damage versus armour/barriers (a 'warp' gun), and/or make it's stagger stronger.
Reegar Carbine: no range (but heavy enough to make a secondary ranged weap difficult), eats through ammunition incredibly fast, requires camping an ammo box
Wraith: Same problem as Claymore - if second shot fired faster it would have way more appeal - also weight
Crusader: It's not really a 'shotgun', it's more like the Saber than the Claymore. No shrapnel and less shieldgate bypass

For Piranha, well, I'm actually not using that much now because of its limited range. It is supposed to be good for crowds of husks but when I try to use it that way only the front one seems to take damage, making it pointless.

I think the reason the Piranha has appeal is that, (1) it is incredibly lightweight. All weapons of similar weight may have excellent range but do FAR less damage. Also (2) if you can afford to get close to bosses (an infiltrator cloaking, or a team mate on distraction) you can spew out a lot of damage against armour when shredder mod is on. Without shredder mod, it is a lot less effective (practically unusable). Then (3) it's spread makes it more forigving of rapid-aiming - important since we can't 'pause' with the squad menu and open up the radar like we can in SP.
And finally, most importantly, (4) it's a BOSS KILLER. Many other weapons are better against mooks, which the Piranha does NOT handle as well. At higher difficulties, boss-killer weapons are NECESSARY, but they're not redily available. At Platinum, ALL YOU GET IS BOSSES. If you want people using less Piranha, provide weapons better at bringing down slow, but hardest targets. You can add a firing delay after the trigger (maybe a half second), or a charged shot, meaning it is not so great against your average tropper but will take down that frackin' Prime.

You could also automatically make the Piranha have a little less tug if you make it go the way of other powerful weapons and lower its ammo capacity. Touching it's damage, weight, or fire rate will probably end up killing the gun - certainly riling up users. Alternatively you could make the spread even wider, or remove the automatic firing.

I don't have a good aim, so the shotguns usually have too little ammo for me to hit stuff, however, when I am on my Salarian Engineer I take the piranha, close my eyes and pull the trigger. Something will have died when I need to reload, either the enemy, or the Salarian Engineer with the big shotgun. XD

I really think the disciple needs to stagger more than it does, and get a damage bonus against shields and barriers. It could fill the phantom-stunning niche nicely, and I'd actually consider taking it on my fury then.

for simple answer i need shotgun that has more clip to shot rather than 2 or 3, I'm sure that i will miss the target

i choose GPS, Graal, Scimitar

and Piranha as far I know has more clips and i love surprising enemy at close range

so if you can make Eviscerator/wraith added more clip (5 i hope) and increase the ROF I'm pretty sure that i will using that weapon again

for now Piranha are only viable option to me

Here's something to consider when tossing around balance ideas.

You can't just buff all weapons.  There is a concept known as a damage economy.  This works just like other economies.  If a company gives all their workers a raise, then they have to raise the price of the goods they are selling.  The new cost of the items means the workers all need raises to afford them which, then means the price of the goods have to be raised.  Inflation, in other words.

Similarly, if you need to keep a game challenging, you cannot just raise all the weapons because then all the enemies will require buffing.  Then we are caught in a viscous cycle of inflation again.  The trick is to keep the game challenging while ensuring all weapons have equal footing.  Common weapons for Bronze, Uncommon for Silver, and so on.

So, no...you can't just buff them all.  It's complicated and delicate.

Then give us some rare equivalents of the uncommon guns we love, or at least fix all the uncommon sniper rifles so that the mantis doesn't outclass them.
