I will preface this by also saying I am very fond of the GPS and Claymore.

I love the Pirahna because it looks cool, has a good rate of fire, and does good damage. Sometimes, it's fun to get right in an enemy's face and just tear them apart with several successive blasts, as opposed to either a) needing to charge up like the GPS or B) having one shot to make it count like the Claymore.

Plus, you can get some really wicked gore when you use it like I do. Image IPB

Claymore.

It has been argued to me many times that the Piranha is someones "go-to" weapon because its Burst and Sustained are soo much higher than anything else.
And then when I bring up the fact that the Claymore is incredibly more accurate and has a much longer range most points come up with the fact that it is a single shot weapon. Thusly to them, a single shot weapon is "weaker" which anyone who has used it would know otherwise.

On power classes it's a great light weight close range option. My fury and shadow both have good cooldowns and use it to clean up whatever's leftover after a biotic explosion or shadow strike. It stinks long range but it's supposed to. Working as intended.

On a GI the accuracy buff and smart choke make all my pellets hit in a tight spread. This means I can hit things from a massive distance. Not only can I shred armor/shields/barriers/health up close, I can take out ravagers from sniper nests. There is no downside. Why would I use a claymore? Too slow, too small of a clip. Why would I use a graal? Small clip and lag hurts it pretty bad. Why would I use a reegar? The range sucks (the downside a shotgun should have). The GPS is a decent second but the damage and RoF are inferior.

I just cannot reload cancel well. This is not needed for the piranha.

Simple: best DPS with low weight.

Before Piranha I was using the Claymore, but reload cancelling is a bother and without it the DPS is too low.

I use the piranha because it out-DPSes everything else and the bullet spread is easily mitigated by a smart choke and having at least an iota of skill. It truly is a faceroll weapon and it's versatile on any class you want to play.

I am in the process of writing a rather large document on how i would balance mass effect 3 MP right the way down to the gear bonuses. on the subject of shotguns i would say its because the pirahna is far to easy to use by comparison to other shotguns.

one of my suggested changes to the pirahna (and the most important) is to give it more recoil since it is way too easy to keep all that firepower on target.

Because it is automatic and lighter than the GPS. And it is fun! The ideal gun for my kroguard.

Because it's a good way for me to dip my feet wet in Platinum due to its power.
Have started to drop it though in favor of the Claymore.

The Piranha is also a good fit for a Batarian Soldiers Cooldown cycles. You fire Ballistic -> fire off the Piranhas clip -> Reload cancel with Ballistic blades = RINSE AND REPEAT FOR PROFIT!

Otherwise I prefer the Claymore and Graal. Piranhas kind of a ''I've just failed 10 games and I'm going to MURDER EVERY FRIGGING THING AS REVENGE!!'' Kind of weapon for me.

Sorry Derek, I already called shotgun. Get in the trunk with Chris. He won't bite...much. <_<

But since you asked nicely, I use the Pirahna only when I know that I'll need to churn out damage quickly and rapidedly, and on classes that can get an RoF boost ( I usually ignore accuracy boosts as they make shotguns... hilariouslyoverpowered.). This usually means I use it when I want to religate myself to boss fighting and have no other way to efficiently take them out (either in the form of biotic explosions, grenades, or Krogan Headbutts.).

If I'm focused moreso on taking out trash units, guarding allies, or are in a support role I go with lighter shotguns that churn out good damage, but not at the pirahna's rate.

So for a vanguard I'll go with the Wraith, the Krogan soldier picks up his trusty claymore, and the Paladin grabs the crusader for ALL RANGE MODE.

So if what you were looking for was my opinion of the pirahna in comparsion and what could be done to fix it? Keep its damage, weight, and fire rate intact in keeping with the games description, but lower its spare ammo capacity so you can't go long periods of time without grabbing ammo. This makes it efficient at sweeping through clustered enemies and large boss units, but not too powerful in that it can just be used for everything all the time.

Also its about time you looked at the Carnifex. Might I suggest a RoF reduction?

Its rate of fire and the fact that it is forgiving if you miss. Single-shot, or low RoF shotguns aren't very forgiving, and with so many things that cause screen shaking, I like having a gun that's user-friendly while still doing decent damage. It allows for more constant pressure, and of course, it is pretty beastly on the GI and Destroyer. I honestly don't feel it is out of hand on other classes, though. It's good, but not godly.

That said, I prefer using the Reegar on my Kroguard, as it melts everything with Incendiary ammo. I tend to use ARs more often on other classes, though.

I love the claymore, the gps and the piranha.

Nothing is as satisfying as oneshotting a phantom with the awesome stopping power of the claymore. The reload canceling dance is one of the most satisfying elements of the game to me, where one failed reload cancel can lead to a swift death.

The GPS is great for stopping phantoms in their track, and the large mag size is forgiving when people like me with poor aim inevitably misses a shot or two.

The Piranha was fun to use on a destroyer and GI prior to the first nerf partly because it just did an insane ammount of dps and made a mockery out of platinum. Atlases, and banshees going down in seconds. Platinum felt like bronze with three or four piranha geth infiltrators.

The reason I still like the Piranha in its current form is that it has a decent dps at close to medium range, and has a really satifying look and feel. I sometimes feel like a 30s era Chicago gangster with it defending the galaxy against the reaper ATF agents.

So it is a combination of functionality, looks, sound and the feel of using the weapon. Its relatively low encumberance make it a decent alternative on caster classes against armoured boss units which you can still hit without accuracy bonuses due to the large hitboxes.

One comment about the other shotguns. For the diciple to function as I imagine it was intented it needs reliable staggering.

Cheers.

i use most of them regularly, i use the reegar for my krogan vanguard and quarian infiltrator, the claymore for human solider and krogan soldier, the wraith for classes with a quick cooldown and the piranha i actually i don't use very often to be honest, it's good but i like variety and it isn't really any better than the others if they are used correctly in the right hands, the piranha just requires less skill than a claymore reload cancel human soldier

Disciple is only good as a sidearm, Crusader weights way too much, Wraith has too big a risk with only two shots per clip and Graal requires proper aiming while the other shotguns you can just spam.

I like the rate of fire. Some shotguns have a unique ability, Disciple = stagger, Claymore = extreme power, Graal & GPS = charge, Crusader = armor piercing slug and the Piranha is like an angry barking dog that quickly barks/shoots and I like that it clears out a crowd or weakens them quite a bit.

I use to do this with a Scimitar but if the Piranha is a tough angry dog the Scimitar is a annoying fast barking toy dog like a poodle or chihuahua and simply will not do anymore...needs more BITE like the Piranha...

It can allow one to sprint around killing stuff on any difficulty while eliminating them in less then a second, for the weight of the wraith.

Why wouldn't they use it?

I only use the Piranha with CQC centric characters that can take tons of punishment, but still somewhat rely on their powers. (like the N7 Paladin)

I don't use the GPS or Graal because Guardians are, and always will be a major pain in the ass for people using guns without AP capablities. The Cerberus buffs because "they're the easiest faction" weren't much help either.

The Wraith is leagues above the Scimitar, Eviscerator, Katana, and Disciple so I don't even bother with those guns anymore now that I have a Wraith X.

I still use the Claymore on my QI

Because the only automatic shotgun. IRL the auto shotguns very fun and efficient weapons. In MP, not so much, but not worse, and the only ones.

I use the Claymore, Reegar, and Grail as my go to shotguns in gold matches. I don't run with the Piranha often if at all.

I don't have the Wraith or Crusader at high enough levels to really help me kills bad guys, though I do like the Crusader in silver matches.

I was never a fan of the GPS and the Disciple just doesn't cut it, I'd rather use the Talon.

It's light, with high dps, low recoil, forgiving if you make mistakes... I've tried the gps and it's good, but kinda difficult to use off host.

I use the Piranha because it has high-DPS and low-weight.  And because in this game everything except Nemeses bum-rush you, so CQB is all I need on most maps.

Claymore: Love this gun
GPS: Don't care for the charge mechanic, but also a good gun
Graal: Not great off host, don't care for charge mechanic
Disciple: Pretty much worthless damage wise
Reegar: Awesome gun, but limited range
Piranha: Like the reegar but a better range
Wraith: Great gun, but need rate of fire boost. Claymore reload cancel makes it a better option in most cases.
Crusader: Probably the last shotgun I want to use. Too heavy too little damage to take over the Claymore
