There's been no mention of changing the style from the second DA. There have been mentions of being able to use assets from that game in the new engine.

That's all I know at this time.

I actually liked the stylized graphics in DA2. The stark contrasts of grey, white, and red were far more visually pleasing than the ugly, muddy, brown blurriness that was Origins.

I hope so too, but most likely not. BioWare seem quite enamoured with it. It's shame really, since Frostbite would have really given BioWare a chance to show what they can do visually.

A game engine and game art style aren't the same thing.

I hope not. It is possible improve graphics and "show what you can do" while keeping the art style.

I suspect the Big Swords and Big Eyed Elves will stay.

The rest is probably up for grabs. To an extent I got the impression that a lot of DA2's stylistic choices were attempting to make a virtue of necessity. If you can't put in much detail then go for something more minimalistic.

I like the art style of Mass Effect. They look very realistic. Dragon Age looks very cartoonish in a way. Not that it's bad, it just doesn't fit in with the dark theme the game was supposed to have.

If anything, the new engine should handle lighting and shadows differently so it might help against the whole shiny plastic look that DA2 characters tended to have in DA2's bright environments.

I felt the style was too 'cartoony' in DA 2, it was like it was going for more of an anime style, especially in regards to Elves. I much preferred the elf style in DA: Origins.

I would also like to see weapons a little more proportionate in size, though I suspect a part of the reason for given sizes in the past are generally designed for the combat animations and make the different sizes of weapons more visual.

The fact remains, however, that game engines and art styles are two very different things.

I didn't mind the art style in DA2, but since this is the Frostbite Engine I'm curious on how real the characters would look.

Hopefully they'll only change the art style if they intend to change it to something better. Returning to Origins' "50 Shades of Generic Brown Blandness" would not be an improvement in style.

Every time someone says "cartoony," a pseudocognitive dies.

I liked that JRPG feel from DAII, but as others have said, the engine has nothing to do with the art style.

And Origin's art is boring anyway. Who wants another generic LoTR-looking fantasy game? Certainly not I.

They've already stated they're not doing "another" 180º turn. So expect reiteration and refination, but not a drastic departure in the art.

Game Engine won't determine that - Art Style will.

There are some things I liked about the Dragon Age 2 redesign and a few things I didn't. I can live with it, if the art style doesn't change, but I would like to see certain things changed - Like the complete lack of facial structure on female characters.

At least no one can complain about graphic quality as many have confused that with art direction - and in some cases, aspects of level design.

I'm just glad the DA team has a better engine to work with in addition to engine support from the guys at DICE. There's usually quite a bit of a learning curve when teams are switching from one game engine to another.

This is something I agree with. I don't know why people insist that art styes and engines have anything to do with each other. The OP might want to look at Borderlands and/or Borderlands 2. If I'm not mistaken, Gearbox initially intended to go with realistic graphics, but they ultimately had some sort of epiphany and took the cel-shaded approach. I think it's something that's unique and works.

Do you, the OP, think the storytelling in The Walking Dead (the Telltale game) is somehow less impactful because it's not "realistic" and because they created it in the style of the Walking Dead graphic novels/comics? I don't think so - in fact, it's still probably one of the best games of played thus far this year (in terms of the emotional power it has). What should really matter is not the engine or the art style but the story.

To mean, this whole realism vs. "cartoon" thing is like comparing Hokusai and da Vinci. One did highly stylized work that was brilliant in its own way, while the other did highly realistic work that was brilliant in its own way. I swear, it's like people see what they perceive as being a "cartoon" and immediately dump on it because they can't appreciate any aesthetic other than pure realism (not that I'm saying DA2 was a shining example of an art style that wowed me - it didn't).

You make an excellent point on the varying degrees of "cartoony"..

And you get bonus points for Dexter.

And I lose points for my complete lack of English skills today.
